Admission Process
Columbia’s application process is fairly lowkey. Unlike some other top schools, its admissions office is rarely in the spotlight. It makes sensible, obvious admissions decisions, balancing impact on medians with a search for firm-ready candidates who have proven their professionalism.

Essay prompts
What's actually different about Columbia's application
- They ask about Why CLS in the PS prompt, and they want a little of it. We recommend extending your two-pager to include 2-4 Why Columbia sentences. It’s okay to go a bit onto the third page to do so, if needed.
- You’ll submit one 500-word optional essay. The big choice is between a Why CLS or a more perspective-statement prompt. Because they’ll get some Why CLS in the PS, the perspective statement is the more obvious choice. There’s only so much you can say about why you want to go to Columbia—almost everyone has the same, obvious reason.
- They ask for ‘fun facts’ on the application form. And they actually want ‘fun’ facts—don’t use it as an opportunity to brag or restate your resume. Traditionally the dean shares some of these fun facts in the welcoming speech, so if you want to over-think it, play for laughs.
