Final Week Study Plans December 2015 LSAT

Alright ladies and fellas, we have 6 days until game day. Just wondering what people think of the study regimen for the last few days.

Crunch hard? Rest hard? Day-On/Day-Off?

I'm thinking of going way hard until Thursday, and a very light day Friday, but I have also been advised not to.

Opinions? Your plans?

Offices Game Dec 2015

Since everything is released now from LSAC, I believe this question is fair game. Is there any way someone could direct me to a video explanation of the LG section from December 2015 exam? I think that would be PT 77. I usually score -2 or better in LG which carries my score, but the last two games in that section annihilated me in December. Game 4 was just difficult, but Game 3 was a "pattern game" (as it has been described on online threads).

Preferably a JY explanation because JY is my LSAT lord and savior, amen. But, if any video is online anywhere with a walk-through, I would love to know about it. Just worried a miscellaneous game like that may come up again, and I can't afford to blow the LG section twice in a row if I plan to matriculate in the fall.

PS - saw manhattan prep's diagram and that didn't help me much. Even with the questions, diagram, and answers in front of my face I couldn't figure out the strategy. Would prefer to see a video of someone else doing it.

Thanks in advance, 7Sagers.

For the record, I think it is worth noting that A is also wrong because of the phrase "without providing justification." The ornithologist in fact does attempt to justify how he was so super concealed that it didn't effect his study. Thus, not only is it a less-bad assumption to make than D, but it is also factually inaccurate. If someone critiqued this hypothetical ornithologist and say "ayo brah, you had an effect on the birds," he could respond with "nah, homie I was concealed in a well-camouflage blind, and that is my justification for why I didn't effect the experiment." (Although, I'm not confident that is how scientists talk.)

I picked A first, but on BR recognized that phrase as a major flaw in answer A. Hence, I switched to D.

BC vs BU

I've posted a couple desperate discussions, but this one is more lighthearted. I'm mostly just curious (haven't even started applying yet).

My research indicates a brawl between these two schools that goes beyond the athletic/regional rivalry. Some articles say BU is better (as per the rankings), but ATL seems to rank BC higher. Plenty of discussion boards to this point go back and forth with reasons for one or the other.

Wondering if any sagers have an opinion. #34 BC Law or #26 BU Law?? Let it ride.

Acceptable First PT Score?

Just got a 144, blind review 151 on my first ever PT (June 2007). I've only been studying for about 2 months, and I'm not very far into the course. Thus, I know my score will naturally improve by December or Feb when I take it for real.

However, that score is absolutely terrible, obviously, and I'm more than a little bit scared. Would love to hear from some other fellas and ladies; where did you guys start out when you just began studying? Is 144/151 a normal PT for my stage of the game? My goal is roughly 160 or higher for the schools that interest me. Fully aware that I'm not T14 material, but I also am not going to go to some scrub school just so I can say I have a law degree. I'm striving for slightly above average, which means improving approx 15-20 points. Is this realistic???

Sweating this....

@ holy crap. thank you so much. that was profoundly specific and I really appreciate that. I'll look for those employment summaries for all my schools, but that is an excellent kick start. I have heard good things about living in AZ. I don't think I'd mind it.

PS-I would do anything to go to USC or UCLA, and would love to work in California, but I dont know if my LSAT/GPA combo will be high enough. Definitely plan on applying regardless, hoping for a miracle.

"Almost" certainly definitely throws me, even with Jon's explanation.

Jon says we are assuming that the economic incentive will grow enough... but I'm thinking that we are not. Instead I'm thinking we "almost" are certain that will happen, but if it does not happen, then we were wrong, which the "almost" implies. Does the "almost" not leave room for error? Should I go forward and read "almost certainly" as "certainly" every time?

This particular question is in the past, and I'm obviously not combatting a 7sage mentor, nor the answer key, but I'm concerned for future questions, and the implication (or lack thereof) of the word 'almost.'

Any insight would be appreciated.

@ I'm mostly interested in sport law and entertainment law (in that order), but it is my understanding that big law is the most common and most beneficial first step before finding my niche. I'm mostly looking at ASU right now, as they offer a sport law and business emphasis. All schools I'm looking at (except USC @) rank between 26 (ASU) and 34 (BC UNC Georgia OSU all tied). If you say it doesn't matter then you recommend I base my decision on where I want to work after graduation, as opposed to the rankings/courses they offer?

@ @.hopkins @

All of you guys, this is amazing insight. I hope other 7sagers can read this and interpret analogously, because I feel a bit selfish and spoiled by all of you. Honestly, can't thank you enough for the multitude of detail. PS -- Pacifico, sorry to blow up your Sage while you were at a wedding! Hope you had a good time.

I don't know that I'll have the grades for T14. Naturally, I'm going to try. My UGPA was 3.34, so I'm really going to have to powerhouse this Dec LSAT (feeling a retake in Feb no matter what because I don't see how it can hurt). But assuming I'm not accepted into a T14, I guess BU and BC just jumped up quite a bit in my prospect list.

Next thought I'm now having though is this. How far geographically does this rule of thumb apply? I mean UNC or UGeorgia are also on my radar, but if that's just as bad (or almost as bad), I don't want to waste time or money on those apps either....

Pacifico, since you seem to have a strong knowledge of sport/ent law, what non-sport/ent concentration might you compare it to? I've heard mixed reviews including Intellectual Property, Trademark/Copyright/Patent (which sounds painstakingly boring, but I honestly don't know much about it), and litigation. Plus, now you've added transactional law.... Wish I had more time to do research thoroughly, but I'm 2 months to test day and scrambling accordingly. I'm about to quit my job tomorrow or Monday to focus on this 100%.

Personal Statement Recommendation For You

Anyone working on their personal statements (whether just starting or polishing the final), I strongly suggest reaching out to David Busis (www.davidbusis.com). He's the guy who wrote 7Sage's personal statement add-on lessons (which you also should buy). I worked with him directly to help my essay along. We brainstormed about strong topics, organization, and articulation of key ideas. TREMENDOUSLY helpful. Reasonable hourly rate, and well worth it. He's not the kind of guy to milk the clock, and the thorough advisory letters and edits he writes for you offer you insights that will allow you to make fairly drastic changes to your paper. If you're committed to differentiating your personal statement, he is your guy. Any questions about my work with him, message me directly and I'll clear it up for you.

Good luck to all sagers.

@ @ Alright let me take one small sidestep and throw out (to anybody) why does Phoenix suck?? Traffic doesn't really phase me as a New Yorker. My people either drive 12 or 120, and lanes are suggestions.

@.hopkins thank you for those links. I'll check the second one out shortly. That first one though, I couldn't tell if it was a reliable website. Sometimes I do pretty basic searches and it comes back with results of only 4 schools... But if you say it's good I'll take your word for it. 7Sage hasn't steered me wrong yet. I love this website/course/discussion. Thank you so much.

TX officially off the list lol. I hadn't done my research on it yet, I only had it on thus far bc I've heard good things. Done.

What do you mean about ASU "that would apply outside the region as well?" Are you saying that it might be strong enough of a sport law program that it would be okay to go outside the region where I'd like to settle (Boston)?

Choosing Schools: Geography

Thoughts of the day:

Had a phone call last night with a close college friend who is very business minded. We discussed my current standing with LSAT prep. I confidently believe I'm on pace to get into some pretty awesome schools (top 30). My favorites are constantly changing, but these days my eye is on Arizona State University. They have a sport law concentration (I majored in sport management at UMass for undergrad), and their law school is in downtown Phoenix (30min from main campus in Tempe). Everything about their program sounds phenomenal, and right up my alley. With 18 pro teams in Cali and 4 in AZ, I feel like my networking potential is evident.

My "fear the fork" fantasies have been limitless, until the phone call. In summation, my friend made me aware that if I go to law school on the west coast, I will likely struggle to find a job on the east coast where I'm from. (I live in NY now, would ideally love to move to Boston after school, but I would really like to go south for school.)

My questions boil down like this. Does it make sense to go far away to school (AZ, Cali, TX, Georgia, Florida), if I would like to live in Boston? Or should I stop being a snow-pansy and establish myself at BU/BC/Northeastern?

Bottom Line: How easy is it to find a job on the opposite coast of the school you attend???

I know this was wordy, sorry, I'm in borderline panic mode after last night's deflating conversation.

@ thank you, that is very good to know. I don't have much regional preference nor any specific allegiance to an area (at this point), but I do know I'd like to go away from home (New York), with the option of national portability. Where would you suggest I research national portability of schools below the top 20? (Specifically, ASU, UC Davis, UNC, UGeorgia, BC/BU... my range is mid 20s to mid 30s.)

Thank you for your insight. I'm not K-JD, but barely. I finished undergrad in 2014, and intend to matriculate in Fall 2016 (23 years old). I have a bit of work experience in that time frame, although I think its safe to say my internships during college are more impressive than anything I've done since then. But yes, I do have some things going for me that a K-JD may not. In light of that, would you say it makes more sense to consider the US News rankings more seriously than the ATL rankings, because I may have an edge in employment outcomes?

US News vs Above The Law

Seems to me that these two websites are the most popular as far as law school research and rankings. I'm finding in several cases that they don't always jive with each other though.

I'm scoring 160s on my PTs, take LSAT in Dec, so I'm not looking at T14. So, it doesn't matter to me that Yale is US News #1 and ATL #6.... What does concern me is that USC (my top prospect) is US News #20 and does not even make the ATL Top 50... and Arizona State (2nd favorite, 2nd highest ranked on my app list) is US News #26 and ATL ~36ish.

Which is the most reliable? Is there a third reliable site I don't know of? How heavily should I concern myself with these rankings/school prestige?

As always, I thank you all in advance for your insights.

Club Sports in Law School?

Just throwing this out there, has anyone/a sibling/a friend played a club sport while attending law school? The schools I'm eyeing these days have club hockey teams that practice 2h/wk and play 2 games/weekend (~8-10h/wk commitment). Wondering if anyone knows if this is feasible, or if I need a reality check. I'm definitely eligible by NCAA rules and regs, but I'm going to law school to learn and network, not to screw around and graduate with no employment. Thus, if it would make more sense to devote myself to a moot court or an academic club, then I will do so...but it would be really nice if I could do it all.

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks all.

So LG3 rocked me, and I don't feel good about LG4 either. Usually my LG is near perfect. I'm talking -2 for an oversight and a rule substitution question. However, I think I did very well on RC, which I usually bomb on. LR neutral.

Benefits and drawbacks of a Feb retake? NEED a 160 for all of the schools I care to attend, and even if there is a healthy curve, I'm not sure I'll score in that range.

Anyone else in a similar boat? Need to vent? Need to retake? Not sure if I should be planning on waiting two more months before I can send apps. Might really hurt me. SO LOST.

@ dont cancel, you can only take 3x in 2 years including cancellations, so you might as well see what you got.

also, @ has been pretty dead on with both of his posts that i've read, and you're jumping at him pretty quick. you guys are acting ridiculous. but dont ask advice if you dont want to heed answers that are unappealing. I suggest you both take a deep breath and end this thread, because neither of you is going to convince the other of anything.

7Sage has been a phenomenal platform for teamwork, motivation, and helpful advice/constructive criticism in conquering what is likely to be the second most grueling test of your life (the first being the bar should you choose to take it). Keep the positive flow. This is not a shady blog/chat room for cyber bullying or condescension. Ultimately the only people judging your law school aptitude are the adcoms, not some fella ya met online who said you will never be good enough for the T20.

@ Well, I would presume based on your screen name that we may be in agreement; to answer your question I specifically want to work in hockey. I would also be interested in football, or MMA. (That being said, of course it only makes sense to stay as open minded as possible.)

I appreciate those institution recommendations. For me, admission to UCLA would be a small miracle, but OSU is attainable. I have also been researching UMiami(FL), as they have a joint focus of sport and entertainment law, but with a 2015 ranking of ~63rd best law school, it doesn't sound too prestigious for my anticipated job application process, which naturally is the ultimate goal. I would imagine "The U" would have a decent amount of networking possibilities, and there are quite a few (9) florida sports teams between Miami, Orlando, Tampa Bay, and Jacksonville (Atlanta not far either) across 4 major sports.

User Avatar

@ thank you so much for such a thorough response. that offers a ton of clarity. i'm particularly surprised to hear what you say about the schools that boast a good program. I'm interested in UMiami for that very reason -- they claim to have a good sport & ent combo program. (Plus I live in New York so staying on the east coast would be convenient). However, if it is as unimportant as you say, then maybe its not worth getting hung up on that one school. My confusion, though, is that even if networking is #1 (which I fully believe), wouldn't it be important to be able to take quality sport/ent law classes in school, as opposed to hypothetically going to UNC which is ranked higher but only offers one sport law class?

User Avatar

@ i would do anything to get into either of those schools. i have a 3.34 gpa in college though so i'd really have to blow the LSATs out of the water, and my scholarship still may not be enough to make law school affordable. i'm really banking on getting in somewhere with a scholarship, since i'll be paying for my own school and i'm not very wealthy. Hence, the grind!

Hey Mark,

Take this with a grain of salt because I have never cancelled my score. However, I too took the Dec 15 and Feb 16 LSAT, so I know what you experienced in that respect. Also analogous, I too have PT scores in the low 160s.

December, bro if you bombed because of the LG there, who can blame you. That offices game was a sick joke. I score -2 on my LG sec consistently, and even when I mess things up, I always get it after JY explains things. That offices game.... with the questions, answers, diagram, and JY's explanation I still dont think I could do it alone in my bedroom, let alone under the timed pressure of the real deal. That RC was also brutally hard, so give yourself a break there. I scored 156; wasn't thrilled.

February I found to be much easier, and the LG section seemed pretty straightforward. Because of this, I don't think your issue is your ability, but rather your mentality. I strongly recommend you focus on controlling that for June. Especially with your available "new, pristine" materials so limited for the next 4 months of study. I absolutely would recommend seeing someone professionally. The stigma is absolute nonsense. Going to a therapist does not imply psychological damage or anything ridiculous like that. Instead they may be able to give you insight into your personal struggle to perform well (as you can based on your PTs) under pressure. I think that "count to ten when you're stressed" stuff is mostly bullshit, but a therapist can delve deeper. Especially when you speak to your goals, they'll likely have good advice. Just a thought.

Or, don't spend money on a doctor but definitely address that yourself.

Most importantly, DO NOT cancel another score. Even if you bomb, just believe in yourself and take pride in your other sections.

hahah I have such an affinity for this post. I quit my job to study for the lsat, and its been my "only" priority (other than basic life stuff naturally) since August. Feels very weird waking up today with zero to do. At least yesterday the super bowl kept me busy. But you guys nailed it. Gotta find a summer job or 2 and stay true to the gym routine.... I imagine its not so bad to coast this summer, besides making money, considering we're about to get whopped in law school in 7 months.

Semi-Relevant question: speaking of "things to do" anyone know when the best time is to do financial aid research? Obviously I wont even know where i'm going until March when we get our scores.

User Avatar
mstone219362
Sunday, Feb 07 2016

I think you STRONGLY underestimate how hard a 170 is. So while Option 2 makes far more sense than option 1, you still should set some realistic incremental goals. Start with a goal to get into UMiami at #63 (for example). Prep until your prep tests are fairly their range. Then a more difficult school like #34 of BC. Then Georgia at whatever they are. (I'm just naming schools I like.) Then rise your goals up the rankings until you hit your peak. If you get a 170, great. But if you're a procrastinator who is banking on a 152 from yesterdays test, I'm sorry but you're not going to go from 50% to 90% of LSAT takers in 6 months. Do those numbers even make sense to you? Bell curve, brah.

Also, USC (like many other Cali schools) has a reputation of being a GPA snob. I have done a ton of research on USC because it is my second favorite prospect. I have a 3.4, I'll score in the low 160s, and everything I read tells me I have no chance. You're likely to be in the same boat, not accounting for essay, resume, etc. Take a look at the LSAC website's school search. They have a calculator that gives you your chances of getting into a school based on your GPA & LSAT; I think it works by juxtaposing your grid with those of past applicants. Even if you get your 170, its just unlikely. I'm telling you this because I don't think it is reasonable to expect a 20 point jump in 6 months to get into the #14-20 schools. USC is #20. As far as transferring in, one of the posts above me nailed it. Everyone is going there to bust ass and compete. (Consider also the students who are WAY smarter than the rest of Southwestern Law School students, but they got full rides and fat schollys to SW, and don't have much/don't want debt/whatever. They're gunna bump your motivated ass down the list.) You're not going to just walk in and own the joint because you decided to do so. You may. But you won't. Do some extensive research.

Lastly, consider what type of law you want to practice. My favorite prospect is ranked a bit below USC, but they have a far superior program for my particular area of study. That mentality may behoove you.

Good luck, I sincerely hope you prove me wrong and bring that score way up. I just felt an affinity with this post because I used to have similar dreams of "well all I gotta do is figure out how to LSAT, I kind of like this method of thinking. Maybe Michigan? ...Cal? ...UCLA?" Yeah, nah.

Feel free to inbox me, because I believe my response is well researched. Happy to offer my two cents.

Sports & Entertainment Law

Just floating this out there with no real question, per say. I'm looking into Sport Law schools, and dabbling into research on Entertainment Law schools (not mutually exclusive). Wondering if anyone else around these parts has the same idea.

Top interests right now include UGeorgia (approx 160 LSAT) and UMiami (little lower than that). Georgetown also, but that will likely be my reach school, and with a late application I'm not getting my heart set on it until I do some PTs.

Anyone else have insights/concerns about Sport & Entertainment Law schools, programs, & apps?

Application for the Fall 2016 (Test In Feb)

I'm getting concerned about timing with my apps. I'll likely take the test in Dec and again in Feb.

I really dont know much about this process, yet. If I take a Feb test, is that too late to get an app together for a few schools in time for the Fall 2016 year start times? Or is that too late, and will instead set me up to apply for 2017 start times?

Confirm action

Are you sure?
