I was considering taking a final PT on Wednesday but not scoring it until after I take the actual exam. That way I can practice / warm up without letting the score trip me up and it'd give me something to score after I take the actual test to help relieve some of that WHAT DID I GET anxiety haha.

When should I take my last PT

Hey everyone,

First time LSAT taker here. I'm taking the October LSAT on 10/10 and am hoping to get some input on when I should take my final PT. I've sort of been slingshotting between the mid 160s and low 170s on my PTs and was hoping to be more consistently in the 170s for game day. However, with the time I have left, I'm just going to do the best I can to get my best possible score and retake if necessary.

I'm curious if any repeat takers should advise on how to spend my last week and a half. I intend to take a PT this Sunday at the same time as my actual test to simulate it as best as possible. However, I also kind of want to take a last, final PT on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. That said, many people have advised not to take any PTs in the last week leading up to the actual test.

Hoping people can share what worked for them and advise me on any tips that might help me maximize my score.

Good luck to everyone else taking the October test!

My biggest tip would be to change your attitude. Right in your question you emphasized that you think the passages are boring. If you find something boring, it's almost impossible to fully focus on it. And if you can't focus on something, you don't have a snowball's chance of fully comprehending it. To improve on RC, you want to pique your own interest in the passage. And, in fact, they are often pretty interesting! You want to be a lawyer, lawyer's have to learn new things all the time, and these RC passages provide a rare opportunity to learn something new about a topic you otherwise would likely be unfamiliar with.

For me, my biggest consistent increase in RC came when I stopped looking at it as a chore and started looking at it as an opportunity to learn something new. To jumpstart this perspective shift in my brain, I scan for the main topic of the passage (often revealed in the first sentence or two) and when I identity it I think to myself "oh, cool! I get to learn about X."

For me, this made me go from missing an average of 7 per RC section to missing an average of 2. Hope it helps you as well!

If you haven't already, see if you can get accommodations for extra timing with LSAC. Your ability to properly read the questions quickly shouldn't be what is messing with your score and you deserve to get the accommodations you need to perform on the test to the best of your ability.

173 on PT 87!

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to brag a little since I'm self-studying and don't really have many people I can tell about this. I just got a 173 on PT 87 (BR 177)! I've been studying really hard and am super happy about my progress. Taking the October LSAT and hoping for a 171+. It's been a super inconsistent journey (I'd constantly backslide into the mid 160s). Just wanted to let everyone out there who may be struggling know that if you keep working at it and stay motivated, you should also be able to achieve your goal scores.

Confidence is key.

Best of luck to everyone and stay motivated. To all my fellow October LSAT takers, good luck in the home stretch before game day.

@ said:

It's not arbitrary whether or not you can be focused -- it's a choice. You can, and must, choose your focus and interest level by appropriating the right attitude to the task going in.

Rather than approach RC as a matter of 'I need to be focused' try going in with a more positive perspective. Try going in with the view of learning something new. Most of the time the passages are probably not on subject matter you are familiar of. Simply looking at it as an opportunity to 'learn something' can be all you need to organically 'keep focused'.

Try this: When the passage comes up, read the first line or two, then pause. Tell yourself some version of "Oh awesome, I'm going to learn about....French pastry design!" Then, before you start critiquing the validity and interest of that, quickly remind yourself that this is the first and perhaps the only opportunity you will ever have to learn about French pastry design. Remind yourself that following this exercise you will be smarter than you were starting it. Then start reading. Aim to learn EVERYTHING about it. Because why not?

I don't know if that helps or not, but in my opinion this is necessary. At the end of the day, nobody can teach you how to be interested in something, but I guess if one finds a few passages on some 17th Century Feminist Space Explorer or whatever uninspiring then they're going to have a really tough time with some of the dry stuff they will need to read at law school :)

I can't tell you how much this little distinction of my perspective has helped. I have always tried to identify and clearly define the main topic of the passage after the first couple lines but since your recommendation I have taken the extra second to try to get myself excited about the topic after I've identified it (even if it's literally just thinking "this is interesting!"). Since I started doing this, I've been much more consistently missing ~2 on the set. Occasionally I'll have an extra hard passage that throws my average off, but as a whole I've been much more consistent and I'm pretty sure it's literally just because I stop and take a few seconds to try to convince myself that the passage is interesting (and sometimes it genuinely is!). Thanks for the tip.

Personal Statement / Diversity Statement swap

Hello,

I just finished the first draft of my PS and DS and am hoping to find somebody to swap with as my next step in the editing process. Please only message me if you're willing to review mine as well and not just take my feedback and run.

Thanks in advance!

I would often wake up early to take practice tests before work so just due to a lack of time I wouldn't add in an experimental. I made sure to do a few tests with an added section before game day just to get the feel of it. I struggled a little bit with stamina while practicing, but in the actual test my adrenaline was going and I never felt any fatigue.

Inconsistency on RC

Hey everyone,

My PT scores have been varying wildly from low 160s to low 170s, with pretty much all of the variation coming from RC. I consistently get between -2 to -4 on LG and LR, but my RC scores vary from -2 to -10. It seems to have less to do with the question types and more to do with if I happen to be able to retain focus while reading the passages (which appears almost arbitrary). If anybody has any advice about how they stay focused on the passages while reading, I'd be grateful. I try to convince my brain I'm interested in the topics and actively work on a low res summary, but it seems to be hit or mess on whether it's successful.

I thought the Mali and the Frederick Douglass sections were similar in difficulty. That said, I really hoped Mali would be experimental because my dumb ass panicked and changed a right answer to a wrong one with like 5 seconds left on the clock because I got way too in my head about things. Whoops. A bit pissed off I cost myself the point, but ultimately felt confident about the RC section. Short stories had a couple hard questions, but ultimately I found it to be pretty moderate.

LR felt easy to me too, with the exception of one question that I kept changing my AC on. First three LGs were super easy and I got to the duet game with 13 minutes left on the clock and still had to guess on some questions.

Still, feeling pretty good about things. Probably got around a 170, although I'm holding out hope my guesses on the last LG were good ones and I got a 173 or higher!

Applicant with Learning Disabilities

Hey everyone,

I have just taken the October LSAT (hoping for the best!) and have been starting work on my law school applications. When deciding what to write about for my personal statement, I felt compelled to write about my experience going through school as somebody with a learning disability. I intend to talk about the challenges I faced due to my neurodiversity and the ways I overcame those obstacles.

I am a little concerned that because this is my topic of choice, law schools will assume I took the LSAT with accommodations. I did not, in part because I did not have documentation of my disability within the past five years and in part because I honestly felt I didn't need them to succeed. I know that law schools should not and probably do not judge test takers with accommodations any differently, however I have in the past experienced discrimination in academia due to my learning disabilities and am nervous about law schools somehow looking at my test score differently due to any possible assumptions.

My instinct tells me I'm being ridiculous and should let go of that fallacious assumption and have faith that the admission deans aren't biased and take comfort in the fact that if they were, that's not a school I'd want to go to anyways. However, another part of me feels that I should add an addendum specifying that I didn't have accommodations on the LSAT, maybe adding that it's in part because I didn't qualify for them due to a lack of recent documentation.

If anybody has advice, please share it. That said, the a central theme of my PS is getting past the shame and stigma associated with neurodiversity, so it does admittedly feel disingenuous to even be writing this post and I feel more inclined to simply not write this addendum and let things unfold naturally. Just curious to see if anybody else has a different perspective.

It'll probably be between -6 and -9 depending on the curve. Hard to say. I personally think the curve will be somewhere in the middle for my test. It had some pretty challenging curve breakers (imo) but overall didn't seem to be a particularly difficult test.

Oct. 27 is so far away...

Just general lamenting here. Took the LSAT today and I did not realize quite how uncomfortable it is to take a test and not immediately know your score. I realize everybody is probably in the same boat but holy crap I wanna know my score haha. It like hurts. Anybody have any advice for getting my mind off it in the 2.5 week wait?

I'd attempt to. I just now am noticing that lawhub is back up. My advice Victoria would be to just stay the course and try not to worry about this shitstorm that's going on right now.

As a fellow Sunday taker, my advice would be to just try not to worry about it as much as you can. You can't control what will or won't happen, you can just control your attitude and response. Best thing to do is just not stress. Still, absolutely bullshit this is happening and I'm super sorry for all the test-takers dealing with this rn.

I took my last PT yesterday (I take it on 10/10) and I took PT91+ on lawhub. It was helpful for me to take my last one on lawhub to get familiar with that platform over 7sage.

Any last minute advice from repeat takers?

Hey everyone,

I'm taking the LSAT for the first (and hopefully last) time this Sunday. My goal is to score at least a 171, which I've done on 6 of the last 7 PTs I took. I took my last PT today and am planning to only do some light drilling tomorrow and the day after. I'm curious if anybody who's taken the test before can give some advice about how to ensure you do as well on game day as you have been in your PTs. I think it's important I stay confident and don't put too much pressure on things, but I'd be happy to hear any advice y'all have for ensuring you score to the best of your ability.

Thanks in advance for any insights and good luck to everyone taking October!

First 180!

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to share that I got my first 180 on a PT! It wasn't a fresh PT, it was the same one I used for my diagnostic many months back, and even though I remembered very few of the questions I'm sure that inflated my score to some extent. I was given the advice to retake old PTs during my last week before my test and I'm mainly sharing this to let you all know that it's good advice I'd recommend. It helps boost confidence which is essential going into game day and still lets you practice pacing and the like without burning yourself out in the last week. Definitely found it worthwhile for myself and would encourage others to try as well. It's particularly fun retaking your diagnostic to remind yourself how much you've grown over the course of your studies.

Good luck to all my October brethren. Rooting for y'all!

I think you should do what works best for you. I'll do this if I know it's a NA or SA question, but otherwise I tend not to consciously break up the stim into its component parts (although I often do this unconsciously while reading). The trick is just finding whatever method helps you answer the questions as quickly and accurately as possible.

I don't even think it was particularly hard, I just kept falling into time sinks I knew the answer to for whatever reason.

The LR section on 92 absolutely demolished me. I've been consistently going -0 to -2 on LR on my last four prep tests and this one murdered me to the point where I just trashed the test and redid it without scoring. I know that was probably bad form, but I was a week away from test day and didn't want to totally demolish my self-esteem that close to the test.

I think it's beneficial. Even if you don't end up having a game that resembles any of them, it helps train your brain to stay calm when you see something novel on the test and teaches you to keep thinking critically instead of just falling into memory mode. So even if that particular game would not be seen, it still helps you train your brain in a manner that's very beneficial for the test.
