RC / LR Blind Review Buddy

I took the August flex and didn't feel as comfortable with RC and LR as I would have liked. If anyone would like to blind review with me please message me! My LR is anywhere from -0 to -4, and RC is all over the place: -2 to -7.

If you're scoring around the same and are interested in doing a lot of RC this next month lmk!

Sorry just a question on the deadline--can we take the exam any time on October 31st? Or does it have to be before the date October 31st?

Cleaning up your LG is the fastest way to improve your score.

Also, I think your LR misses are high enough that maybe it's a specific question type you need to drill? What would you say your weaknesses are ?

Lastly, something that helped me in RC was to read a paragraph, and then highlight the main point from the paragraph only, and then move onto the next paragraph, and repeat. This is because before, I found myself highlighting random things because I thought they might show up on the questions. This detracted from my overall understanding of the passage and structure.

Rest in Peace to an Absolute Legend

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this...but upon hearing the RBG news I actually cried. A symbol of integrity, tenacity, and righteousness for all. I figured since we're all aspiring lawyers, others might be feeling the same way about her.

I read someone else say this on twitter, and found it worth reposting:

"Her rest is earned. It is our turn to fight."

Thanks endlessly to an eternal legend.

hi :)

in terms of the games comment, what has been your approach to studying? I think it's very possible for you to improve in games and increase your score!

I have picked up the logic games bible and I've been going through that, I'll do about four games every few days but to get all the questions right it takes about 12-15 minutes for me. I feel like diagramming maybe takes me a while or I feel compelled to diagram for each question so maybe I don't create enough scenarios?

Have you considered using the 7 sage curriculum for games?

I have nothing against powerscore, and found their LG and RC bibles to be extremely thorough. But the LG bible just didn't do it for me. I was able to get to -0 on games using the 7 sage foolproof method. I really really recommend it. I started out missing half the questions, but using the foolproof method, games soon became my favorite section on the exam.

Especially since you're considering November...you can definitely make vast improvements on LG by then, bumping up your score greatly :)

Sorry to hear this :( How was your anxiety going into the test? do you think it could have been a factor?

I'm sorry to hear about that---it can definitely be crushing since sometimes it seems like we give our whole lives to this test!

Did you feel very anxious on test day? Do you think it played a factor in your score?

@ --Student Service-- and @.Y., I want to submit my two essays as soon as possible today but on the application form, my first essay is 160words. But it sill shows up this message ""Please limit your response to 1000 characters, including spaces." Could you tell me how many words it will accept?

My second essay is 881 words. So it still shows up the message " Please limit your response to 5000 characters, including spaces. could you tell me how many words will be acceptable? Thanks so much!

I am neither JY nor Juliet, but just saw this comment and wanted to answer: I believe the limit is characters, not words. The 881 words you have written exceed the 5000 character limit. Same for the first essay as well---the 160 words probably exceed the 1000 character limit. The characters include spaces as well.

I hope this helps !

I believe on the Powerscore podcast they said the flex will have to change at some point, because LSAC will need to start testing experimental sections again. Not sure when it'll change back, just wanted to pass along the info

have you been following the foolproof method?

Like doing the same game over and over again? I haven’t done that but will it still be helpful if you’ve already watched the explanation video?

yes definitely, a million times yes! if you work to get your timings in the recommended time, it will benefit you greatly for games you haven't even seen yet. While the games appear different on the surface, the inferences they test you for are the same!

I just did my first section of logic games after two weeks and I still managed to go -0 thanks to hours of foolproofing (and I am by no means "good" at logic games. when i first started out, i would miss over half the questions).

And, just to add on to the games being the "same"---I took the august flex. One of the games in the section I just did was almost identical.

Foolproofing will definitely improve your score--make sure you check out J.Y.'s lesson on it.

And, when you double check your answers, it helps to verify whether you went about it in the most efficient way possible. Just getting the right answer isn't enough, it's more about the process.

Hope this helps!

Another reason I eliminated C is because it says "in a context" which doesn't limit it to radio or television talk shows. I thought using the words "in a context" were therefore too broad.

Is this reasoning correct?

You've only done 2 reading comprehension sections! don't be discouraged ! I am by no means an expert, I'm still going -2 to -5 on an RC passage. But here are some tips that may help:

You probably already know this one: exposure. RC passages have the same topic a lot of times. Already having previous knowledge of what the f they might be talking about really does help when you're confused. I really do believe RC improves with more exposure, so expect improvement in your future!

Concentration: someone mentioned this above, but using my phone less makes my concentration almost effortless. My concentration used to be really bad, and I would lose focus, which then would make me stressed, and therefore ruin my focus even more. I once even had to stop taking a PT because I was so anxious about not being able to concentrate. A couple months later and my concentration is so much improved by deleting social media, which is designed to stimulate you every few seconds. I also meditate (not just by sitting down and breathing for ten minutes, but also intently focusing on other activities in my life). Also, every night I time myself for 35 minutes reading difficult content. I know you said you disagree that you have to read the Economist, and I do not think its a necessity by any means. But reading challenging material for 35 minutes (I'm more of a Foreign Affairs kid myself) has improved my focus and is well worth it for me.

Lastly, and most importantly in my opinion is a deep and thorough BR. It almost pains me to write this because doing a BR the way I do is so time-consuming and tedious, but I think it will bring the most improvement to your score. The way I BR is: paraphrasing the passage in one paragraph, then writing down the MP, structure, and authors tone. Then I go through the questions, and for every single question I write down all the reasons the right answer is right, and all the reasons the wrong answers are wrong. THEN I take it one step further even, and try to "correct" the wrong answer: in other words, how can you "fix" the wrong answer to make it right?

This process is sooo tedious and annoying to do at times. It takes me anywhere from 1.5-3 hours to BR a single section. But I think this will improve your speed on the test in identifying correct answer choices faster.

Anyways, like I said I'm no expert. But if you're struggling with RC, maybe try these out! and feel free to message me :)

I always score higher on paper PTs than digital PTs because it's easier for me to focus and retain information when I read on paper...so I wouldn't take a PT in paper form because there's a chance it may inflate your score, even by a point or two :(

I especially think it's important to practice with the interface that you'll be using on test day so you're familiar with it and don't waste precious time trying to figure things out

@ and @.taima I don't think the previous comment by @ is correct, you can't just take it whenever you want. You must sign-up for a time slot. If you read your confirmation email, it says you will receive an email approx. 2 weeks before the test date with information on selecting a time and day to take the test. Specifically, the agreement you are required to read when registering for the LSAT says: "Reporting Time: You must report to the LSAT Test no later than the reporting time indicated on your LSAT Admission Ticket. You will not be admitted to the LSAT Test after the time set forth on your LSAT Admission Ticket. You must report to the LSAT-Flex Test no later than the time you schedule for your LSAT-Flex Test. You will not be admitted to the LSAT-Flex Test if you report to the LSAT-Flex Test more than one (1) hour after your scheduled time for the LSAT-Flex Test. LSAC will strictly enforce the reporting deadlines set forth in this provision. If you are a candidate at an international Test center, please carefully review the actual Test date, day, and reporting time printed on your LSAT Admission Ticket for the LSAT Test." YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST SCHEDULE A TIME, DO NOT SHOW UP TO TAKE THE LSAT-FLEX WHENEVER YOU FEEL LIKE IT!

I believe the previous comment was referring only to the LSAT writing portion, not the lsat flex. In which case, they were correct, because the LSAT writing is self scheduled and you can take it whenever you would like

it's hard to say, because we don't know what you will score once you finish the CC! But finishing the CC is only the first step...after that, a lot of drilling and timed PTs is usually what it takes to steadily improve your score. So, if you are aiming for your full potential, I would say you definitely wouldn't be able to achieve that for October. But that's not to say you can't get a good score, or the score you want ! But if you're shooting for your very best, I recommend not taking October or maybe even November. The higher and higher you score, the harder and harder it gets to claw for every point.

This is a question where I could see why the correct answer was correct, but it was hard for me to pinpoint a reason why each incorrect answer was wrong.

This assumption in this argument is : (If two works have a different tone, vocab, and detail-------> they are written by different authors). So we need to find an answer choice where this assumption is shown to be incorrect. That is what answer choice C does, because in C, we have an instance where (two works have different tone, vocab, and detail-----> NOT written by different authors). This directly contradicts the assumption and proves the assumption wrong.

While this was easy for me to see, articulating why each wrong answer was wrong was much more difficult.

A is incorrect because it doesn't address the underlying assumption that was stated above. All is says that there is a third set of works that differ from the Iliad and Odyssey, and this third set of works is also attributed to Homer. But how does this prove the assumption to be wrong? Maybe all three sets of works were not written by Homer at all. This answer choice doesn't harm the assumption at all.

B is incorrect because truly it is irrelevant. Why does it matter if both of the works minor copying errors and other textual corruptions? We know for a FACT that the original, unaltered works without errors and corruptions differ in tone, vocab and detail, because it was mentioned in the premise (PREMISE = FACT). This answer choice is bating you to think, "well, maybe the errors and corruptions are what made the two works differ, and in reality, the original works don't differ at all). But this would be contradicting the premise, which states the two poems greatly differ. And we can never contradict a premise in an LR question.

C is correct, because as stated earlier, it shows an instance where the assumption (two different works have different tone, vocab, and detail---> written by different authors) is incorrect. It effectively attacks the underling presumption in the argument, by saying actually, in this instance, two diff works with diff tone, vocab, detail----> SAME author.

D is incorrect, because why does it matter that each work is inconsistent within itself? How does this answer the question : Can the same author write greatly differing works? This answer choice doesn't resolve the issue of whether or not this assumption (two differing works---> two different authors) is valid.

E is incorrect because this is telling us that Homer didn't write both works (at least not by himself). So this doesn't hurt the assumption that the author has made, because the author already assumed that Homer didn't write both works. If anything, this is consistent with the authors argument, and may actually strengthen it.

Improving Focus

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone had advice for how to improve focus/attention span for long periods of time. Sometimes during PTs I find myself having to read a question 3 times to finally focus and understand what it is saying, which is a huge waste of time. I feel like it was easier to get immersed into activities when I was younger, and now my attention span is floundering!

I exercise about 4 times a week, and have started to cut back on my phone apps that might shorten my attention span (rip tik tok and twitter). Any other advice is greatly appreciated.

Some extra info: My last PT was a 167 but I'm hoping to break 170 for the August test. I'm scheduled to take 16 more PTs before my actual exam (do you think breaking 170 in this time is possible?)

thanks!

To those who score well in RC:

What does timing look like for you in a section? Not in terms of breakdown per passage, but how much time you have left over and how many questions you left yourself go back to?

My BR for RC is consistently -1 or -0, but under timed conditions it ranges (from -2 to -8). I'm trying to close this gap, since I think my BR indicates that it's a timing issue and not an understanding issue?

Thank you :)

Reminder for Writing

I'm a dummy and I forgot to take off my watch during the Writing sample and just got a notice that it was disqualified.

Since this is self-proctored I just wanted to remind everyone to take watches off! and also to show both sides of your paper since the automated proctor never prompts you to do that...

I came across this today and thought it would be a useful resource to share with others: It's a podcast giving tips on applying from the dean of admissions of Harvard and Yale. It hasn't officially started yet, but it's scheduled to start mid-August.
