@Stas1973 that's a good point, the stimulus doesn't tell us when the sediments were deposited, so that makes it harder to support (B)'s claim that the sediments deposited toward the end of the ice age contained the cold beetle fragments and pollen grains.
It's easy to assume this since the stimulus is talking about determining the approximate end point of the ice age, but we aren't told specifically from what point in the ice age the sediments were deposited.
AC (E) doesn't mention anything about when the sediments were deposited and instead just talks about the "toward the end of the ice age" which is easier to support.
Thanks for the reply!
I'm still having trouble understanding why AC (B) is incorrect. The stimulus says: "The second date was established by testing pollen grains in those same samples" – wouldn't this mean that those same samples would contain all three materials that were tested (insect fragments containing warmth-adapted open-ground beetles AND cold-adapted arctic beetles AND pollen grains??).
I'm imagining it like this: the researchers scooped up a big pile of dirt, with rocks, as JY says. From the specific phrasing of "those same samples" how does this not mean that they found all of the material together? What is the point of saying "same samples" if those that contain cold beetles can't be expected to contain spruce-pollen and even hot beetles for that matter? What does same samples mean here specifically?
I got (E) in BR before even watching the explanation and understand why it's the best answer but I feel that neither JY's video nor the analysis / discussion etc is helping me understand this point about the same samples. #help
Narrowed it down to A and C, then detected the trap in A and eliminated thankfully! The text search box is a lifesaver
