I'm still unclear why "only" and "the only" would indicate different things.

If I say, "The only reason I am going to the party is because Nelson will be there." versus " I am only going to the party because Nelson will be there."

What is the difference? Why would one sentence indicate a sufficient conditional and the other imply a necessary conditional?
