    Hi there - one thing to lean on is pattern recognition. Whenever the author mentions external viewpoints, it is always for the sake of advancing their own argument. Moreover, seeing the word "But" is an argument indicator so you could have solved it that way. But since in this case the MC is referential it's important to focus on the first point, the use of an external viewpoint.

    "Some extremist claim that all language is metaphorical" The author is using this as a steppingstone to their own argument. "But this cannot be so" "This" being what the extremist claim: that all language is metaphorical. The author's argument is the negation of the extremist's argument: Answer A) it is not the case that all language is metaphorical. Answer C is actually the major premise of the author's argument - it supports the argument, but its not the argument.
