Looking for Advice on Retaking a 170

Let me preface with the fact that I'm SO grateful for my 170 and worked really hard for it! However, given my LSAC GPA (3.73) it looks like I'm still under both medians at most of my top choices/dream schools. I'm already signed up for the November test since I planned to use it as a back-up if things went bad in October. But now I find myself in this awkward place with JUST below median numbers. I guessed on a few questions on the last game of my October test (twas a tough one), which makes me feel like I might've left some points on the table. I'd realistically only be looking to marginally improve to a 171 or 172 (not really shooting for 175+). That being said, who knows, my score could go down.

For context, I'd really like to end up at NYU, Northwestern, Michigan, or Georgetown. I have 3 years of work experience at a law firm, am a first-gen student, my UGPA was a 3.86 because it didn't include study abroad courses (LSAC did), and I think I've got a pretty good personal statement and diversity statement (but so does everybody).

Long story short: to retake or not to retake? Any advice would be helpful, as none of my friends or family understand my dilemma.

158 (Nov. 2020) --> 170 (Oct. 2021)

Thank you 7Sage!! It took me 2 years of studying, lots of social events sacrificed, and some financial risks to get here. Still signed up for the November test, but we'll see. Happy to be done for now!

Advice for those who DID NOT start the exam before LSAC crashed: login to your ProctorU account and use the support chat function to reschedule your exam for tomorrow or Tuesday. It worked for me and others! No promises this crash won't happen again tomorrow...but it's worth a shot (especially if you're like me and unable to take it on the 21st).

I just sent an email to tech support, hopefully I'll get a response but not betting on it.

The only thing we can do is to sit back and wait for an update I guess. Hopefully they release something soon because we can only sit around waiting for so long...

I had just hooked up to ProctorU and was waiting for them to set things up when I got a message that LSAC is having technical difficulties and to contact them for further exam scheduling...but all their phone lines are busy and not even ringing...

Following...I have these exact same numbers and have the same problem. Not a URM but I'm leaning towards holding off and applying next cycle so I can focus on getting a better LSAT score.

Sat down to do my writing sample last night (because I'm a procrastinator/didn't have stable wifi access before now) and 12 minutes in it crashes. Called PSI tech support and was on hold for an hour before I gave up and went to bed. Called PSI again first thing the next morning and they canceled my old writing session. Then I had to call LSAC and wait 35 minutes on hold, they give me a new link for LSAT Writing but tell me the link won't work until 9PM and that if I want access sooner I need to call PSI and have them unlock it. So I call PSI, and am on the phone with them for an hour and a half only to find out they can't unlock it and that I should call LSAC and have them unlock it?! So back on the phone with LSAC, one hour later and the representative just tells me I should try again in a few days "to be safe" but that if I wanted to take it it won't be open until 12PM tomorrow now. Is this real life or a sick game? Either way, likely won't get a score until Christmas at this rate. Rant over - just really had to get that out.

RC-LG-LR. I thought RC was pretty average but definitely wasn’t as focused as I usually am so probably lost some points there. Nerves plus I was disconnected from ProctorU for at least a minute within 2 minutes of starting the test. LG felt easier, still ran out of time on game 4. I thought LR was TOUGH. I have score preview and will probably take again but thought it went okay overall.

@ I actually decided to push it back and plan to take it this November. I realized I simply didn't have the time to achieve my goal score and work full time. If November doesn't work out, I'm planning to take the summer off completely and dedicate myself to studying.

I do it all the time to drown out the noise from other people in my apartment. I usually just put on classical music, anything without words haha. I don’t think it hurts my BR either, my last was a 173 so I think it’s fine.

BR Going Up, Timed PTs Staying the Same!

Hi everyone,

So my timed PTs are stuck in the high 150s, but my BR has climbed to a 173. Is this just a timing thing? I'm thinking of just doing 2 PTs a week until the October exam. Is this even enough time to close the gap? Help!

Tips on Improving LR!

Currently getting about -7 wrong per LR section, and looking for any tips! During BR I write out full explanations for each question, and then go back and watch the explanation videos for those I missed during BR. My current BR score is anywhere from 166-170. I also read through The Loophole, but it didn't help me too much, although I do the basic translation drill still. Any advice?

@ For motivation during the CC, try going back to older problem sets at the beginning of CC and compare how you did then to how you're doing now. If you do worse, then you know what you need to work on. If you do better, then you're improving!

@ I feel ya! I never knew how much I needed my commute and office to break up study and work.

I was signed up for April but am pushing to July so I gave myself a small break. I've considered a tutor but not sure if that's financially an option!

Staying Motivated in Quarantine

Any tips on staying motivated right now? I recently took a few weeks off from studying right before I started working from home. Now that I'm trying to get back into a study routine, it's been really challenging to study after already sitting at my desk for 8 hours during the day. If you have any tips/suggestions, please send them my way!

I completed the CC less than a month ago and have taken two practice tests since. I’m already signed up for April because I pushed it from my orignal November test date after I decided to delay a cycle. It’s not a matter of not feeling like I’m not studying hard enough, it was more about the time constraint. But I think I’ve decided to delay to the end of summer and focus on foolproofing LG and going back to LR fundamentals. After that I’ll likely try another PT and evaluate where I stand. I feel like it makes sense to hold off on a tutor while I attempt to make some initial improvements into the 160s on my own. Thanks for the advice everyone!

I’m also struggling with this. Ultimately I don’t think I could fully quit for financial reasons, but I have considered part-time. It’s hard to fit 3 hours a day after work when you’re already mentally drained, plus the gym, and getting enough sleep. Lately I’ve only been going to the gym on weekends as I often don’t get home until 6:30. This is a huge change for me. I’ve been trying to do some studying on my commute (I take the train) but it’s difficult. I’ve considered quitting and taking up a part-time job at the cafe down the road. You’re not alone in this, keep pushing through! Everything is temporary.

Thanks, I appreciate the honest advice! I get a lot of comments from friends/family/co-workers about how I should just take it already and stop pushing it. I'm really trying to keep my takes to 2 maximum which is why I've already pushed it twice. I guess I just thought I'd be further along by now, but working full time has set me back more than I expected.

Enough Time to Improve for April Test

I've been studying for about a year now but joined 7Sage only about 6 months ago, which is also when I really started to take studying more seriously. I work full time so it took me a while to finish CC but I've now moved on to practice tests. Besides my diagnostic, I've only taken 3 PTs scoring an average of 152 timed, and a 162 BR. I'm aiming for a 165 on the April LSAT but starting to question whether that's enough time to improve my score for a 165. I've already pushed the test date twice because I did not feel ready and knew I would just be rushing to finish the CC. In doing this I decided to delay a cycle so I could focus on getting my best score possible (I'd ultimately like to score 170+).

My worst section is definitely LR (Yes, I have been BRing). For LG I sometimes panic under time pressure/scramble and so I don't get to every game but I plan on fool proofing games until I'm blue in the face. I'm wondering if I should just delay again (really giving LSAC all my money doing this) and give myself the time to get to 170+ on the first try, or if I should still aim for 165 on the April test and at least have one under my belt to get a feel for actually test day.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

@ I did something similar to a spreadsheet but instead I used a google doc to write down my reasoning for each question. Reading back my reasons for changing answer choices it felt like I didn't believe I got the question right the first time, so I deliberately persuaded myself to believe a different answer choice was right instead. If that make sense? I'm going to see how my next PT/Blind Review goes and then I might take you up on the offer! Thanks!

Changing Right Answers to Wrong During BR

I found on my first PT that a significant amount of answers I had gotten right during the initial timed test, I later went back and changed to the wrong answer during Blind Review. This wasn't just one or two questions, but many. Does anyone have any experience with this? Not sure how to feel about it, it's definitely not great. I'm not sure if I'm just second guessing myself too much, or if it's a deeper issue. Any advice?
