  So this is one of those questions where you're directly going after the conclusion, which is something that's usually discouraged. However, it's acceptable in this instance because our main goal is to answer the question. To do that, you need to pick the best answer choice, regardless of how we feel about it. In that regard, D is the best option since our goal is to weaken the argument. The conclusion says that carpet companies will be able to gain market share only by buying out their competitors. Basically, the conclusion claims that there is only one way to increase market share. However, if there is an alternative method of gaining market share, then that would severely weaken that claim. C doesn't work because a decline in profits doesn't necessarily mean that the market share didn't increase. They could very well have gained a larger market share without increasing their profits.
