Optional diversity statement

Hello,

I'm applying to York University which has a Part B to discuss diversity and equity factors. I'm curious to understand how "optional" are these optional statements? Is this something encouraged or would it hurt my chances if I don't choose to write one?

Thanks!

I think if you are diverse, you should write it! Do not write it just to check a box

The advice I see a lot is if your diversity statement feels forced then that is a negative and theyd rather you have not written one. But it is also not the "trauma Olympics", so just because you are not URM or have childhood trauma does not exclude you. If you can write well about how you would bring a unique perspective to their law school classroom then it might be worth writing one.
