PrepTest 11 - Section 2 - Question 21

Show analysis

A recent report on an environmental improvement program was criticized for focusing solely on pragmatic solutions to the large number of significant problems that plague the program instead of seriously trying to produce a coherent vision for the future of the program. ██ ████████ ███ ██████████ ███████ ███████ ████ ███ ███████ ███ ██████ █ █████ █████ ███ █████████ █████ ██ ██ ████████ ██ ████ ███ ███████ ██████ █████████ ██████████ ████████ ███ ████ ██ ███ ████ ███████ ███ ███████ █████ ██████ ██ ██████ █ ██████████ ███ ███████████

This Question Is Old And Weird

The stimulus gives us 1) an unsupported claim from the critics, and 2) an argument from the report authors with a clear gap in its reasoning:

Critics
Claim: Focusing on pragmatics over vision was a bad call.
Report Authors
Premise: The program requires government funding, and government funding requires a reputation for competence.
(Assumption: We must focus on pragmatics to regain a reputation for competence.)
________
Conclusion: Focusing on pragmatics over vision was a good call.

Because our job is to help the critics undermine the authors’ position, it would be entirely reasonable to anticipate something that weaponizes the assumption in the authors’ argument. Like:

There’s no relationship between focusing on pragmatics and having a reputation for competency.
or
Producing a coherent vision is the only way to gain a reputation for competency.

As it happens, the correct answer choice doesn’t engage with the authors’ reasoning at all – it just provides direct support for the critics’ claim. That doesn’t technically violate the stem, but it’s still weird, and really it’s a mark of how old this question is. These days we’d probably see either more direct engagement with the report authors’ reasoning, or else a stem worded more like “which of the following strengthens the critics’ position?”
