The author is appealing to a centuries old belief in order to frame the argument that scientist's may be mistaken about the health benefits of moderate wine consumption? What? The phrase doesn't seem to in any way frame the rest of the passage, it doesn't contribute at all to the author's conclusion that scientists have overlooked the potential benefits of moderate wine drinking. It just sort of seems like a random fun-fact.
