Ethan started working with 7Sage after completing his MFA at the University of Iowa, the country's top program in program in creative writing. Every year, he reads hundreds of over-performing applications in order to decode how schools actually make admissions decisions. When not at work, you can find him digging for quahogs in Rhode Island's tidal waters. He's currently finishing his first book.

There are reverse splitters and reverse splitters! If you can't get to the median, get to the 25th percentile for your goal schools. If you're at the GPA median and above the LSAT, you're an admissible candidate who can make use of strong softs.

How patience can get you into the T14

When I first met Leah in 2024, she had already been studying for the LSAT for a year. Over the next two years, she worked tirelessly: both on bringing her LSAT up to her goal score (173) and on one of the best applications I've ever seen.

Next year, she'll be attending Michigan Law with significant merit aid. We sat down to discuss her whole journey: from her initial diagnostic through the TESTING DISASTERS that almost literally sank her candidacy on test day -- and the smart choices she made in a particularly hectic admissions season.

No. matter who you are, if you're aiming for a top school, there's something you can learn from Leah's experience.

We'll be covering more "Getting In" stories all summer. Let me know if you have any feedback or questions you'd like us to address. And if you'd prefer to listen to the podcast version of this discussion, find the 7Sage LSAT podcast on Spotify/Apple Podcasts/An RSS feed near you.

The baseline number is what matters for the school's median (and, therefore, their ranking) so it is paramount. But grade inflation is out of control and a 3.9 isn't really a reliable signal of how good of a student you are anymore. So particularly at top schools, AOs do try to read the tealeaves of your transcripts to figure out how rigorously you proved yourself in college. They also see a comparison of how you did compared to the rest of your school, so they do have some insight into your institution's grading policies.

The real question is, What do you do with this information? Because your degree was STEM and the legal profession is mostly entangled with language, you need to use your application to demonstrate that you're also linguistically strong.

There's also the professional question -- have you proven yourself in a professional context? Will that be clear to AOs?

129 to UPenn Law with 7Sage

When Vivienne scored a 129 on her diagnostic, it would have been easy for her to give up on her T14 dreams. One massive thing made a difference: she'd heard stories of others who made similarly massive improvements.

We had the fortune of chatting with Vivienne about her colossal journey: how she bagged an over 30-point jump on the LSAT and how she charmed UPenn as an under-median candidate. Check out our discussion here.

And if a top law school is your goal, it's never too early to consider what 7Sage Admissions can do for you.

@BrielaSantos No! The signal is re-taking the LSAT again after you've already beat the median. But a higher LSAT is generally good, of course. Just make sure you write your application in a way that convinces your goal school that they're your top choice
