How to get into University of Victoria
Your personal statement must have 2 parts:
Part A - Narrative format Write a personal statement (up to 750 words) about why you want to study at UVic Law and what would make you a good fit. This should include your background, experiences and personal qualities.
We look for statements that are authentic, intentional and purposeful, such as: who are you? why law? why UVic? what do you bring to the community and environment at UVic law, and beyond?
JD/JID personal statement: describe your connection to and/or involvement in an Indigenous community reasons why you want to pursue the program how you will enrich the learning environment at the faculty
Part B - Outline format In outline form, list any academic, work, extracurricular or community experiences, achievements and accolades—i.e. summarize what you did, evaluate what you learned and reflect on its applicability to law school/your future—that you’d like the admissions committee to know.
Please simplify language as much as possible. Spell out acronyms, detail definitions and help us understand your lived experience in plain language.
Your personal statement (especially Part A and B), along with your academic record and LSAT score, will be used to assess entrance scholarship eligibility.
Inclusive stream applicants must submit an Inclusive admission statement along with their personal statement. It should clearly explain how challenges affected your GPA or LSAT and why you're applying through this stream.
Applicants are asked to provide evidence of barriers that may have negatively affected their GPA and/or LSAT performance. This is to ensure equitable access for candidates who have faced systemic or personal challenges. Those with a competitive GPA and a high LSAT score should apply through the first-year admission stream.
The statement should highlight:
how you've responded to these experiences how it has shaped your skills and growth how it has prepared you to succeed in law school You should show how your experiences will enrich the UVic Law community and contribute to the legal profession. The statement should be clear, well-organized and convincing, showing strong writing, reasoning and readiness for law school.
Your Indigenous admission statement is your opportunity to share your voice and experiences. There's no set format—you could speak about your connection to the Indigenous community (or lack thereof), your strengths, goals, reasons for applying and anything else you wish to highlight.
All application info is confidential and shared only with admissions and academic staff. If admitted, your file may be used to support your studies. Please remove any sensitive personal details.
While no word limit, we recommend 1-3 pages. We value concise language in our review.
Your Black admission statement is your opportunity to share your voice and experiences. There's no set format—you could speak about your connection to the Black community, your strengths, goals, reasons for applying and anything else you wish to highlight.
All application info is confidential and shared only with admissions and academic staff. If admitted, your file may be used to support your studies. Please remove any sensitive personal details.

We understand that applying through the Inclusive admission stream may involve sharing personal or traumatic experiences, which can be difficult. While supporting documents are helpful, we recognize some may be sensitive, hard to obtain or potentially retraumatizing. Use your judgment when deciding what to include, and let us know if certain documents are inappropriate or unavailable.
Avoid submitting graphic or highly confidential materials unless necessary. If you haven’t met the usual academic unit requirement, include a brief (max. 500 words) explanation of why that’s not feasible. Please remove sensitive personal details (e.g., SIN, banking info).
