Same issue!!

#help a non-native speaker! I am wondering if we are supposed to know what "mastodon" is in English to do the test? I had very hard time to understand the passage until I knew mastodon is a type of prehistoric animal. (Somehow I thought it would be a type of homo sapiens...) Should I be able to do the question even without knowing what mastodon is? Thanks!!!
