Cancel September LSAT?

Hi,

This past week hit me with a wave of anxiety and I'm not sure if its because I'm just nervous for the test or if I'm not actually prepared or ready to take the exam. It's my first time taking the LSAT and I'm pretty stressed out.

I started studying in July with Kaplan. I was studying from 8 to 12 hours a day. After the second to last week of the course once finishing about 90% of all the material I felt I didn't get very far. I moved to Powerscore and finished all the books and workbooks within a week or two. I continued to study for about 12 hours a day just trying to retain information. I finished doing most of my drills from all the workbooks as well as Kaplan and I have started to take timed and untimed tests. My score seems to be at a standstill. I seem to be stuck with LG. I can solve all types of LG but my biggest challenge is finishing on time. I can at most get to only 3 sections. On top of that my Logical reasoning score is not too hot either. I have been making 7 to 8 mistakes per section of LR. In addition my Reading Comprehension has times where I make from only 3 mistakes to 7 or 8 mistakes.

I really want to get a 160 on my LSAT but right now I'm just averaging 155. At this point I started tackling the LR by breaking down the stimulus into components and analyzing the conclusion premise etc. I'm trying to figure out a way to look at it differently. I'm trying to change how I approach the question. But I really have no idea what I should do for September. I'm pretty bummed as well that today is the day I'm having my breakdown since yesterday was the last day to change it without losing all my money.

I just don't know what I should. I don't feel prepared but isn't that normal? I'm not sure people ever feel prepared to take this test...

I'm debating if just to try it once just to get past the building anxiety and stress I have created for this test or to wait until December.

I would really appreciate the advice.

Thanks.

@ I haven't really targeted certain sections within the Reading Comp. I usually do a full section and analyze afterwards my work. I seemed to notice that I was doing consistently well in Natural Science and Humanities rather than the other topics. Whether I was doing them first or last it didn't matter, I seemed to grasp the point of the passage way more. The level of difficulty didn't affect it too much either. If I'm reading a Social Science or Law passage whether its 1star or 4 I still get it wrong. I just can't seem to understand the point of the passage or why certain examples are use to prove a point for Social Science and Law.

It's pretty ironic that I can't seem to get those sections...

Social Science and Law sections

Hi, I'm consistently having problems with the Social Science and Law sections in the reading comprehension sections. I score almost perfect on my Humanities and Natural Science sections, but I can't seem to get more than 2 or 3 right within the two other areas. I was hoping there was some kind of strategy or method of thinking that I could try and incorporate that would help me within Social Science and Law.

If anyone has any good tips that would be awesome.

I was in the same position as you. I started studying June for September and didn't see an increase until I started doing Powerscore. I studied with Kaplan initially. However, powerscore can only get you so far. After studying for hours and hours after using the powerscore strategies I just didn't feel like it was enough. I postponed by September test and will probably take it in February. But I really recommend you to try the 7sage starter at least. It is soooo incredible and helpful. Initially I was hesitant, but I'm telling you its amazing! What 7sage does that other study books dont do is that it lets you get into the head of a high test taker. JY shows you what he thinks and how he approaches a question. At the end of the day the LSAT is not about memorization or anything like that, it is basically an IQ test meaning you have to change how you think. And the only way to realize that you are not attacking the question properly is by seeing how someone else looks at it. And not just that, but how it is supposed to be analyzed.

I was spending hour and hours everyday trying to boost my logical reasoning score, but it can only get you so far if you aren't tackling the fundamental problems. On top of that JY teaches you strategies that are fundamental to studying that no other book tells you. Such as Blind Review and Grammar lessons. In addition, he clearly explains how you get from point A to B in the logic diagrams.

I also just recently bought the trainer. After I finish the CC for 7sage, I'll definitely move on to the trainer and from there just do practice tests and redo the CC for 7sage again after a couple practice tests.

I recommend starting 7sage for sure and try not to waste too many PT's before you feel like you got the core concepts down.

Thanks @!

I have done at least 25 PT's since summer and I think I 'm going to take your advice and redrill those problems. Specifically for Logic Games. I'm just printing out the games and redoing them to really figure out if I am truly understanding it or it was just a matter of luck. I also make sure that I'm timing myself. Not to stop at the time of 10 min, but to understand how long it takes me to do a question and what I need to work on to get it under. At the end of the day, I'm in the mentality that you can't fit the time with the wrong technique. You need to master the technique before you get to the right time. I don't think I'll be doing any new PT's, but just going back on the PT's that I've done and making sure that I get the concepts down. Mainly for logic games. Logic games is really a matter of concept I realized. If you can't understand it fully on one game don't bother attempting the next one with out fully understanding it. Even if that means doing the game 20 times spread out throughout the week or month. I have definitely seen an improvement in reading comprehension from getting 8 wrong to getting 3 wrong with the 7sage technique.

Thanks for the advice. I'm sure once I go over the Practice Test that I've already taken and fully understand what I did wrong I'll start taking more tests.

Also I'm going to review the Core Curriculum from the beginning since I took a month break to study for my classes.

Study Schedule Advice

I was hoping to get other people's opinion regarding your study plan for 7sage.

I started studying in July intensively mainly with Powerscore and Kaplan.I finished all of the Powerscore books and I took the Kaplan diagnostic as well as the midterm exam. But I realized that the curriculum wasn't solving the core fundamental problems that I had. I started 7Sage around August/September and realized that my failure to grasp the concepts went a lot deeper. But by that time school started and I started falling back on the core curriculum study schedule. I finished the core curriculum problems, but I don't feel ready to start PTing. I was PTing in the summer with Powerscore and Kaplan and just did not see a good enough improvement to feel that I should waste the exams when I still don't have a full grasp on the key concepts for games and logical reasoning. I have printed out about 10 times each game from the core curriculum of the logic games and have just been doing them throughout the week. While doing logical reasoning and Critical Reading on the side with time, but also BR after.

I was wondering if anyone else is sticking to the concepts of Logic Games and just hardcore drilling or if after the core curriculum you went straight to PTing.

I'm sure there are multiple ways to study and everyone studies depending on how fast they get the concepts, but I'm truly interested to know whats your study technique and where you feel you are at your weakest.

I know my biggest problem is concentrating on the material enough to actually absorb it and remember it specifically when its the hard passages. I tend to read a paragraph or passage or anything and it just doesn't seem to stick. Whether its logic games, logical reasoning, or critical thinking, I realized I am such a passive reader, that I don't challenge the material whatsoever and because I seem to just take the words for what they are it takes me a while to really retain and tackle the topic when it becomes more challenging. I realized before I can even tackle answering the question, I need to be truly conscientious and focus on remembering and understanding what is going on.

Same position.

I started studying in June and felt that I could study hard enough to raise my score for September LSAT and it was just not happening. Initially, I ignored 7sage advice to study for this test longer than 2 months. But after 14 hours a day studying Kaplan and Powerscore and hardly reaching my dream score during untimed conditions and scoring much worse under time I realized that it takes a lot of practice and there will be ups and downs. You will feel defeated at times, but at the end of it just remind yourself why you are doing this and your passion to get into law school.

I think something that really helps me is knowing that I am learning to think way more critically. At the end of the day its the LSAT way of thinking that can help you not only in law school, but in general. When you listen to the news or read an article, even now that classes have started at the university, I see a lot of similar topics that the LSAT talks about and I try to critically read articles as I would if I were taking the Reading Comp section of the LSAT. Always ask questions, stay engaged, understand the multiple viewpoints, and main point.

When doing this you realize that the LSAT isn't just beneficial for getting into law school, but can be helpful in everyday circumstances.

I think you're safe for USD. I applied early on to USD in early November with a 158 and 3.65 GPA. I took my December lsat as well but I asked them to process the application before December came out. I got in with the deans scholarship which is 45,000 a year. Hope that helps.

Good luck!

@ Yeah. I think I might just do that and stop taking PT's until I completely master the first 25-35 Logic Games As for LR, besides Point of Disagreement and Agreement, there's not one question that I consistently do bad on, it usually has to do with its difficulty level. I'm thinking I'll just focus on practicing under timed conditions and just use the first 35 tests and BR those ones and master that before I start taking on the newer PT's.

User Avatar

@ I'm getting to all of them but I don't answer them all correctly. I had a couple tests where Id spend more time on the beginning ones and didnt get to the last 4, but I did worse off. I also noticed that the ones that I'm overly confident with on the PT's I tend to miss and I just completely misunderstood the stimulus under the pressure of time.

@ @ @ @

Thanks! The advice is really helpful!

I'm wondering if any of you spent/spend more time practicing Logic Games or Logical Reasoning.

As of lately I've been doing timed test and going over all the sections, but this month I'm spending any extra time I have reviewing Logical Reasoning. I'm wondering if you guys recommend switching it over to Logic Games, and focus on mastering Logic Games on the side.

When I BR for Logical Reasoning it takes me 2 or 3 hours per section. I write down on the excel a summary of what I got from the stimulus, what I think is the conclusion, what type of question stem it was, what concept stood out to me while reading it (basically a prediction of how I feel I would approach it ), I then write why I think each answer choice is wrong or right. @ I'm definitely going to take your advice and "write a paragraph about how I would handle this situation differently in future and try to stop and re-write what and how I should have gone about it."

Last month I mastered a big chunk of the grouping games and certain sequencing games. But I stopped to also try to catch up with Logical Reasoning.

I'm just so confused how to prioritize my time. Should I stop PTing and just focus on getting -0 work on Logic games. Should I continuing PTing and practice on the side?

PT34.S4.G4 - each of exactly six doctors

Hi,

I am beyond confused on one of the logic games

Each of exactly six doctors- Juarez, Kudrow, Longtree, Nance, Onawa, and Palermo is at exactly one of two clinics: Souderton or Randsborough. The following conditions must be satisfied:

Kudrow is at Randsborough if Juarez is at Souderton

Onawa is at Souderton if Juarez is at Randsborough

If Longtree is at Souderton then both Nance and Palerno are at Randsborough

If Nance is at Randsborough, then so is Onawa

If Palerno is at Randsborough, then both Kudrow and Onawa are at Souderton

So @"J.Y. Ping" solved it one way

L-> /N --> /O --> J --> /K --> P

--> /P

In order to get rid of the contradiction with the P's he negated /L and got

/N-->/O --> J--> /K--> P

However, I decided to find the contrapositive of the first statement and got

/P--> K--> /J --> O --> N --> /L

P ---> /L

But I have no idea how to remove the contradicting P's because L is already negated. I'm so confused regarding what to do next?

I feel like I'm missing a basic logic concept but I tried going back to the material and I still dont get it.

Timed vs BR

I'm pretty frustrated right now with my scores. When I BR I score in the 170's. But under time I score between the range of the high 140's to high 150's depending on the test specifically which logic game I get. But I'm consistently doing bad on Logical Reasoning under time. When I have all the time in the world I get around 3 wrong per section. But under timed conditions I can get up to 22 wrong both sections combined. What should I do?

22 Female. I’m a fourth year at UC San Diego studying Political Science and Environmental Studies. I want to pursue a career in Environmental Law. I was Director of Spirit in Student Council, interned at Coral Reef Ecology lab mapping out ocean floors to understand human impact on reefs, a member of CalPIRG, and participated in Model United Nations while I studied abroad in Israel.

My biggest worry is my low GPA: 3.56 and a low LSAT score. Haven’t taken the test yet, but I’m not a great test taker. I’m scoring around 155.

Idea 1: Discussing my passion for giving back to the community. During middle school and high school I actively raised awareness against the genocide in Darfur giving presentations to over 300 students 2 times per year and raising over 2000 dollars for the cause. I also volunteered at a teen to teen help hotline at cedar Sinai medical center during my high school years where I answered phone calls dealing with suicide, rape, child abuse, cutting etc. While I was studying abroad during my spare time I would volunteer at the local animal shelter.

Idea 2: Discuss my passion for Environmental Law. While I was studying abroad in Israel, I learned how in a region where ideologies cause instability and conflict throughout the territory peace can be established through environmental resources. (Ex Jordan). Jordan has very little water and Israel was able to establish peace with the country by providing them with Israel’s extra water from their desalination facilities.

Those points are so relevant! Thanks for that.

I've definitely learned this through the highs and lows of the LSATs so far.

1) No matter what score you get, good or bad, studying for the LSAT and the material on the LSAT is valuable for everyday life. Look at the experience as something positive. Especially when you are at your lowest and want to give up.

2) Yes, your dreams are important, but try not to get lost in it. It's always great to aim high. But don't forget that although you worked hard, put hundreds of hours, and really truly deserve to get into to your dream school, there's a chance it might not happen. You may not be able to get into the schools you were aiming for, but there are other paths and opportunities you can take to become a great lawyer.

My friend scored about 15 points lower from her PT's. I think adding an extra section when you PT can be helpful. I tire out pretty quickly and I think its helpful to try and build stamina and not tire too quickly once you get to the last section. I also agree taking the test in not the most ideal test taking conditions can also help you learn to focus when there is noise or others sorts of outside factors that can distract you.

Yeah it totally is! I jumped from a 145 to 158 after getting down the basics with Logic Games and some Logical Reasoning. You can totally do it! Don't be afraid to aim high and challenge yourself. Set your goal to be what you think is an impossible score. I really do think with enough time, dedication, and hard work you can reach if not your goal score, close to it.

GPA Question

Hi,

Was wondering how big of an impact a 3.65 GPA is vs a 3.66 GPA is for Law schools. I'm debating if I should take an extra class to raise my GPA, but I also want to make sure that I can get straight A's, not stress out too much, and study a little for the LSATs when I dont have midterms or finals. I'm kind of wondering what you guys think if taking the extra class is worth the headache?

@.busis Thanks David! I actually studied abroad last year in the Middle East and I decided to ask a couple of my professors from my program to write my letter of recommendation since I don't think I'll see them anytime soon. I'm hoping that could give me a little edge for the recommendations.

I worked with the Dean of my college in Student Council two years ago and since I was abroad for a year I thought it would be best to reach out to her now, just in case I don't have the time to work with her further this year since I'm trying to boost my GPA and get a high LSAT score.

But if you have any further comments or recommendations I would greatly appreciate!

Letters of Recommendation

Hi,

My question is regarding the letters of recommendation for LSAC. I decided that I am going to apply next year for law school (not ready for the LSAT), but I want to get my other requirements for the application process out of the way. I was wondering if I get my professors to send my letter of recommendations in this year, if I will be able to use it for next year's application. I just want to make sure that LSAC wont delete the letters from the system when the new application cycle begins.

I tried calling LSAC but they are closed today and I already contacted my professors for the letters of rec.

Raising GPA

Hi,

My question is regarding my GPA and how it looks for law schools. My GPA is really low right now its a 3.56 Poli Sci major and Minor in Environmental Studied. I was hoping to take extra classes to boost my GPA and was wondering how that would look for law schools. In addition, I was wondering if it looks better to take the courses at my University than at the extension school of the University or at a local community college.

Since attending classes at my actual university is really expensive I was hoping to take extra classes at the extension school or at a community college, but I was thinking that Law schools might look down on that. I attended university straight out of high school and the GE's during my freshman and sophomore year of college really killed me. I was wondering what was the best recommendation.

In addition, I am able to graduate earlier than expected this year, during winter quarter, and was thinking of taking extra classes for spring, summer session 1 and summer session 2 to hopefully get my GPA higher.

I'm planning to take a year off after graduating to apply for Law school. I'm taking my LSATs in February and possibly June if the February score isn't where I want it to be.

I'm trying to get my application as competitive as possible and hoping to get advice.

Thanks!

Max Time for Games

Hi I was wondering if there was a list that shows for each game how long you should spend on it? JY tells you at times during the core curriculum the max amount of time for a 160/170 score and I was hoping there was a list for all the games so I can gain a solid foundation for when I get to a game during the actual test around how long I should spend on it.
