I think it's the way of expression for E means something different from "only very old moose got eaten by the wolves". Instead, E probably is just telling us what happened to those old moose, but does not tell us what happened to the rest of the herd like young ones. I guess we can't assume younger mouse are not eaten by wolves at all by E.
I chose A at the beginning, and different from JY's explanation, I now think A is wrong because it says wolves discourage other predators from "moving in". So my understanding is that A is not saying that wolves are not stopping the predators that are "currently eating the mouse", but instead the wolves just may prevent the mouse from being eaten by future "moving in" predators. So it's not strong enough to explain why the mouse number keeps increasing.
I really dislike C for obvious reason that I don't want to assume that mentioned disease is a deadly disease. But by excluding A and E, this seems to be the only viable one....Does seem to be a little stronger than the rest...
