I recently got a 172 on the august lsat, but I feel like my odds for a t14 are too low. Do you think it would be worth taking again for a 174+ or is it overkill?

have not taken the LSAT yet, but I'd say so. LSAT medians are rising everywhere, 172 now is no longer as competitive as it was 5 years ago. I heard somewhere that there might be ~30 schools this year with a median of 170 after this cycle.
hell no. you can always go lower than go higher. focus on the rest of your admissions materials, unless youre genuinely aiming for HYS
