MBT - Conditional logic Question type

Hi Guys,

Can you please help with this question ?

Either A’s faction or B’s faction, but not both, will win control of the government. If A’s faction wins, the nation will suffer economically. If B’s faction wins, the nation will suffer militarily.

Given the statements in the passage, which one of the following statements must be true?

(A) It is possible, but not certain, that the nation will neither suffer economically nor suffer militarily.

(B) If the nation suffers economically, it is certain that A’s faction has won control of the government.

(C) It is certain that the nation will suffer either economically or militarily, and also certain that it will not suffer both.

(D) If the nation suffers militarily, it is possible, but not certain, that B’s faction has won control of the government.

(E) If the nation suffers both economically and militarily, it is certain that neither A’s faction nor B’s has won control of the government.

I tried to apply the conditional logic but still i am not able to figure it out.

AW - A's faction wins

BW - B's faction wins

NSE- Nation suffers economically

NSM- Nation suffers militarily

ST(1) : AW->/BW

BW->/AW

ST(2) : AW->NSE

/NSE->/AW

BW->NSM

/NSM->/BW

I am not able to derive D (Right AC) from this logical conditionals.

Source: Gmatclub

I hope it is rephrased correctly.

Thanks.

Thoughts while going through the ACs in MSS type questions

Hi 7Sages,

I am facing a bit difficulty in dealing with the ACs of the MSS type of questions.

I want to ask about the best way to deal with these ACs.

When you go through each of the ACs, what do you try to do just after reading it?

Do you try to find reasons as to why that AC might be wrong ie Like trying to find a flaw which might occur here? Finding a subtle flaw is bit of a problem on my part. I am lacking in that respect.

Or Do you try to support the AC and try to find possible reasons how the AC can be the conclusion supported by the premises given in the question?

Thanks and Regards :)

Thanks everyone for clarifying the doubt. I understood that 'must' and 'can' could be substituted with 'is' and the same rules follows. :)

Doubt in "If then must" condition

Hi 7Sages,

I have a confusion in representing "if then must" conditions.

Suppose there is a sentence given as :

If N is not selected then T must be selected .

So, is the representation like this?

not N -> T

contrapositive is

not T -> N

If here, N is satisfied then does the rule drops away and does T becomes a floater ?

Since there is a 'must' keyword involved..I am confused.

Please clarify this.

Thank you.

Thank you so much @ . Yes , the explanation was very helpful to clear the concept of structure in a RC passage.I will try to follow this as much as i can . :)

Hi @ thanks for your response ,

With the example of the paragraph you gave, finding the structure of a paragraph is still a sort of vague concept since it was a single paragraph .

It will be a good idea if you can help me identify the structure of PT1.S1.P2 passage.

Here, I wrote the LRS summary of the passage:

P1 : General theory thesis vs anti-thesis

P2 : Specific example Cytologists vs Biochemists over a specific issue

P3 : Cytologists and biochemists condescended each other in general.

P4 : Transformation of both the disciplines and final synthesis

P5 : Conclusion : Competition between thesis and anti-thesis is good.

Based on this, I am trying to frame the underlying structure of the passage:

P1: MP of the passage

P2: Presenting a real-time clash between disciplines

P3: Not sure!

P4: Presenting the Merger of the two disciplines...Not sure here also :(

P5: Conclusion of the passage

Pls help! @

Hi @ ,

Is this the correct structure of this passage? Could you pls review it ?

P1 : General theory thesis vs anti-thesis

P2 : Specific example Cytologists vs Biochemists over a specific issue

P3 : Cytologists and biochemists condescended each other in general.

P4 : Transformation of both the disciplines and final synthesis

P5 : Conclusion : Competition between thesis and anti-thesis is good.

@ Yes, I had gone through this CC video explanation where J.Y. explains how to make LRS. I was under the impression that reading for structure is different from making LRS. I didnt realize that they are one and the same thing. I am sorry about that confusion.

@ I understood your point well. I went through the J.Y. 's explanation again and i found i misinterpreted the explanation of the Q11 . But now my understanding is crystal clear.

Thank you so much for bring me out from the confusion :) . And I am sorry for quoting the lines directly from the PT. I will take care about this rule while asking my doubt.

@ Yes, I agree to your point. While explaining the passage , JY interpreted the 'they' as Biochemists but while explaining one of the questions eg Q 11 ,he mentioned they as cytologists.

I didn't understand that Q 11 explanation.

Thank you @ .Yes, this answered by doubt on the BR process.

I am also facing difficulty in identifying the function of a paragraph in a passage and the structure of a passage. It will be good if you can provide a video link. Writing function of a paragraph seems more like writing LRS.

Can you pls explain the difference between the LRS and function ? Can pls give an example to explain these?

PT1.S1.P2 - One scientific discipline

Hi Guys,

In the P2 , line 25-32 , I am assuming that structure means physical properties[like homogeneous,network like,granular..etc] .

Admin edit: Please review our forum rules. Posting licensed LSAC materials is against our TOS.

https://classic.7sage.com/lsat_explanations/lsat-1-section-1-passage-2-passage/

My question is why cant we think that Biochemists were not interested in structure aka physical properties of the protoplasm so they stood apart from the debate(among the biochemists) over whether protoplasm is homogeneous,network-like, granular, or foamlike .

It is another way of saying that is the debate(among biochemists) didnot happen.

Then Next line meant Biochemists' interest was in the chemical nature of the protoplasm . Why cant we say both these statements were said of Biochemists? It can happen that the biochemists had a disinterest in the physical properties[structure] of protoplasm but they wanted to study chemical characteristics of protoplasm.

Please Help me out! I am in a soup.

BRing Reading Comp passages

@Sami I am following your BR process for Reading Comp passages. I have a question regarding that BR process for RCs. During BRing, do we read the Reading comp passage and then write the high resolution summary (HRS) while referring the passage at the same time. Like reading one para then writing its HRS , then reading the next para and writing down that para's HRS. Or is it reading the passage in one go then write the whole passage's HRS from memory, I find it difficult to retain the entire passage in my mind and then write its HRS ?Should i push myself to retain the entire passage details ?

Guidance for Reading comprehension

Hi 7sage Tutors!

I have gone through the Grammar lessons in CC. I need to make sure I am reading the RC statements the right way.While reading RC, I try to figure out the subject, predicate for each of the sentences. And then try to imitate JY, the way he reads while explaining in the lesson. I do it in my mind as if I am explaining myself.

I feel this is making me thinking and get involved with the content. Comprehension has improved but it is taking more time while reading.

Will the time taken reduce after practising this way for a few more passages? And what and how to drill Reading comprehension passages?

Thanks :)

I think "which is to go down perpendicularly" is attached to "popular.">

Doubt in parsing a sentence

Hi Guys,

I am stuck in parsing a sentence. I can't understand its meaning.

Here is the passage..

The ways by which you may get money almost without exception lead downward. To have

done anything by which you earned money merely is to have been truly idle or worse. If the

laborer gets no more than the wages which his employer pays him, he is cheated, he cheats

himself. If you would get money as a writer or lecturer, you must be popular, which is to go down

perpendicularly.

This line is taken Life without principles by Henry David.

Please help.TIA.

@ Thank you for the 3 important rules which we should focus on while solving for the miscellaneous type of games.

I want to illustrate my understanding of action of game . Suppose there is a logical game based on passing and receiving of cards, so to figure out what is the action of the game we need to read the rules and try to simulate the game as much as possible(may be in a small scale) so that we get accustomed to the nuances of the rules and the game as a whole. That is one of the first few steps which we need to do properly .

Is it what you meant by action of game ?

Hello Sages,

I need your advice in logic games. For solving miscellaneous games, what should be the ideal approach? Since those games don't fall into a specified category , I don't know what the starting point should be . While practicing such games , should i spend as much time as possible (may be like 2-3 hrs) to first crack the game on my own instead of trying for 20 mins and then move on to watching the solution.My approach to solve a foreign setup should be able improve on its own as there is no specified way to deal with such games so I am trying in all possible ways to improve that . I am not sure if that is a good way to deal with foreign games. Am i trying the misc games the right way?Thanks.

Order of practising reading comp passages

Hi Sages,

I have a doubt regarding the order in which we should drill reading comprehension passages. Should we segregate easy, medium,hard passages from PT 1-35 ? Doubt in finding POV in an excerpt

Danino has expressed dissatisfaction that many genetic studies have attributed the ‘spread of agriculture’ into the subcontinent to migrations. Just to be sure that no one thinks that the practice of agriculture is in the genes, I would like to point out that the spread of the technology of agriculture was associated with the movement of people; agriculturists who took the technology to new regions and taught it to the locals in the new region. Movement of people implies movement of genes. Some migrants ‘export’ their genes to a new region by taking spouses from the new region and producing children with them who stay in the new region. We can never be sure that the attribution of agriculture having been introduced to the Indian subcontinent by migrants is fully true. However, genetic data do support this model, especially of the spread of modern, organized agriculture.

Having said this, I must also emphasize, once again, that collection of more extensive data is always more helpful in understanding our past and of the spread of our inventions and innovations. A Y-chromosomal signature, haplogroup J, was shown to be associated with the spread of modern agriculture. This signature has its highest frequency in the Fertile Crescent region – the region comprising the present-day countries of Syria, Lebanon, Turkey – where the technology of modern agriculture was invented about 7,000–10,000 years ago. Collection of deeper data showed that this signature is quite heterogeneous and is composed of at least four sub-signatures, one of which – haplogroup J2b2 – is confined to the India–Pakistan region.

This sub-signature arose over 13,000 years ago and hence its introduction into India could not have been by migrants who introduced modern agriculture into India. We showed that the haplogroup J2b2 possibly arose in India, because the highest frequency of this haplogroup is found in India. We discovered multiple epicentres of this haplogroup in India and interestingly these epicentres neatly coincided with the seats of introduction of early forms of agriculture in India (as evidenced by the study of fossilized pollen grains by Fuller and his team). It is unlikely that haplogroup J arose independently multiple times in geographically separated places. It probably arose in an ancient population who had spread themselves in geographically separated regions and they invented rudimentary forms of agriculture independently in multiple geographical regions. However, it is notable that these early forms of agriculture remained largely confined to India and Pakistan region.

Question:

Danino believed that genetic studies, which “attributed the ‘spread of agriculture’ into the Indian subcontinent to migrations,” are:

1)incorrect because migrants did not introduce agriculture into the subcontinent.

true because it was indeed migrants who introduced agriculture into the subcontinent.

only partially correct as early forms of agriculture were indigenously developed in the subcontinent.

originally results of expert intuition but later validated by an improved ability to decipher evidence.

Source : https://www.imsindia.com

Need help in finding POV!

Correct Answer is 3 .

But I find AC 1 more suitable because 1st line of passage "Danino expressed dissatisfaction....."

Hi @ ,I am caught up in a conundrum again . I am not able to stick to the time limits (10 mins) to solve the Reading comp passage. It takes more time for me to figure out Low resolution summary of each passage and Tie back .

I am in initial stage of drilling the RC passages , may be that's the reason I am taking longer than it's supposed to.If I stick to time limit then I cannot think fast enough about the Low resolution summary,tie back,predict the next and comprehend the passage well enough.If i stick to the time limit and I don't do any of these steps ,it will defeat the entire purpose of this strategy.So I skip the time limit part and focus on doing just these 4 steps.

I am taking about 20 mins now to solve a RC passage.

Do you think after drilling 20-30 PT passages (without time limits)will help me to get through this problem? If not, what should be my approach to solve this problem?
