I had trouble with this question because it took me a while to connect the dots that the terms "lumpers" and "splitters" had a numerical implication.. Looking back it obviously does make sense that if you 'split' species it'll go from 1 -> 2 species so it'll increase the number of total species but for some reason it didn't click in my head. I read the names lumpers and splitters and kind of just thought of them as names, just like for example a person's name might be "Martin" or "James". I guess it hasn't been much of an issue up til now because the authors would always make sure to put in an extra sentence here and there to really drive home the point that "hey if it splits it means it goes from one species to two, don't miss that". I've never had it actually matter much to the point where it cost me a point. yikes. did anyone else go through this??
@Louiii77 thinking about it like this helped for me: for example water is a necessary thing for human life, but so is air. the journalist is basically saying "since water exists, so must human life." but it doesn't take into account that other things may also be necessary for humans to exist, such as air and food. yes water IS necessary, but its not the ONLY thing that absolutely necessary for it to exist.
