I got this wrong because i mixed up the flow. For some reason i didn't process that an external force can give a society self determination. The struggle to become free, the important part, is what allows a society to remain free. Self determination comes after the struggle.

Struggle for freedom > Self determination > Remain free

If self determination is imposed, they cannot remain free.
