This is my first time with an RRE question. I got the correct answer (D) after having to think for several minutes.
First, I realized that this a comparison between zappers and birds/sprays.
Secondly, I realized the author was not trying to convince me that birds/sprayers are better, but that, zappers were bad for X reason, and that we should use a different alternative regardless of how much better or worse it would be in comparison to zappers.
“If most people don’t believe in magic powers, that’s a good reason to think magic powers aren’t real.
Waller’s Point of View:
Waller basically says:
“If magic powers were real, people would see them and believe in them. And if people don’t believe in them, then they probably aren’t real.”
In other words, Waller thinks that if most people don’t believe in ESP (magic powers), it’s because ESP isn’t real. So, Waller agrees with (D).
Chin’s Point of View:
Chin says:
“People don’t believe in magic powers because important people (the cultural elite) are close-minded and don’t believe in them. Those important people influence what the news says, and the news influences what regular people believe.”
So, Chin is saying that public opinion isn’t about whether magic powers are real; it’s about who has the loudest voice. He thinks that people’s opinions are shaped by the media and not by whether ESP is real or not.
Therefore, Chin disagrees with (D) because he thinks public belief doesn’t prove or disprove ESP’s existence.
Why is (D) the right answer?
Because Waller thinks public belief is good evidence (he thinks: no belief = not real), but Chin thinks public belief isn’t good evidence (he thinks: no belief = influenced by the media, not necessarily not real).
And that’s the disagreement! They don’t see eye to eye on whether public belief tells us anything about whether ESP is real.
For question 5, isn't "Business has an interest in enabling employees to care for children" a subconclusion, ultimately supporting the main conclusion, "businesses should adopt policies, such as day care benefits, that facilitate parenting?"
