Retake Advice

Hey 7Sagers,

My worst nightmare happened. I underperformed on the June LSAT. I knew I royally fudged up RC, so at least I expected the score I got in my email yesterday. I already moped around for a few weeks, and now I'm ready to gear up for a retake.

I was consistently going -0 in LG the months leading up to June, and yet I froze during G3. I've done every game ever released (multiple times) using the FoolProof Method. I think test anxiety contributed the most to my score decrease. Any retakers out there with helpful advice on how to combat this? I was thinking of doing 30 minute sections instead (to allow some time for freak-outs during the real thing, lol).

Congrats to everyone who reached their target scores!! Hoping to join y'all later this year :)

@ The last few of us showed up right before the proctors started the clock again. Extra time was not needed, thankfully!

@ I'm not sure- I haven't applied for need based waivers on LSAC. Columbia explicitly mentioned my LSAT score, so I thought they were trolling. So strange.

@ (these don't give out fee waivers at all)

Hey David! I actually did receive a fee waiver from Columbia. I don't have a stellar LSAT on file, which made me question why I received one.

@ I received the fee waiver from UVA that mentioned my academic credentials as well. I don't think it was just a mass email because some of my friends with higher LSATs did not receive a fee waiver, and they're signed up on CAS. So it seems like they're taking more into consideration? I don't like these games haha.

I can't speak for anyone else, but a lot of the schools that have sent me fee waivers are pretty specific on why they're sending it. They'll mention my GPA, LSAT score, diversity, or all of the above.

Many schools do send out mass emails if you're on the CAS list, but it seems the higher ranked schools are more selective with their fee waivers and will actually mention the reasons why you're an attractive candidate.

Ehhh, Texas in general, yes. UT, no. I went to UT for undergrad. Liberal campus in a liberal city!

There were three bathrooms available at my testing center, but two went "out of order" conveniently right before testing began. I felt like I was in a jungle during my 15 minute break. The proctors closed the door on a few of us, but they ended up letting us in after hearing what happened.

This definitely threw me off (I was almost in tears..not a good start to my RC section), so I'd urge you to just be prepared for the unexpected. Little things like this can happen to anyone on game day.

Insight from a test writer

I was able to speak with one of the test writers at a LSAC forum and wanted to share:

I asked this test writer if there was a reason why LSAC is throwing "odd ball" games at us more often. He informed me that LSAC is aware of the mechanical approach test prep companies teach their students and worry this is defeating the purpose of the section. He realizes that most students may wonder, "Why am I solving games with animals?? I want to be a lawyer!" The purpose of the LG section is to prepare us to read a set of facts and determine what must be true, what can be true, and what must be false. Much like how we'll read statutes such as the infamous U.S. Tax Code and have to determine what's required, what's allowed, and what's forbidden. If you keep this in mind, you'll never be caught off guard.

Hope this sheds some light!

In at Columbia!

I've been tearing up for the past hour haha. Never imagined I would be making a post like this on 7Sage.

Just wanted to thank this awesome community and @"david.busis" . The advice I received on this forum and blind review calls has been invaluable.

@ I agree! Being able to know exactly when and where you went wrong is extremely valuable.

@ Both. I did get faster upload speeds at Starbucks, so looks like I'll be doing my uploads there unless I find a better option. Thanks!

@.james Thank you!! This sounds like my best bet.

LSAT nightmares!

Hey 7Sagers,

I'm starting this thread so we can have a few laughs. Share your scariest LSAT nightmare(s)!

I woke up in a Saw game. Jigsaw informed me that I had TWENTY minutes to finish one of the hardest LG sections I've ever seen (PT 27 with the snakes and lizards game, omg).

@.rizeq I definitely study while waiting! Haha I was just hoping there was a less painful way to upload them.

I've worked at four different law firms. None of them requested a transcript, but my GPA was on my resume.

I wouldn't worry about it! Especially since it is a family friend. If he does end up asking for a transcript, I highly doubt he'll remember exactly how many A+'s you said you received in the interview.

Recording PTs

For those of you who record sections or PTs, where do you upload them? I got tired of trying to find space on my measly 11GB phone and upgraded to the GoPro. However, it takes my computer nearly 5 hours to upload just one logic game recording on any cloud service.

Maybe it's my wifi? Do y'all just go to Starbucks or a place with fast wifi to upload? Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated!

Timing Issues

Hello fellow 7sagers,

I'm trying to decide whether to sit out another cycle. I'm blind reviewing in the 170s, but I can't seem to get my actual score up from the low 160s. I've gone through JY's course twice, the LSAT Trainer, and Manhattan RC. My brain often turns to mush on the harder, convoluted questions under intense timing conditions. I started taking timed PTs around mid October but can't seem to get over this anxiety. I've taken about 10 PTs. Clean copy BR each time. I really need advice on how to get over my timing issues. LG is my strongest section. The timing issues only affect me with RC and LR.

I'm considering postponing until February, but I know applying that late in the cycle would severely hurt my chances at getting accepted to high ranked schools with a scholarship, as most of the seats and scholarship money will be gone by then.

I've been studying 5+ hours everyday (8+ on the weekends) and work full-time. I've been at this since late August, so I fear I'm risking burnout. It would be extremely painful to have to keep pushing through until February, but I know the golden rule is "Don't take the LSAT until you are 100% ready." :(

Things to consider:

- Very scared I won't have new stuff to work with if I sit out another cycle. Only about 30 fresh PTs left.

- Aiming for 165+

Rec Letters

I currently have rec letters from a business law professor and an attorney who was my supervisor at an internship last summer. Would it be appropriate to have my mentor write one? Google doesn't offer much insight for this topic. My mentor has been extremely helpful to me this past year, and I feel she can speak highly of my abilities and qualities better than any other professor I've had. She just graduated law school in May.

It's definitely possible, but that would be tough if you're not already scoring mid-high 160s. Those last few points to break 170 are no joke. On the bright side, the 7Sage curriculum should definitely give you a boost in your score if you take the time to master the fundamentals. What's your weakest section? You can get the most bang for your study buck by whittling LG down to -0/-1. Ideally, you want to see your goal score on at least 5 PTs before sitting for the real thing.

I know UT Austin accepts February scores. If you absolutely need to apply this cycle, you could shoot for December with February as a backup. It's not uncommon to get accepted off the wait-list after receiving a higher February score.

P.S.- hook 'em!! \m/

Hey! Cornell's interview was very laid-back. There are six or so questions, half written and half video-recorded. Like most interviews, you're likely to get a question about why you want to go to Cornell and why Ithaca. There's really no way to prepare for the written questions. They just want to know your thought process and make sure you can express your opinions clearly under time pressure.

My email gave me a 10-day deadline btw. Best of luck!

Getting better at Flaw questions will help your LR tremendously, as it intertwines with all question types that have arguments. I see you don't have a 7Sage course- what study resources are you using? How are you doing with conditional reasoning? Definitely know the common invalid and valid argument forms and types of flaws like the back of your hand. Once you remember them, you will have to actually put this to use by drilling Flaw and Inference questions. You have to familiarize yourself with the trap answers because the LSAC just keeps recycling through them.

Are you going over all the wrong answers for flaw questions in depth? When I struggled with that question type, that's what helped me the most. You have to think, "No, this isn't what this type of flaw looks like" in order to eliminate answers quickly and confidently.

Are you pre-phrasing? For example, don't just pick "assumes what it's trying to prove" on a hard Flaw question because you don't understand what's going on. I was guilty of this lol. Don't jump into the ACs until you know what the flaw is. You have to really force yourself to do this at first, but it will pay off tremendously.

Columbia Interview Help

Hey guys,

It still feels so weird to be on the other side of the LSAT haha. I (surprisingly) received an interview invite from Columbia today. I would greatly appreciate any insight! I've heard their interview can be pretty tough.

Interview with WashU:

I received the interview request a couple hours after I submitted my app. An admissions officer interviewed me via Skype. She was super friendly and didn't try to trip me up at all. A few questions I remember:

"Tell me about yourself."

"Why do you want to go to law school?"

"Why WashU?"

"Why did you choose the college you went to?"

"Have you ever been to St. Louis?"

"What do you hope to accomplish in law school?"

"What are your hobbies?"

I think the only tough question I had centered around the law school in my city. My interviewer noted what undergrad I went to and asked whether I wanted to attend the law school there since I was still in the same city.

Funny side note- When I started the Skype interview, I thought it was odd that my interviewer's camera was off. I brushed it off and and completed the interview talking to my interviewer's Skype picture. Towards the last few minutes, I realized I had to push a button to allow her video to show since she wasn't in my contacts. I was mortified and figured I had messed everything up (not smiling when I was supposed to, etc). Luckily, that must not have affected my interview too much- I was accepted two days later :)

I bought the 180 watch a few months ago, and it's been great! If you're okay working with a bezel, you might as well get a cheaper watch though. The main thing to love about this watch is that it takes away all the guesswork (much like the Mastermind, I'm sure).

It doesn't look like a LSAT watch from far away, so I don't feel like a total nerd when I forget to take it off after my lunch break at work.

I don't think they have a specific score range for fee waivers. My score on file isn't impressive, and I received one last month. My friends with a 172+ did not receive one.

Here's to hoping my retake tomorrow changes that :)

Drilling and Review

Hey everyone,

Like many of you, I'm supplementing the 7sage course with the Trainer. The past few weeks I've been going through Mike's drills for the LR types I'm weakest in. After every question (and before checking the answers) I write out a brief summary of the stimulus (conclusion, reasoning, assumption, etc) and then the reason I chose the answer I did. If I get it wrong, I write out why the right answer is right and why the answer I chose was wrong. This process takes a long time, but I am definitely benefitting from it. Those of you scoring 170+, do you benefit from writing out summaries? Or what process works best for you during review? Currently scoring in the mid 160s and am determined to reach the 170s by Februrary. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Letters from professors who know you well and can uniquely speak about your capabilities in the classroom are much better than the letters that say "John was great. He received an A in my class."

If a professor can also speak about your character, there's an extra wow factor. For example, I not only did research for one of my recommenders but also volunteered at his events and was even asked to babysit a couple times. You want your recommenders to have specific examples and personal stories that can attest to your capabilities.

Hope that helps!
