Did you apply to Davis or UCI? Maybe those could be used to negotiate

I dont think it could hurt to send an LOCI if it's been a couple months since you applied

No, I didn't apply to either Davis or UCI, unfortunately.

LOCI for pending application?

Hey all!

So I got my scholarship offer from UCLA, but feel that I can't begin negotiating with them until I have my (hopefully) acceptance + scholarship from USC, since that is a closely ranked school + in the same area.

I have generous offers from WUSTL and Loyola (and ASU and GW), though I'm not sure UCLA would be interested in competing with either of those schools due to lesser rank (Loyola) and different location (WUSTL).

I have 2 questions - first, how long is too long to wait to respond to UCLA's offer and begin negotiating? Should I just jump in with the offers from other schools and see if they bite? If they don't care to compete with what I currently have, can I open the conversation up again as soon as I get my USC info?

Second - I'm fairly certain I have the numbers and credentials to get into USC and get some money. Is it okay to write a LOCI for a school where your application is still pending? Or is that just reserved for waitlist decisions?

Thanks!!

I thought Section 2 LR #17 about corrections to research findings was difficult, though that was the point in the test where I started to freak out and wasn't thinking clearly. I do think this stimulus was weirdly worded though.

I'm not sure how to reply so that everyone will be notified but, how about Tuesday evenings from 8:30pm EST until whenever (or 8pm), and depending on how many can make it, we each bring 2-3 LR questions we'd like to review, and 1 LG? If we can decide on what we each want to discuss beforehand, we can start an email to make sure we have images of the questions/games that we will discuss.

Online study buddies?

I live near Buffalo, NY and have had difficulty finding in-person study buddies. I'm taking PTs 52-61 and 29-38 in prep for December, and have already taken basically all of the most recent tests (from 2011-2017), and would love to chat via Skype or Blue Jeans or GoToMeeting with anyone who just wants to talk through LR and LG, which I find really helpful. So far my cats and family have lent their ears to me but it's different because they're not invested in the same way.

I'm free weekday evenings 8pm EST until midnight!

I seem to be paralyzed when it comes to timed tests and am wondering if changing my approach might help. I have now taken 4 practice tests and scored roughly the same on all of them - a 154 and 3 152s. Now, my Blind Review scores are 162-166, so I know I can do much better, but seem to get tripped up by the time. In my job, I preach following the procedure untimed to reproduce it accurately and confidently, then speed comes with practice. I wonder if it would make sense here as well to go through the full test a few times untimed, but monitoring where I am at specific points, to get used to the process before diving right into timed PTs immediately after finishing the curriculum. How have others approached this? I'm scheduled to take the December test and want to make the best use of my time to maximize my potential. Thanks in advance.

Facing the time is something you must do in order to get over the fear. I used to practice by myself in the library and time myself, but was forgiving if I went over by 30 seconds or so. Then I had a friend proctor me, and cut me off at exactly 35 minutes, and it was a totally different feeling - at first it tripped me up and there were moments I couldn't even focus because I was worried I was running out of time. But then I got used to the pressure and can now finish each section with a few minutes to spare. Of course you shouldn't be rushing through questions you don't understand. I started out with a 156 (taking 6 hours to finish the test), and got a 167 in September (have been getting in the 170s on my PTs now - I'm taking again in December). The confidence that comes with knowing you can finish in time I think greatly improved my accuracy. I spent most of my time going slowly through LR and LG, and I take about 1-2 PTs per week.

> What are people's thoughts/preferences on bubbling? Do you bubble as you go or at the end of each section? Also is it safe to roughly fill in the bubbles(by roughly, I mean a quick dark scribble), I have this paranoia of having my answer sheet misread, so I find myself wasting a lot of time filling in the circle "properly"..

I actually bubble after each individual LR question, as it gives me the tiniest break to re-gather my thoughts for the next question, and then I never have to worry about going back. For LG and RC, I bubble at the end of each game/passage. I'm usually pretty anal when it comes to filling in the entire bubble. On the Sept. 2017 exam, I did change 1 of my answers and completely erased the bubble I had filled in, and while I was still credited for the right answer, the scan of my answer sheet shows both bubbles filled in! The wrong answer I had erased was just much lighter. Kind of freaked me out. :-)

Thanks everyone! I've pulled out all the stops with a certain T20 school. They're my #1 choice and I have nearly a 1/2 tuition scholarship from them, but with living expenses + the rest of tuition, I'm looking at significant significant significant loans. They told me they are overcommitted and can't do anything more for me (in addition to speaking on the phone with the dean of admissions I've met with him twice). Even though I have a higher offer from a better school, he went about explaining to me how that school is more expensive so I'm still getting a better deal with my current scholarship. lol

Anyone else taking out a terrifying amount of loans and crossing their fingers for biglaw?

Not to rain on your parade, but the weather in LA is pretty brutal. Nowhere near as pleasant as buffalo, ??

lol I know, falling on my icy steps 5 times this winter has definitely made me reconsider my west-coast ambitions.

Congratulations! Is that your top choice?

Yep! I mean, I applied to higher ranked schools, but the vibe of UCLA and location are things I'm weighing almost as heavily as rank.

UCLA acceptance!!!

I'm visiting LA from Buffalo and was driving to UCLA for a tour & class visit yesterday morning, when the Dean called to inform me of my acceptance!

Happy to DM you my stats.

Grateful for this community that has helped put everything into perspective and provided so much support over the last several months. :-)

Hi! Any advice/opinions on letting a school know the dollar amount that would enable you to commit to that school? Is this considered rude/pushy? Are we supposed to simply ask for any kind of increase and just be grateful to get any money at all, or can we be more direct in negotiating?

Thanks!

@ hi there! I just purchased prep tests 52-61 - will any of these be included in the review sessions leading up to the December test? Thanks!

3.58 & 167 - should I retake for UCLA/USC?

Hi there! My GPA is 3.58 and my Sept. 2017 score is 167. I wanted to submit my application earlier than December, but it seems that my chances for UCLA and USC are below 50% with these numbers (and probably $0 scholarship if I did get in). I have 8 years of work experience in the legal field. Should I start studying again? Thanks!!

How do you guys remember all this crap? lol, I can remember the RC passages and 2 LG. No specific questions other than 1 in LR that really tripped me up. How do you do it? Everything was such a blur.

I only really remember the ones that tripped me up.

Does anyone remember an LR question about people saying "I am in pain"?

hmm.. doesn't ring a bell. do you remember any other part of the question?

It was a Strengthen question; the stimulus also included the idea of sufficient/necessary (not sure I can go into much more detail than that). I don't remember anything about the parents' responsibilities to their children, but I had 3 LRs.

This article covers the unlikely possibility of having your scholarship rescinded due to multiple deposits, but what I'm curious about is the possibility of my scholarship increasing if I promise to withdraw from other schools. Is that a thing?

@ Honestly I think a -12 curve would be reasonable.

What does -12 mean? If you get 12 wrong you get a certain score?

Anyone remember the question about potato insects toward the end of one of the LRs? Was this real or not real?

I had experimental LR. LR(25)-RC-LR(26)-LR(26)-LG, think I had this in the second LR... any confirmation? Also in the same section was lake sassafras towards the end as well, if that's correct

I can’t remember Sassafrass but the question right after the potato insects was about switching insurance and saving $100.
