I'm no expert, but this sounds like a dope essay! Something I've been struggling with during applications as a ~young woman~ is worrying about whether I am coming across as soft, overly feminine, not serious enough. And then I get mad at myself for feeling that way, because it's stupid and has no bearing on whether or not I can practice law.

You're obviously a boss. If you wanna write an amazing essay about kittens, I salute you. After all, I ended up mentioning chocolate milk and happy tears in mine. You got this!

I've always viewed the personal section as a way to put in something sort of fun that wouldn't come across anywhere else on your application. I mention that I bake bread and am a certified Wilderness First Responder.

@, where you have something serious and valuable to say, I personally would put something as important as providing for your family in a diversity statement or personal statement. It'll be more likely to get the weight it deserves

I did a top ten list too (I was accepted ED, so I like to think it helped!), and I listed the best meals I've ever had with a little blurb about where I was/what I was doing during them. It's not that I think your ideas are too goofy, but if memory serves, the word limit is 250, and I think it might be tough to really show anything about yourself through characters/books in that space. Just a thought!

+1 to all of @ 's post! After I wrote a draft that made me happy, I sort of reverse-outlined the piece to make sure it flowed, and really cut it down to like two main points I wanted to convey. If you have anything that doesn't further your narrative purpose or contribute to the ultimate goal, it can go.

(I know that's easier said than done, especially when you're staring at a beautiful sentence you're pretty sure is Pulitzer-worthy, but I think it actually feels pretty liberating to slash and burn!)

I added mostly things that seemed "impressive" and then peppered in a couple of things that made me seem fun and cool, like DJing for our radio station during college or running the Outing Club. Ended up sticking to one page for sure. It can definitely be hard to pare down everything you think is important, especially when you worked so hard! My criteria was as follows: What did I spend the most time on that also secretly belies something about me I'd want the admissions board to know?

Hope that helps!

I work in real estate law right now, which isn't the #dream, but is pretty interesting nonetheless. If I stripped away all barriers/strands of self-doubt, I'd say my ultimate goal is to work in the Civil Rights Division of the Dept. of Justice. Or, ya know...the Supreme Court ;)

Something that tends to work for me is asking myself why I really want to study law. If I think about all the lofty, idealistic reasons--helping people, protecting voting rights--then spending hours each day studying for a test seems like the least I can do to reach that goal. Small price to pay for giving back. I guess in my mind it's like this: http://parallelevision.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/do-it-for-her.jpg

RC Practice materials suggestions

Hi all,

I just began the RC section of the curriculum, and I'm finding it sort of pointless to study along with the videos without having the passage in front of me. I've heard legends of a time when pdfs were available, but now that that's not a thing, I was hoping some of you had suggestions on how best to get my hands on study materials. How do you ensure you're not "wasting" material from PTs while just trying to learn/perfect the study methods?

(I'm sure this has been asked before....sorry for the repetition)

THANKS!

School Culture

Hi friends,

Congrats to everyone who took the LSAT on Saturday. Potential RC crises notwithstanding, making it through an administration is an accomplishment in and of itself, I think!

I'm shifting my focus towards applications to try and take my mind off the waiting time for scores to be released, and as I'm getting more specific with school lists, I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for getting a feel for the "culture" of the schools. Part of my motivation comes from wanting write a kickass "Why X?" essay, but the majority of my curiosity stems from a hesitance to shell out tons of cash if a school isn't going to be a fit for me. I've obviously read all of the website and application materials, but I haven't done the whole "apply to college" type routine for some years now, and my uncovering skills may be a lil rusty. I remember for undergrad, sites like collegeconfidential felt pretty helpful at the time, but I don't know what my resources are in that vein for law school.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks y'all!

Hi! Sorry to hear about your frustrations, but it's awesome that you're consistently improving in LG/LR!

I've been having a tough time with RC recently as well. Something that has been pretty helpful so far is learning to identify the different types of questions, much like we would do with LR. If you're succeeding in LR, it could be useful to approach the RC questions in a similar manner. After all, we're often tasked with finding the main point/conclusion, looking for assumptions, and identifying inferences. If this is a strength for you elsewhere, maybe becoming more confident with the types of questions and thinking of them as individuals instead of one piece in an intimidating set will help your brain not freak out.

Similarly, keep an eye out for those indicator words, like "all", "some", and "most" that we've dealt with elsewhere in the curriculum. When I see those in an RC passage, I always make a note and keep in mind what they're supposed to be indicating.

Not sure if this will be helpful at all, but I hope it is. Good luck!

The 7Sage Mindset

Hey friends,

This is just a lil encouragement post for those of us who may have been underwhelmed by our LSAT performance, and anyone reading the boards who is thinking about joining 7Sage.

When I started studying for the LSAT over the winter, I was dead-set on taking the June exam, ace-ing it, and being admitted early to Harvard (a girl can dream). I've always been kind of type A, and sometimes I get discouraged when I'm not immediately the best at something. However, I quickly realized I wasn't ready to sit in June, and began studying nearly full-time with 7Sage in March. I have this to say: the community here, from the instructors to the other students, has completely changed my mindset. I'm learning to trust the process, and to take absolute ownership for my own study habits.

In high school and college, I loved trying to blame a professor or the test if I didn't do well. When I walked out of the LSAT in September, regardless of how shaken up I was, I just kept thinking that the test was incredibly fair. When I got my score last week and it wasn't quite what I wanted, I was disappointed and truly shaken up for a couple of hours, but then immediately mapped out all my options. And I realized: the absolute worst case scenario is that I don't start law school next fall. And if that's my biggest problem, I'm going to be just fine.

I guess I'm probably not explaining this too well, but I wanted to say that the 7Sage community and program has totally changed my outlook, for the better. I am more patient, I am more logical, and I am more willing to work as hard as I can for an end goal I believe in. BIG thanks to everyone who has been encouraging, supportive, and knowledgable. I hope everyone else in the same boat is able to find some peace with their own outcomes as well----it's gonna be ok!

RC Troubles

Hi friends,

Wondering if anyone else is having a similar problem: I was scoring -0 or -1 in RC on the older tests, but in the 60s and 70s, I'm trending towards -4 or -5. I'm sort of depending on ace-ing RC to keep my score within my target range. Does anyone have any tips for what to look for in the newer RC sections, or else how to practice not falling for the subtle differences? I'm currently planning on writing in September.

Thanks a million!

I ended up doing a header with my full name to the left, my LSAC # in the center, and then a brief title, like "Top Ten" or whatever your prompt is, on the right.

@ My goal as well, friend. It feels extra prescient right now.

I've always been interested in the law because details are very important to me, and I love research. I grew up with this indelible sense of fairness, and I'm especially interested in helping people secure their right to vote!

I can't wait to see how successful everyone becomes! 7sage has really helped me to understand that success is in the eye of the beholder. Good luck to everyone writing on Saturday!

Hey, I'm in the same boat with living at home and studying and even feeling immense pressure to apply this cycle. Even got a 163, except for some reason I bombed LG (haven't had the heart to do a full review yet). I'm planning on studying, retaking in December, and crushing. My average was 166-167, and I would be thrilled with a 167 at this point if I'm being honest. But seriously, I have a feeling the whole community here is looking out for you, and you're GOING to nail the next one.

0L Prep

Hey gang,

I hope everyone is doing well! I have what I hope is a quick question...what's the deal with those law preview courses? I've been getting tons of brochures and emails, but I'm skeptical that they're worth the time/money. I don't want to show up being the only kid who hasn't done her proverbial homework, but I also don't want to get scammed.

What do people think? Are there certain books I should read before school starts?

I was so focused on getting in that I spent very little time sitting with the reality of attending, if that makes sense.

Any and all advice appreciated!

You guys are all so sweet! @ That's a great idea! Unfortunately the department head has also since departed, and I was never a student of his. I'll keep plugging along. At the end of the day, guess it's better to focus on the things I can control. On that note, off to PT! Thanks everyone again!

@ Good advice! Unfortunately I went to a tiny college and we didn't have TAs in the humanities. @ I actually found him on linkedin and tried messaging him there too, to no avail, which is why I tried contacting his colleague for permission, and they assured me he would be happy to hear from me. This has actually been going on for over a year...yikes!

SOS my thesis advisor ghosted

Hi friends,

This is sort of a weird question, but I'm sure some of you have had similar experiences, and any advice would really help me out!

I guess I'm a nontraditional applicant in that I graduated in 2015. Since then I've been working, traveling, and making sure I actually wanted to apply to law school (I do, hooray). I was pretty successful in college, but I sort of distanced myself from my school after graduation because I was turned off by several political and social decisions being made by the administration. This is to say that I didn't do a great job of keeping in touch with my professors.

The problem is, I spent a year and a half working with one professor on my Honors History Thesis, for which I ended up winning the highest departmental awards. I viewed it as an accomplishment for both of us! He has since left my undergrad, and the school has no idea where he went. I ended up emailing one of his colleagues who asked him if it would be okay if I got in touch with him, and he said yes. I've emailed him four or five times over the last three months, to no avail. Aside from worrying about him, I'm selfishly frustrated because he was the person who knew me and my work best, and I'm afraid it will reflect poorly on me if 'honors thesis' is plastered all over my resume and then no recommendation from my advisor appears.

I have a great employer rec coming in, as well as one from a dean with whom I worked closely, and I've asked another professor who I feel pretty good about but perhaps not great. I'm aiming for a T14, and I think my GPA and softs stack up (I'm sitting in September). I would hate to miss my shot because I can't find this one guy!

Has anyone else lost their best recommender? Is this something that would be worth trying to explain, or would that be seen as making excuses/make me sound insane?

Thanks team, and seriously, good luck to everyone out there, especially those of you who've taken weird convoluted paths!!

Best way to use to Core Curriculum?

Hi all,

I'm really new to this, just started the Ult+ class on Monday. I'm a little bit confused about the best way to use the curriculum. Should I be completing all of the problem sets during each lesson, or saving some material for later? I am also especially asking about the Intro to Logic section; did people do all the quizzes right away, or save some to circle back to for practicing and studying down the line?

Sorry, I know some variations of this have been asked elsewhere, but I couldn't seem to find an active thread to ask in. I just don't want to miss out on any good techniques!

Thanks!

This makes total sense! And that's helpful. It's not that I can't make the inferences from each "new" rule, I just get all jumbled up when figuring out how/where to jump in. I'll give this a try, thanks!

Order fully determined Questions

Hi friends,

I keep having trouble with questions such as #5 section 4 on PT 72 that say something along the lines of "The order of _____ is fully determined if which one of the following is true?"

Any tips on how to solve these? I think I'm really in my own head when it comes to these questions.

Thanks!

Resume GPA Question

Hi friends!

I'm revamping my resume this morning to send to someone who's agreed to write me a recommendation. Did y'all use the GPA you graduated with, or the one that LSAC calculated for you? My LSAC GPA pushed me into a different percentile, so obviously this matters for admissions, but it feels a little dishonest to put the higher number on my resume. Thoughts? Thanks!

This has definitely been "asked and answered," as it were, but I just wanted to say I think it's awesome that you seem so excited about this topic, and I'm certain that will come across in Option A. I think it's always the best policy to go for honesty, especially when it's something you're clearly into. I definitely veered towards quirkier stuff in my essays, and I think it'll make you extra memorable. I'm dying to know what the book is :) Good luck!
