I can speak to personal preference and why I test legacy, instead of modern. I have two reasons for my choice; 1. More questions to work through, familiarizing myself with more questions and question types is part of improving, especially having to blind review more questions. 2. Endurance - if I can score well having to undergo 35 more minutes of questions, I can do a shortened version of the LSAT. I view it as the same logic of running with a weighted vest so running feels easier when you're not wearing one. Hope that helps.
I would say it's necessary to understand lawgic because as passages get more complex, you need to follow an efficient system (Lawgic) to parse through the convoluted language.

I LOVE the book "Make it Stick." It completey changed my way of learning. Also mind mapping is a helpful tool for developing strong connections and developing higher order learning, which is better recalled months later.
