Never give up. Your goals are not irrational, as I had the same goals. I took the test three times, significantly under performed two of them, and now am attending HLS this fall. If I can do it you can too.

I would purchase it now. It's active for five years. Your report won't be submitted to the school until you specify you want it sent.

Yes it is better to start now. It will also allow you to begin assembling your letters of recommendation early.

I think it would! That is highly unique work experience, especially if you can demonstrate how that made you want to transition to law school. In this day and age, work experience is a huge plus and having something truly unique is even better.

Relax! Read a book. Travel. Exercise. Anything that you won’t be able to do come September

I've been waiting for a long time to write this. Perhaps too long. But as I sit here on this rainy day I couldn't think of a better time.

Before I start, I have to give a huge thank you to @danielznelson and @dml277. They have helped me so much on this journey and I'm so appreciative for everything they've done. But the person I attribute most of my success to is @twssmith. Without her motherly love, there's no way I would have gotten into the schools I have. She has been more than a study buddy. She is one of my best friends and I am eternally grateful for that. We even went to the masters together! Anyways, on with the story.

I started my LSAT journey around 2014. I took my first PT during that summer and got a 132. The 135 comes from me bubbling in B on the 40 or so questions I didn't have time to get to. When I looked at where I was and where I wanted to be, I was furious. I wanted this so bad and reading TLS articles where people scored higher than me without even trying enraged me even further.

I was using fox test prep at the time. The instructor said on average, people go up ten points. This was so discouraging. I wanted to get into Harvard. How am I supposed to do that with such low scores? So I followed his curriculum and kept burning fresh PTs. I didn't know what I was doing. Logic games seemed impossible. I didn't even know what a game board was never mind writing rules down. So I did what any rational person would do. I walked away and tried to find other resources.

I stopped studying for a few months. I bought the trainer but didn't read it for two years. Instead, I used fox prep books, foolishly, despite knowing that the course wouldn't work for me.

Where I was in undergrad, I focused on my grades for the rest of that semester and tried not to think about LSAT much. But I knew I wanted to go straight through so I had to get started soon. Towards the end of that academic year, I found 7Sage. At that point, I made up my mind that if this didn't work, I would quit studying and find a new career path.

So I made it work. I studied all the time. I studied at my summer internship. I sacrificed everything: my college friends, my family, even my girlfriend. All to beat this test. I was even studying during my classes to get ready for the September 2014 LSAT. Which got postponed to December. Then June 2015. Which meant I had to find a job because I no longer could go straight through. But I kept telling myself, "how bad do you want it?"

I finished the curriculum in May 2015 was PTing around 155 during that time. But for some reason I thought that I could go in there and hit a new personal best of 160. I was so wrong. I left the test center, crying, regretful. I blew it and I knew it. I wasted my time and my score ultimately reflected that. 153. I wasn't surprised but I was disappointed. Following the familial pressure, I applied anyways. I blanketed the T14. Shockingly, I was waitlisted at Chicago and Columbia. Hell, I even interviewed with Chicago. And even more surprisingly, I got into Georgetown. I had such mixed feelings. I went to the open house and all that it did was motivate me even more. "If this is the results I got with a 153, imagine what I could do with a 163 or 170," I told myself.

Where there were some things going on at my job that I won't mention, I decided to leave and study full time for the September 2016 LSAT. After restarting my studies in January of 2016 I was now well into the 160s. I was happy with my scores but not satisfied. I was working with Nicole Hopkins and felt myself improving each day. But when I walked in that testing so center on September 24th, 2016, it all hit the proverbial fan.

It was a disaster. It was the first time in my life that I was suffering from severe anxiety. I felt paralyzed. I put so much pressure on this moment that I could not move. I was petrified of making a mistake. I mean I'm not trying to make excuses but I feel that my situational anxiety got the best of me. Even worse, I was going home unemployed, leaving my job for what felt like nothing. I took a risk and failed, only scoring 1 point higher than my 153.

I applied anyways and was waitlisted at every single school from #4-9. Again, I was just more motivated than before. If these are the results I'm achieving with a 154, what could I do with a 164? How bad did I want it?

I didn't do any LSAT until I found a new job. But where my commute was now 2 hours each way and I was too tired when I got home, I woke up at 5am four days a week to study. Every single day I woke up, I would ask myself "how bad do you want this? How bad do you want to go to Harvard?" So I did what was necessary and plugged along.

It was around this time, in February 2017 that I found my lord and saviors: @twssmith and @dml277. For some context, I can be really rude sometimes. In fact, I hated Tyler. More than I hated study groups. I was a lone wolf. But she pushed me. She forced me to dig deeper. Literally our study calls would not progress until I provided her with an answer sufficient enough to make her happy. Which is exactly what I needed. @dml277 did the same thing...but was less Socratic about it. Kinda like good cop, bad cop. This was all so weird to me. I hated studying in groups but this was working so well.

Still, there was another postponing dilemma. I postponed June. Then September, ultimately taking December 2017 reluctantly, knowing that this is late in the cycle.

But it finally went well. Finally. After 3 long years I felt like I had taken an official test that I did well on. Given my standards, it was still not good enough. I crawled under my bed and laid there for an hour. But that day, I mustered up the courage and pressed submit on all of my apps.

While I'm by no means an LSAT aficionado like many of you here, there's one thing I'm really good at: crafting an application. My application tells a coherent story that makes sense and captures the readers attention. Just like an LSAT question, each and every part of my application lends support and is supported by something else. In a cycle like this, that is the most important thing. To some ends, it is a numbers game. But that's only 67% of the application. What about the other third? Why should the admissions committee pick you? It's truly because my essays (thank you @"David.Busis") and résumé telling a compelling story. It's because of the hard work I put into not only studying but the application.

My results are as follows:

Yale: Denied

Stanford: DLS (Waitlist or Denied (probably denied))

Harvard: Waitlist

Chicago: In with $$

Columbia: In with $$$

NYU: In, awaiting aid

Penn: Waitlist then denied (lol whatever)

UVA: In with $$

Duke: In with $$$$

Michigan: Didn't apply because I can't stand @danielznelson

Yes. I didn't get into Harvard (yet). I failed at my ultimate goal. But Chicago is more than good enough. And I'm not saying that out of pure rationalization. I'm saying that because I went there and I loved it. Small class size, great faculty, amazing clerkship numbers. I truly feel that there is nothing I couldn't achieve from Chicago in this profession.

This process has been a long and difficult one. Honestly it's been the hardest thing I've ever done. By far. But without this community I couldn't have done it. I'm so appreciative I can't put it into words. Thank you all so much. I hope I can help the same way that I have been helped time and time again.

Edit: I had no intentions of making this controversial but the internet being the internet, the trolls came out to play. I am a URM. I also had 16X, 3.7X, one year in a V50 firm, one year in a top state public office, and other great softs with only 3 months off to study. I wrote this to express gratitude and motivate those in similar positions, not to promote any controversial or particular agenda.

Closing the BR Gap

I know I am not the only one who is having this problem, but it's kind of bugging me given its persistence. So there is roughly a 10-15 point gap between my actual test score and my BR score. I was just wondering what some of you have done in order to try and close the gap as much as possible because...this kind of sucks. Thanks!

What do you do when you get a super hard game?

So the other day I got a crazy difficult game (curse you subzones) and I kinda panicked and sat there for the next 9 minutes. I wasn't sure what to do the whole time or even how to make a game board, which totally killed my score on what would have been a decent test.

I was just wondering what you all do you when get a crazy difficult game (other than panic). I know J.Y. talks about taking a step back and look at the questions but in this case it didn't work for me. Please share any strategies that you have when this happens to you. Thanks!!

From what I’ve seen this summer I really like the Socratic method. Professors don’t do it to be rude but they push students to dig deeper and understand legal issues. Plus when someone is being called on everyone else pays attention bc they don’t wanna be randomly called and not know what they are talking about.

I also only did them as necessary. If there was something I was unsure of I would do them until I felt comfortable. But if I knew what I was doing I would move on.

Scoring the Same but Doing Worse on LG?

Hello!

My last few preptests have been roughly the same in terms of score (164 average) but my LG score has been decreasing rapidly. For example, the last few preptest have been -1, -2, -3, -5, and -7, respectively, on LG. I was just wondering if anyone else has gone through this and if you could recommend a plan of action to fix this before the June test. I was thinking about going back and redoing all of the lessons, and focusing more on fool proof review, but I am not sure what else to do.

Thanks!

LSAC Field/Digital Test Question

Hello!

So I forgot to reply to the email to confirm my registration within 48 hours for the digital test next weekend (dumb, I know). I called them yesterday and they mentioned that my name was on the roster. But when I called back today (because the person I talked to yesterday was kinda rude), they said that there is no way for them to check whether I am signed up or not...

I emailed them to confirm and they did not specify whether I am signed up or not in their reply. I did elaborate and ask them directly to confirm my registration, but I am not sure what to do where admission tickets should be going out between today and Friday.

I am not sure where to go from here...

7Sage vs Trainer Schedule

Hi Everyone!

I just started studying for a retake next year (ughhh...) and had a quick question regarding the differences between the trainer and 7Sage. I know that in the trainer, they begin the first real chapter by talking flaws. Whereas, with 7Sage, the first test based content is main conclusion. Basically, for those that have used both simultaneously, do you use the Trainer to support the 7Sage curriculum or vice versa? To elaborate, do you follow along with the 7Sage syllabus and then when you skip to that chapter in the Trainer? Or vice versa? Idk...just trying to make sure that this go is much more effective than the last.

Thanks!

LSAT Trainer LG Question pg 180

So on page 180 (the irony) of the trainer, the last question of the second scenario brings up an interesting point. The scenario is sequencing with in out and the last question of the drill says "If N is performed before M, P will be performed before Q." Where only 5 elements are to be selected, does this mean that N-M guarantees that both P and Q are in? Or if one of P or Q are out, is the necessary still satisfied?

I know this is completely hypothetical and is supposed to be a drill. But I'm not sure if something similar will come up on an actual exam. Sorry if this is a silly question!

    The Podcast Thread

    Hi!

So I have a pretty long commute (about three hours a day) and like to listen to things at my desk, so I fell into podcasts over the last two years. I have seen a few mentioned on the forums, but I thought I’d share some of my favs with you all! They have helped me take a genuine interest in studying and the topics we learn about. Oh and I know you all love categories so I did that as well and provided a brief summary. Some apply to multiple categories too. Sometimes I add things to my subscribed list but only listen to a few episodes so I felt that it disingenuous for me to talk about them, but I wanted to share anyways. BTW Overcast is the best podcast app. Without further ado, here are my tops. :)

    Law

Criminal – complicated crimes and situations explained by victims, criminals, and bystanders

Life of the Law – legal applications and applying to everyday life

More Perfect – they’re on a break right now but this is the best one on the list IMO

The University of Chicago Law School Faculty Podcast – title is pretty self-explanatory, but they are just talks on legal topics by professors, scholars, and visiting attorneys

Serial – not spoiling this one. Listen to it!

Supreme Court Arguments – there are tons of them. Just search

    Undisclosed – investigating wrongful convictions

Above the Law - Thinking Like a Lawyer – Legal applications to everyday life

Up and Vanished —re-investigates the disappearance of Tara Grinstead, a beauty queen and teacher from GA

Breakdown —season 2 is better than season 1. Follows Justin Ross Harris case (son died in his hot car)

    Accused —re-investigates Beth Andes' murder

In the Dark — re-investigates Jacob Wetterling, currently in development for season 2

Sword and Scale—a lot like Criminal, but a lot darker

    Social Sciences

This American Life – one of the best podcasts. Varying stories from different backgrounds haha idk how to describe this one because every episode is so different

Planet Money – business, economics, and stories about people and their hustle. Some legal topics as well here

The Daily – daily News from NYT

Stuff You Should Know – Title

    NPR Politics – title

The Ezra Klein Show – I love Vox so and think they give great interviews and that’s what this is

Freakonomics Radio – essentially Planet Money but deeper in terms of financial topics

The Sporkful – Food! And the parallels between people and the things we eat

Pod Save America – only on episode two but loving this so far. It is about politics and the things people can do to affect change.

Intelligence Squared U.S. Debates – Oxford Style debates on political topics

How I Built This – Innovators, entrepreneurs, and their stories

Crimetown — currently one of my FAVORITES. Dissects the inner workings of the mob in Princeton, RI. Interviews actual mobsters and "wiseguys"

Beautiful/Anonymous —hosted by comedian Chris Gethard. 1-hour anonymous call, "no names, no holds barred." For those with voyeuristic tendencies (said affectionately)

    Natural Sciences

Radiolab – this could go under social science too, but a lot of their topics fit here. I would highly recommend this one. One of the best on this list

Invisibilia – “The invisible forces” that guide our actions. Partly could go under social science as well.

Hidden Brain – similar to Invisibilia but deeper

99% Invisible – haven’t listened to more than one episode but it seems good. It would be disingenuous for me to talk about it. I actually just downloaded a few and will listen this week!

Stuff You Should Know – 50/50 split between natural and social sciences.

Skeptics Guide to the Universe – Science news, conspiracies, and controversies

Reveal —takes a critical/investigative look at contemporary issues

Embedded—combine Reveal and Invisibilia and you get Embedded

    Humanities/Logic

You Are Not So Smart – best logic podcast I have found. They talk all about similar things to the lessons!

Lore – scary stories haha but they’re so good

Presidential – each episode is a different president, talking about their life story and what they did right and wrong as president

On Being – this is a philosophy podcast but I found it a little too boring for me after two episodes haha

Fresh Air – mostly about movies and actors, with some social science/political episodes sprinkled in. It is pretty good, just not for me

Unexplained —similar weekly episodes of creepy, unexplained events

    Myths & Legends — title

Other – Trivia, Stories and Self-Help

Ask Me Another – hilarious trivia podcast. One of my favs on the list

Death, Sex & Money – It's so good, and not what you're expecting

GameOverGreggy Show – “Four sometimes five best friends gather around THIS TABLE. Each bringing a random topic of discussion for your amusement.” I listen to this almost every day haha

The School of Greatness – Inspiring stories from people ranging from athletes to actors

    Mystery Show — it's cute

Magic Tavern — It's a really funny improv comedy podcast recorded from a medieval-esque tavern in an alternate universe called Foon.

The Joe Rogan Experience — Comedian Joe Rogan talks to an interviews a variety of people on different subjects.

I’ll stop now. Feel free to share yours too! This is by no means definitive and we all can learn from each other's tastes! :)

    Hope this helps!

Edit: I will continually update this list to account for everyone's suggestions!

    Edit 2: Updated again!

    Test Anxiety

Similar to many of you, I suffer from bad test anxiety. If I don't get in the zone within the first 5 questions, I panic for the whole test, effectively snowballing. Really bad too. It's causing 10-15 point swings lately. When I'm chill, I can score 170+ pretty consistently. Otherwise, it's the Wild West.

I freeze up, don't even go through my strategies, and I just feel like this is my first test ever. Everything I've done goes out the window. I misread rules. I forget diagrams. Hell I can't even answer a main conclusion question. I don't understand it. I feel like I can provide an in depth explanation to a vast majority of questions and games. But sometimes, I just feel like I don't know anything. It affects me most on games too. Perhaps because I'm used to finishing every game in less than 6 or 7 minutes. So when I don't, I panic and just move on. This happened during my September test and I scored 9 points below my average.

I've tried meditation, I work out 3x a week, and feel like my balance is pretty good with friends and family. But none of that seems to be helping much. All of this so weird to me. I'm not an anxious person whatsoever.

I was hoping for any guidance. I know this is different from most posts but at the same time, I feel that mental state is something that is sometimes over looked. But again, any help would be greatly appreciated.
