The difference between A and E is not just in the word "often" it is that the author never said E. E is saying that critics often do this - that they make fuzzy distinctions to support different kinds of claims. Whereas, A is specifically talking about one claim that critics of consumerism claim and that that particular claim rests on a fuzzy distinction.
