Can someone please explain question 5?

How I interpreted the question was the minimum number of salaries would be 8 not 7. The reason for this was that K would always be first, thus leading the other 8 workers being placed in the remaining spots.

There are 7 lawyers that have absolutely preset "more/less" relationships with each other (K-I-F-M-G-J-H). Therefore the minimum number of distinct salaries has to be 7. The other two (L and N) have to be distinct among themselves (L-N), but each of them can be equal to somebody other than K from the other "branch". They don't have to be equal (the maximum number of distinct salaries is 9), but they can be. The other 7 guys have to be all distinct.

can we say that L and N can tie with any of the others except K because the rules dont specifiy "no ties" ?

L and N can each tie with I, F, M, G, J ,and H. The only rule for L and N is K - L - N.
