American University Washington College of Law
Application requirements
The Committee on Admissions requires applicants to submit a personal statement with the application. Your personal statement is your opportunity to tell us about your experiences as an individual; your background; your achievements; and other factors you want us to consider in evaluating you for admission. This statement may be a maximum of 3 pages double-spaced and must be electronically attached.
(Optional) You may attach a separate statement explaining how your personal circumstances are of special relevance to this application and/or to your contributions to the law school community. Applicants may ground their discussion in experiences based on race, socio-economics, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and/or any other experiences that you deem relevant.
Responses, and admissions decisions, are evaluated holistically and based on individual experiences (and any other neutral criteria that is applicable) and without regard to race, sex or other protected characteristics in accordance with applicable federal and local law.
If you wish to include a brief addendum regarding information not already addressed in other application materials, please attach it here.
Please attach a resume that may include the following items:
Employment, awards, honors and scholarships (including those received in college), extracurricular activities, leadership roles, and accomplishments.
Please read this carefully; your application will not be reviewed if left unanswered. Reporting responsibility to state bars mandates that you fully and completely answer the following questions. If you answer "yes" to any of the following questions, please attach electronically a detailed explanation. The obligation to provide truthful, accurate, and complete information is a continuing one, which requires you to notify the law school of any changes in your answers to any part of this application that occur after the date of the application submission. Any ambiguity in the questions below should be addressed by contacting the Office of Admissions.
In addition to a bar examination, there are character, fitness, and other qualifications for admission to the bar in every U.S. jurisdiction. Applicants are encouraged to determine the requirements for any jurisdiction in which they intend to seek admission by contacting the jurisdiction. Addresses for all relevant agencies are available through the National Conference of Bar Examiners.
