The statement about private coporation supported the conclusion by ruling out another option that someone would bring up to counteract the argument. If private corporations would undertake to support activities that do not yield short-term profits, then society would rather choose corporate funs instead public funds.

Basically, D supported the conclusion as it explained that another option to reap the benefits of pure science is not accessible.
