The Setup
The setup gives us two rules about where Frequent Viewers club members can pick up the coupon.
Rule 1: If a member has rented more than 10 videos in the past month, then she can get the coupon ONLY at the location of her last rental.
Rule 2: If a member has not rented more than 10 videos in the past month, then she can get the coupon ONLY at the Main Street location.
We then learn two facts about Pat: she hasn't rented more than 10 videos in the past month, and she can get the coupon at the Walnut Lane location.
Pat Can't Be A Member
Look at what we know about Pat: she hasn't rented more than 10 videos in the past month, and she can get the coupon at Walnut Lane. But look at Rule 2: any club member who hasn't rented more than 10 videos can get the coupon ONLY at Main Street.
Walnut Lane isn't Main Street. So the facts about Pat seem to contradict Rule 2! But wait...
Rule 2 governs club members. If Pat's a member, then there's a logical contradiction. So in order to avoid the logical contradiction, Pat can't be a member. This must be true, because if she were a member, the facts about Pat would contradict Rule 2.
By the way, the inference that Pat can't be a member might be confusing if you mistakenly think that you need to be a member in order to get the discount. But the stimulus doesn't establish that only members can get the discount. Given what we know about Pat, it must be possible for non-members to get the discount, and the stimulus doesn't rule out that possibility.
