http://classic.7sage.com/lsat_explanations/lsat-49-section-2-question-12/

Just wondered if anyone could provide some insight into how they approached this question.

I fell for the trap presented in E, I took "interest rate hikes generally will be perceived as needlessly restraining a growing economy" to be a sub conclusion. After watching the video explanation, I see how each premise supports the main conclusion as detailed in the final sentence of the stimulus. I then waffled between C and E because I felt that the fragment in question supported both the sub conclusion and the main conclusion, by way of the sub conclusion.

Does anyone have another way of explaining why the argument structure supports only the main conclusion, the last sentence? Also, is "accordingly" a indicator that is seen regularly?

Manhattan Prep RC Strategy Guide

I was wondering if anyone was willing to share their experience with Manhattan Prep's materials, specifically their Reading Comprehension Strategy Guide. A little background, I have worked my way through the 7sage curriculum, the LSAT Trainer and am currently drilling using the Cambridge Packets, 1-38. All of those things have been wonderfully helpful. I am now PTing regularly and am scoring between 166-171. RC is my most variable section and I am wondering if their guide can help me with consistency. I have read elsewhere (TLS) that Manhattan Prep's materials are good for those approaching the 170's.

Also, a specific question for anyone that has used the book, which PTs are the passages pulled from? Are they newer than 38? I want to make sure that I don't "contaminate" a PT that I haven't taken fully-timed. I can't seem to find a straight answer to that question on their website, their online forum or from their customer service reps. Thanks!

PT57 Difficulty?

Some background- I have been stuck around the same score (+/- 2 points) for quite a while. I took 57 recently and saw a drastic jump in my score. I really want to feel happy as this is the first time I've done this well. I've changed things up a bit in terms of the way I BR, drill, etc. I am, however, concerned that it was a fluke/serious outlier. Full disclosure: I won't be able to take another full PT for a few days and am eager to know if this legit! That's what led to this post.

It looks like one of the BR groups is taking the PT this week. If anyone is willing to share their general impressions of this PT, I would really appreciate it. Difficulty relative to other tests, section to section, etc. I've had a hard time nailing down (even in BR) what exactly I'm struggling with since the type varies quite a bit.

Thanks!

While I don't agree with you on the necessity of a math section, you make some good points. What do you think about the difficulty of the GRE relative to the LSAT? I've taught/tutored both and can tell you that the GRE is nearly universally regarded as the easier of the two tests. Just curious.

If you're willing to trade personal or diversity statements with other 7Sagers, please comment below. Once we have some interested parties, we can PM each other and offer constructive comments. Good luck to everyone preparing applications for this cycle!

P.S. I'm interested in swapping. PM me your statements!

The "odd level of abstraction" is exactly what makes the game section valuable. If you think that the practice of law doesn't include dealing with concepts in abstraction, you're sorely mistaken.

As for the LSAT correlating poorly with grades, where's the support for this? Genuinely curious as the only study I've ever seen published was one that seemed to support a correlation (although admittedly it was put out by LSAC).

Two examples (tax law and billing) just aren't enough to justify a change to a math section, at least in my mind. Why test something that applies to such a narrow field (math) when you could test something that applies to literally every specialization (analytical reasoning presented in abstract terms)?

I've searched and couldn't seem to find this answered elsewhere. Feel free to link me to another thread if one already exists on this topic.

I am aware this will all be anecodotal information and will vary greatly from person to person but I'd still like to know, what do you all consider to be a "normal" difference in score between an actual (timed) PT score and a BR score? I am trying desperately to score consistently in the low to mid 170's. My last few PTs have been in the 163-165 range but my BR scores are consistently 174 and above. While I am happy to be able to do well when I review, it is frustrating to see a ~10 point difference between the two scores. I keep thinking that eventually my actual scores will move closer to my BR scores but so far that hasn't happened.

Any tips on what can be done to close the gap? I've worked my way through the curriculum, have done some drilling with the Cambridge Packets and am currently working my way through the LSAT Trainer. Any advice or information you'd like to share would be appreciated. Thanks!

I just wanted to hear other people's thoughts on this question. It just felt totally weird to me, it seemed like the correct answer choice was inconsequential compared to the central disagreement, which I *incorrectly* assumed was damaging to the environment vs. not damaging.

Jolene appears to be taking issue with Alex's premise rather than the conclusion or the argument itself. Thoughts?

I should qualify that last statement. Any law school worth its salt will be slow to change, the diploma mills are a different story.

@ If this change occurs, it will occur at a glacial pace. I'm looking now to see how long it took business schools to switch from GMAT to GRE but I wouldn't expect drastic change any time in the next year or two.

Just my 2 cents. I believe that the LSAT is an effective test and I do not see the benefit of setting a lower standard for entrance into law school.

A study that includes 78 current and former Arizona Law students is hardly enough to establish that the GRE is "just as effective a measure" as the LSAT.

Secondly, I strongly disagree with the idea that LG should be replaced with a math section. LG exists to test students' analytical reasoning skills. Who's to say that a math section would be a better measure of those skills? If anything, a math section would move us further away from the actual skills required for success in law school.

Not to mention, utilizing a math section would likely discourage applicants rather than encourage them (not sure why we're trying to encourage applicants but that's a question for another time). Have you ever looked into studies that identify gender biases that exist among teachers of young students particularly as they relate to math? Utilizing the GRE as a barrier to law school admission *could* create the type of unequal distribution of the genders that we see in the STEM fields.

Even if the end goal is attracting more students to the legal profession, I'm not sure that the GRE would achieve that goal. Yes, many more students take the GRE but it's also accepted by a vast number of graduate programs.

My apologies if this has already been answered elsewhere.

How are the games organized in the LG Bundle? Chronologically? By type?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Necessary.

I was just curious about everyone's study techniques. My work schedule has recently changed (I'm currently a teacher and we're out of school here) and I am now able to devote the majority of my day to LSAT prep. Before the change, I was working primarily in the early mornings and in the evenings and didn't necessarily have long enough chunks of time available to become overworked, unfocused, etc. Now that I have 8/9/unlimited hours a day to study, I find that I am eager to get a lot done but definitely start to see diminishing returns toward the end of longer study sessions.

What do you all do to maximize effective study time and minimize "zombie" brain? Anyone a staunch advocate for the Pomodoro Technique? Anything else I should consider?

Thanks!

Use myLSN to get at least an idea of where you stand with scholarship money or post your stats (GPA and LSAT) so we can help.

Are you above median? Above their 75th percentile?

I would not recommend that anyone pay sticker.

Good news: the remainder of the test was pretty straight forward. Have you ever tried predicting your score before? Have you even been very accurate? I haven't. Take your last 5 PTs, average them and that's your score (+/- 3).

Try not to worry too much. You've complete the test and that's an accomplishment in itself.

Text Message?

Has anyone ever received a text message as part of the recruiting process? I've recently gained admission to a top law school with a scholarship offer. Today I received a text message from someone at the law school.

I'm really just curious as I've never seen this mentioned anywhere.

http://classic.7sage.com/lsat_explanations/lsat-68-section-4-game-4/

I'm having some serious trouble with this game. Any thoughts/suggestions? I've done other sequencing games with conditional rules, of course, but nothing as open ended as this one. Can anyone think of any similar games?

I've taken a pretty substantial LSAT break and it could just be that I'm a bit rusty but I'm having trouble nailing this one down even after a few repetitions (not typical for me).

Thanks in advance!

Applications Timeline (?) Question

Hopefully someone who is far more organized than I am right now can answer this.

Call me short-sighted but I have studying like a mental patient for the LSAT since last December and have researched prospective law schools. I have a very general idea of when I would like to submit applications but that's about it.

Question- What the heck do I do know? I felt pretty good about the test (hopefully I didn't just jinx it, lol) but am open to retaking in October if I fall short of my PT average or if I just feel like it.

What's the first thing you would start working on post-LSAT? I have not done any work on any statements, etc. It's been all LSAT, all the time. Letters of recommendation first? I know people are generally slow. Nothing until scores? Study some more for possible retake? Old habits die hard after all..

Thanks!

Evaluator?

Hey, folks,

I'm working on getting my application materials in anticipation of my October retake score and I've run across something on LSAC's website that I am not familiar with.

Can anybody give me more information about this "evaluator" business? It looks like you have the option to designate references as either recommenders, evaluators or both and that the evaluator option includes some sort of questionnaire.

I know that requirements vary but are these evaluations generally requested by schools? Should they be submitted even if not required by the law school?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Do you know, @Pacifico ? You're generally our admissions expert.

Real Talk

When you register with LSAC please, for the love of all that is good in this world, select NO when you're asked if law schools can contact you.

Otherwise, your inbox will be positively filled with the equivalent of desperate, drunk texts from a lonely ex. I swear I got one last night that read exactly like this...

"PLEASE! It's not too late! We'll still take you! It's June but we still need you.... Please?"

You think I'm kidding but let me assure you, I ain't kidding.

In all seriousness, good luck to everybody on Monday. Go, fight, win. Do the thing.

180 Watch Issue

Has anyone had an issue with the 180 Watch resetting too early? This happened to me during Saturday's administration of the test. After it reached 30 minutes, i.e. in the final 5 minutes when I needed it most, it reset back to 0 and stopped. I had a backup watch packed so it wasn't a big issue but it did distract me a bit in the first two sections.

My watch was always been a little finicky. I'm really hoping it's a matter of calibration and that I won't have to replace it. Please let me know if you have had a similar issue.

http://classic.7sage.com/lsat_explanations/lsat-72-section-3-question-07/

I've struggled with the newer (70+ ish) LR sections far more than I used to struggle with older tests. I have been pretty close to freaking out as of late because while I used to be able to count on LR to be "near perfect," my section scores in LR have been fluctuating wildly in the newer sections and I couldn't figure out what was causing the change.

Today while reviewing, I came to the realization that I couldn't really rely on my intuitive sense of the argument structure any longer. The arguments seem more convoluted, OPAs are mentioned initially in an attempt to confuse the situation (case in point, PT72, Section 3, Question 7... seriously, wtf).

After realizing this, I returned to my old method of clearly labeling the premises and conclusions in each stimulus and that *seems* to be helping. It has also helped me slow down a bit and I seem to have fewer reading errors. I've found myself relying more on the old grammar/indicator lessons (I should probably review those again in a bit).

I just wanted to share and find out if anyone else had discovered/thought anything similar. I suppose if you're nose for structure is already strong then you may be less likely to notice any change at all. LR in the mid-40's to late 60's was getting a bit formulaic, in my opinion, so I'm not really surprised to see this shift. They've gotta keep us on our toes after all.

Happy studying!

Correlation v. association?

Can someone please explain the difference between these two concepts? I'd guess that association is generally weaker than correlation, but is there some hard and fast rule that separates the two concept? Is correlation always linear? I feel like I've heard the phrase, "non-linear correlation" ...

I'm not sure the specifics really matter, I'm just asking for my own edification. I'm reviewing PT69, S1, Q24 if that makes any difference.

Thanks!

A Means to an End

Hello all,

Now that I've had a little bit of time to reflect on my June score, I was hoping to find some people to indulge with me in some "philosophical" conversation about what it all means.

I scored a 164 on the June test, 7 ish points lower than my PT average. I completely bombed one LR section (pretty uncommon since LR is generally my strongest) and did really pretty well on the remainder. It was the first section and presumably, the issue was related to nerves.

I want desperately for my LSAT score to begin with 17..and I'm not really sure why. My pride? A personal goal?

I plan to attend a (fairly) strong regional school because I know where I want to practice and already own a house in the area, I am not really a non-traditional student but am definitely not K-JD. I will apply to other schools but primarily for scholarship leverage. For this particular school and considering my URM status, my numbers (or lower) have led to admission plus substantial scholarship for others.

I plan to retake but... I'm also conflicted. Others in the area would likely take the score and run. I'm not happy with my score and know that I can do better (I haven't score a 164 on a prep test in a long while).

My question- has anyone else become obsessed with the LSAT itself and lost sight of the fact that it's a means to an end? I certainly have. Thoughts?

Unusual Games

Good morning, all-

I saw someone mention somewhere on the forum (can't seem to find it now) about unusual games making a reappearance and I'm trying to make sure I've been exposed to everything. You'll have to excuse my ignorance, when you all say "subzones," does that mean PT67, Game 4 specifically or what JY would call subcategories? I looked it up and saw that PT67 mentioned subzones specifically so I took and BR'd that one.

Other "weird" games I can think of off hand are circular, mapping (like the Zephyr airline one, right?) and pattern games. Are there any other weird types that I'm missing?

Hope everyone's studying is going well!
