Maybe because the passage doesn't just go through time, but also different places. Would passing off Roman sculptures as Greek really be in the same path of evolution as differentiating functional vs decorative African masks? Would one even influence the other? The last paragraph sticks out to me as ruling out "evolution" as a descriptor, because it doesn't talk about the time period of African masks in relation to anything in the previous paragraph.
