World Cup

Who are you supporting during the World Cup? Are you worried it will disrupt your focus?

I’m Croatian and hoping for a good showing from our national team in what is likely our golden generation’s last WC together, but I’m not too optimistic as we always find a way to bottle it.

Should Croatia be eliminated, I’ll be cheering on the teams of whatever Chelsea players remain in the tournament. Belgium definitely have a fair shout, and I fancy England to go far under Southgate.

I support/follow both the US and Israel national team. Naturally both suck at soccer so I’m rooting for England as I am a big Tottenham Hotspur fan. Go Kane!

I like Belgium just because they're a small country but their team has top tier players at every position right now. Realistically I think its going to come down to who doesn't choke and to me that seems like Germany. England and France have not looked solid to me in any recent high level showings. Spain's young talent isn't keeping up with their old talent and also I don't like Spain. Same for Italy except I like Italy. Brasil got Brasil-ed last time out. I think I'll be rooting for Columbia though.

Definitely my favorite part about the world cup is watching some relatively unknown player shine and then get offered a big contract, like James Rodriguez last Cup.

what do you mean by "golden generation?" I live in the US, thus our "golden generation" was the one that fought in WW2.

  • edited June 2018 439 karma

@"Jonah Chadwick Griego" I thought they were the "greatest generation"

golden generation just means there were a lot of high caliber players born in the same generation

    Well...Never mind.
I am a Messi fan, so I support Argentina.
I would say Group D is a very dangerous. Argentina have some superstars (and a lot of Messi fans) but Croatia have a more balanced team. And Iceland... we know what they can do from lsat UEFA Euro.

@BinghamtonDave Assumes without giving justification that what was true in a previous case(confederations cup) will be true for the current one(world cup)??

Confusing probability with certainty: Anna Kondratyeva, the Hermitage's veterinarian, later said that Achilles “loves his motherland and couldn’t vote otherwise.” -- Just because he loves the motherland doesn't mean he has to vote for it.

Could also be - appealing to authority outside area of expertise - the area of expertise being the confederations cup... on the other hand maybe not. I'm not a big soccer fan but if the confederations cup is a soccer tournament then this is wrong.

Well, normally I would side with heritage and go with the Netherlands, but since they're not in it this time, that roughly 6% of me that's German feels pretty patriotic these days.

As I mentioned- huge fan of the club. Great manager- players with character. If levy gives Poch Monday- watch out.

@"carlos.raiz23" talented side with a brilliant manager who nevertheless fails to win trophies because of their lack of mettle.

I'll be interested to see how revenue from their new stadium affects their internal structure and possible transfer dealings. At the moment, I think retaining all their current stars in the existing wage structure is untenable and Levy knows that.

Kane just got quite a sizeable bump in pay (reportedly making upwards of 200,000 pounds a week), but I understand from a friend who knows someone who spoke to his dad, that staying in North London was never in doubt.

It's the other players like Dele, Son, Rose, Alderweireld and others of the same ilk whose allegiances will be tested by big money offers to change clubs. We already saw Walker leave for City last year, I think the exodus could continue, especially with the players knowing they're not being paid in accordance with their skills.

But yeah, I hate Tottenham, especially after the 2016 match at the Bridge where they bottled it and should have had half their team sent off. That Dembele only got a 6 match ban for gouging Costa's eyes is inexcusable to me, the penalty would have so much worse if the aggressor had been Costa. Tottenham and Liverpool are media darlings for no reason, they don't win anything or get results when it matters.

Mexico! And, yes, it is distracting! I pick and choose my games to watch or I'll do lighter LSAT studying while a game is on. Some people recommend studying in a distracting environment because you'll never know what test day will be like. I've been doing some test review while the game is on the other room.

I don't usually keep track of soccer, so I will be a bandwagon fan and support Germany. I'm curious to see how far Brazil will go though, especially given its last match against Germany. I remember watching it. Connection was lost for several minutes after the first 20 minutes or so. When it came back on I thought I was watching the wrong channel, because the scoreboard was showing a score discrepancy which I thought was possible for a sport like baseball, not soccer (and a World Cup match, no less).

Speaking of the World Cup, Iceland's team is performing quite fantastically for what I believe is its first participation.

I believe the old majors are falling and new ones are rising, it’ll be an Iceland v Russia finish, with Putin coming down on a helicopter forcing the game into penalties but then Thor interrupts the decisive kick giving Iceland the game.

I am just hoping for really exciting games all around (that Portugal vs. Spain game was fantastic) in order to heal the daily heartbreak of not seeing the US there. Having the WC in 2026 has made this WC a little less despairing, as well.

In terms of a specific team, I'm rooting hard for Argentina. My confidence in them is pretty shaken after the Iceland game. Messi has had such a rough time with the national team in big tournaments and constantly lives in Maradona's shadow for that reason. So although I don't really think it will happen I would love to see Argentina win the final, something like 7-1 over Brazil.

Here's one of the reasons I don't even dream about stepping into a casino, even when I'm at Vegas (which is physically impossible given almost any hotel's layout, but you know what I mean). I totally did not see that coming.
