Texas Tech or U of Denver($, 2.3 conditional)?

Hi all,

I applied to several other schools, but I narrowed it down to these 4 schools:

Texas Tech (no scholarship offer yet) *COA is about $26k/year

U of Denver (a little less than $$, 2.3 conditional)

SMU (WL)

A&M (WL)

I am a Texas native, but I would be ok with moving to Colorado or staying in Texas for law school and work. I would not want to be in Texas forever though, I'd love to experience and work at another state at some point. I feel like staying in Texas for law school would be the safer route since I am more familiar with the state and have family here. I'll also have close to $50k in savings before I begin.

One thing that puts me off about U of Denver compared to Tech is after calculating my debt from the accesslex website, I think i'd have around $50-70k more debt at Denver and the average salaries for first year grads from Tech and Denver are about the same, according to their stats. Thoughts between Denver vs Tech? Any help would be appreciated! :D

I will be 29 when I start. Graduated a Master's program at 23, traveled, saved, taught reading & writing to wonderful elementary and middle school students for 5 years, but now I'm ready to pursue my passion.

I'm sincerely excited to just learn. I took my undergrad and grad school for granted. I was more concerned to just get a damn job and that's it. Can't wait to start in the Fall!

Debt is a very serious thing. Are you okay with that money hanging over your head for the next 30 years, accruing massive amounts of interest daily? Are you okay with the stress the debt will put on your family? If you answered yes, then I personally would go for DU. But I would do some soul searching first.

Yes, the debt definitely worries me and will possibly dissuade me from DU. I hope that as I gain experience and my pay goes up, I won't have to deal with debt for 30 years though lol...

I think you need to wait until all your offers are in before you jump to conclusions. But given the choice you presented here, I think I’d go with Denver. Usually I think following the money is the best choice, but Denver is a significantly higher ranked school with better employment prospects in an area you seem more excited about. On top of that, $90k for law school is still a pretty darn good price. I wasn’t totally sure by your post, but I think that cost you gave us is not considering your savings, right? So that factored in too, you could still come out of it with even less debt. I think that would set you up very well no matter what your post-school salary is.

Thank you for your input, @leahbeuk911 . I do agree I need to wait, I just have a gut feeling it'll come down to these schools considering my chances are so low at UH and the others.

And yes you are correct, I wasn't including my savings. The $90k figure does worry me since I've been fortunate enough not to have student debt in the past, this will be new to me. I appreciate your honest feedback, Leah. Best of luck to you!

I wouldn't count Texas A&M out. If you're getting money from Denver, then you may be in line for some A&M money as well. I'm in Colorado and decided not to apply to Denver, because they have conditional scholarships requiring you to keep a 3.0 to keep your scholarship. If you lose it, the tuition rate is pretty pricey. A&M's threshold is just good academic standing, which puts you at about a 2.0 or 2.3, and their tuition is cheaper too. Also, Denver's 1L academic attrition rate was over three times that of A&M last year.

I wouldn't go to an unranked school personally, especially if you're not passionate about living in the area long-term.

Thank you for your advice. I am hopeful to be admitted to A&M, that'll definitely shake things up for me. I didn't think I was going to be admitted to Denver, so once I was accepted I was pretty stoked just to think about possibly living in Denver.

My scholarship stipulation was a 2.3, so I guess it's not so bad? The attrition rate is concerning though, wonder why that is? Thank you again!

Hi everyone,

I know it's still early in the cycle and I have some schools decision still pending, but I sorta have that gut feeling I will attend one of these schools that have already accepted me.

I am still waiting on Texas A&M, SMU, UH and OU and got waitlisted at Texas Tech, but the two choices I'm really debating right now is U of Denver with a decent scholarship that puts COA at a little over 30k/year and Oklahoma City Law, which I understand is unranked but has given me the best scholarship offer and will put COA at only $15k/year.

I am drawn to U of Denver's better ranking and am fascinated at the idea of moving and working in Colorado, but the debt scares me. Fortunately, I have never had student debt. I am not too excited about possibly attending OCU Law considering that it is not a great school anywhere outside Oklahoma or OKC, but financially I think that will be my best offer and I wouldn't mind working in OKC for a couple years. I wish I knew where I wanted to work after 3 years, so I guess i'm also drawn to Denver because of the relative flexibility and mobility of a Denver Law degree?

Everyone on here has been completely honest and supportive with me, so I have no issue being transparent about my financial situation in order to help me with a decision. After my last year of work this year, I will have close to $55k in savings which I plan to use for law school, but obviously try and keep as much as I can. My parents have said they will help me with some of my expenses, but I am not willing to ask for help with tuition money.

Between Denver Law and OCU Law, what do you guys think would be better given my situation? I have close to or less than a 50% chance at the other schools I mentioned, which is why I'm not too hopeful that I will be accepted at this point. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!

We're still working to update our predictor and https://classic.7sage.com/admissions/top-law-school-admissions/ with the new medians. Stay tuned!

Thank you for doing this! Any idea when the predictor will be updated?

You're below their median LSAT and you're just above the median GPA. I don't know how much being a URM will help you at that school (my intuition is not much).

Not much info about the school on LSN and I doubt you'll find anyone on 7sage that is attending that school.

I thought being a URM gives you a decent boost at most schools, no? Why do you think it won't? Just curious. Thank you for your feedback though I really appreciate it!

Generally the higher the ranking of the school the bigger the boost for being a URM. And the lower the ranking of the school the less of a boost.

That's true, I forgot about this.. :o

This may or may not help, but IMHO, if you want to go, take your shot and apply. The thing about models you have to remember, they are accurate over large numbers of people. For example, given your noted percentage of 79%, the model would suggest that out of 100 people, 79 of them would be admitted. The issue for us is that as a sample size of 1, we don't know if we are one of the 79 admitted or one of the 21 not admitted. Bottom line, these models can predict for large groups of similarly matched applicants, not us as individuals. They cannot accurately assess how we as single data points will fare in the admissions process. (Yes, I have a masters in statistical analysis, I'm a closet geek.)

Bottom line: Regardless of what any predictor tells you, if you are interested in the school, submit an application. That will be the best way of showing you in real time if you can get in.

Good luck!

Thank you again, @kingse414 ! Thanks for the analytical feedback. If you were in my place applying to the same school looking at those chances of admission percentages, would you feel good with your chances?

Check out Law School Numbers to see similar applicants and what their softs were, etc. I think it sounds like a reach school but not a crazy reach.

Thank you. I saw some applicants with numbers similar to mine and there were several that were admitted and they were non-URM's.

Is it a reach though? I feel like its more of a target school, but I guess its a reach since I'm under the median. Man i'm nervous. Thank you again.

Hey everyone,

So I used the law school predictor tool using my stats as a URM: 3.39 and 152 LSAT and it says I have a 79% chance?

I don't mean to undermine the methods here, but it almost sounds too good to be true. Anybody have experience applying here or know anybody with similar stats as mine and how they may have fared?

If it helps to know I also have a Masters and have been a bilingual middle school teacher for 5 years.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you so much!

Carlos - best of luck to you! Seems like you made some great improvement over time! I hope you get the score you want!! You can always extend your subscription if you want to try it again in Jan or March. Perhaps hire a tutor for those extra points? I'm at the point of just ditching this whole damn thing but for whatever reason I keep getting sucked in.

Thank you very much, @cgracia12433 ! I appreciate the support, but I think i'm done. I know if I was to study full-time I could definitely increase, but I think i've taken the test too many times and I also think i've been studying way too long for this, i'm done. I already gave away and recycled most of my materials lol.

I wish you all the best, @cgracia12433. Thank you again for your advice and support!

Carlos, thank you for taking the time to share your journey with us.

I wish you the best of luck! And do update us on Dec. 8th!

Thank you again, J.Y! You truly are doing a great job with this page. In the 2 years i've been able to see a lot of the changes and innovations to the page, as well as seeing the community really grow.

You're an excellent teacher, and very passionate at what you do. I hope I can be just as passionate in my job as you are. Wishing you and the 7Sage community all the best!

1

With a week left in my subscription, I wanted to say thank you to this awesome and supportive community, as well as a huge thank you to JY for creating and continually innovating this 7Sage program.

I know my stats aren't amazing, but after 2 years studying on and off for this exam and working full-time, I was able to go from a 139 diagnostic,144, 147, 152 and hopefully 154+ (Nov) on the real LSAT's, so I'll take that dub.

7Sage definitely has my recommendation, and the people on here are amazing. For what it's worth, i'll finish this post by saying what i'd change if I can do it all over again.

Dedicate studying for this exam full-time for 5 months

Burnout is real, but I also felt great momentum was the biggest factor in my score increasing. I have been studying inconsistently, but the time I took a 4 month hiatus from Jan through April then began to study for the Sept 18 LSAT has so far been my highest score. Point is 2 years studying for this exam was too damn long.

Sit for the September LSAT

That was my highest score, and as a teacher who gets the summer off, I thought getting those two months completely off was a huge difference and its also pretty early in the cycle. I would think this is also the case for students. Sure, things start ramping up in August and September, but its not so bad, right? (syllabus stuff? lol)

NOT BECOME SO FREAKIN OBSESSED, WORRY ABOUT STUDYING ONLY!

The current market for attorneys, medians, obsessing about stats, on and on. Sure, its reality and it is important. I'm not denying that. But it won't matter until you get the sore you want, and you have to bump all that noise until you're done busting your ass for this test.

I wish all the best for everyone on here. Your hard work will pay off. Happy Thanksgiving!

Cheers,

Carlos

Like others have said, I thought this was a balanced LSAT, nothing too crazy. I did however think RC was tough. Seems like most people thought it was easy or hard, no in between.

I thought my first LR with the bonobo question wasn't so bad.

The three LG's except mining were not very bad. I think I got max -5 on LG, which is avg for me.

I had 2 other LR's and I thought those were pretty tough. Lets hope for the best!

I've just been drilling my weak areas and hitting LG's from 59+ .

Like others have mentioned, most of the hay is in the barn already lol. I'm still wanting to go hard this last week, taking one more PT on Sunday, light drills for next week with my last study day being Thursday.

Don't burn out with a week left, man. At this point its all about mental preparation and staying confident. Best of luck to you. #mambamentality

What you will do is probably what I will do as well.

Are you from SoCal region, or just Laker fan? Lol

I'm actually from Dallas, I'm a huge Mavs and hoops fan! Glad you caught the reference though :)

Hello again 7Sage fam,

I am very interested in immigration law/family law clinics, but not all schools I am interested in applying have these clinics. How important are clinics? Would it be better to attend a higher ranked school w/o these clinics of interest, or attend a lower ranked school with clinics where you can get valuable experience in?

I'm personally really drawn to these lower ranked schools because I think it would be awesome to get that experience, but I understand that other schools have ranking to their advantage.

It would be great to hear some perspective from some current or past students who have had experience with these clinics.

Thank you!

I'm very interested in sports law, and I keep telling myself I'm gonna be an agent! Idc if I sign a big time player or semi-pro player, once they sign pen to paper my dream has been accomplished! haha anyway I always see sports & entertainment law go hand in hand, however I don't think my numbers will get me into a good program. I'm from Texas, so i'll likely attend somewhere in Houston or Dallas, hotbeds for basketball and football.

Thanks for the insight though, and best of luck! I'll PM you soon!

I don’t know the exact numbers and I’m totally speculating and this is just from scrutinizing LSN so much, I think the “URM boost” gives you a 2-5 point LSAT boost. Your GPA is also below the median. You aren’t a shoe in with your current stats. I would retake just to get those 2 extra points. Definitely start working on your app now and submit it whenever it’s ready even if it’s before score release. You can just indicate you’re taking November 2018 and they will wait to review with an updated score.

That's whats holding me back, I'm not a definite shoe in, but the percentage is tempting me! Thank you very much for your feedback :)
