Hi all, for schools like U Mich (where there’s no specific separate scholarship application process), how does the Darrow or other merit aid work if you are admitted in Jan or Feb? Thanks
Comments
All admitted applicants are considered automatically for a Darrow Scholarship. So there's no separate app to fill out. They interview potential candidates beginning in January.
Is this kind of $ the reason ppl are encouraged to apply early (ie if you’re admitted in Mar, it’s possible the Darrow $ will be already doled out by then)?
It's part of the reason. Applying early is usually always best for scholarships but the Darrow is almost always given to those with the best stats. So it always becomes a calculus of weighing the advantages of applying earlier vs. taking the LSAT later/again and netting a higher score.
It is part of the reason although these scholarships can be given out fairly late in the process. Once some of the people initially given the Darrow turn it down, it will be offered to new people since they want about the same number of people to attend with it every year. So you stand an okay chance even a little later as places like Harvard start to admit people who were awarded the Darrow.
The other important reason for candidates with high numbers to apply early is to avoid yield protection. If U of M is not convinced of your desire to attend, they may waitlist you instead of accepting you. Applying early helps to convince them of your interest.
Usually if you have really good numbers and they let you in rather than waitlisting you, you wind up getting a decent merit aid package whether or not you actually get the Darrow.
