It doesn't hurt to send some "feeler emails" to prospective profs. If they say that they are not able to write you a _strong_ recommendation, then go with the pro letters.
I am a few months shy of 27. Its been stressing me out that I'm going to apply for 2019 and that so far I have done less in my life than I wanted to at this point... But I am trying to put that behind me. So here is to not letting age matter.
My vote is take the Feb and apply. If you don't get in reapply early for 2019. Sitting for December while you're only on invalid arguments is really pushing it.
