Current 3L @ Georgia Law

Hello 7Sage!

I am a 3L at Georgia Law. I want to offer myself as a resource for anyone interested. Feel free to shoot me a PM! 7Sage was such a resource for me; always looking to give back.

I plan to sit for the July 2023 New Mexico bar. Postgrad, I am interested in Hispanic and Latino civil rights work and advocacy. Specifically, issues affecting the Nuevomexicano community.

1L summer, I worked for a Federal District Court Judge and an Immigration Law Firm. Last fall, I did a D.C. Semester in Practice working for the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division. This past summer, I worked at the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund's (MALDEF) National Public Policy office in D.C.!

I was a 154 LSAT, a 3.5 GPA, a small state school, 4 years of work experience, and URM status. For any other stats, ask!

I look forward to helping anyone I can!

Best,

Jonah

Mentorship Opportunity

Hello 7Sage!

I am a May 2023 University of Georgia School of Law graduate. I am offering myself as a resource for anyone interested. Feel free to shoot me a PM! 7Sage was a resource for me; I always wanted to give back.

I am currently studying for the February 2024 bar exam. I am clerking for the New Mexico Supreme Court and have another clerkship planned for the New Mexico Court of Appeals afterward. I am interested in Hispanic and Latino civil rights work and advocacy—specifically, issues affecting the Nuevomexicano community.

1L summer, I worked for a Federal District Court Judge and an Immigration Law Firm. In Fall 2L, I did a D.C. Semester in Practice working for the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division. During the 2L summer, I worked at the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund's (MALDEF) National Public Policy office in D.C. I did an immigration clinic during my 3L and got my clerkship offers in the spring of 3L.

I had a 154 LSAT, a 3.5 GPA, a small state school, four years of work experience, and URM status. I do not say this bragging, but I proffer that I graduated cum laude to show your stats do not always correlate to a predetermined success in law school. For any other stats, ask!

I look forward to helping anyone I can!

Where Am I Going Wrong? PLEASE HELP!

Hello 7Sage,

I began my LSAT journey in November of 2017. I had just been raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason at my Masonic Lodge, joined the Scottish Rite, and been initiated into Shriner's International. To say these goals were a lifelong dream are an understatement. Riding the high of accomplishing goals that required so much time and effort, I began to ask myself what else I could do now that I had conquered the unconquerable.

Naturally with my Political Science degree in hand and a fire lit from the current state of American Politics, I decided that I wanted to go to law school to be the change I wished to see and make a difference.

I messaged a buddy of mine who is now a 2L at Duke law about what site he used to study and he recommended 7sage (thank goodness). As many others that began their LSAT quest in the midst of the holiday season I found it difficult to stay on task while balancing life and this new found part time job of studying for the beast. Nevertheless, I staggered to the finish line of the CC in April praying that I had learned something from those sleepless nights of watching JY's videos and grinding sets out at work.

In my diagnostic, it was so bad that I questioned if I had even spelled my name correctly. Thus, when my first PT out of the CC was a 151 I was relieved that I was not brain dead and comprehended the basic structure of questions, but also dismayed that I had SO much more work to do. Since then, I have completed 9 other practice tests. Here are my stats:

Average PT score: 150

BR: Consistent 160-166

LR on PT: -12

LG on PT: -10

RC on PT: -10

I have found that my main issues have been medium/ hard LR questions, running out of time in LG, and over analyzing in RC.

My current study schedule is as follows: Saturday or Sunday take a PT, Monday- Friday BR, repeat. I BR a section a day as I am working full time and helping to plan my upcoming wedding.

My goal is T14, thus with my 3.5 GPA from a #231-#300 Ranked University (US News) I know I am going to need a great LSAT score....and a 150 is NOT cutting it.

I have tried to step back and refocus my studying, but nothing has seemed to work. I am turning to the 7sage community now for some #help. If you see anything missing, wrong, or even plain stupid about what I am doing please let me know.

Thank you in advance!

Best,

Jonah

Update from UGA Law Post First Semester

Hello 7Sage Community!

Felt the need to follow up with a post after such an outpour of support at the beginning of the semester. Finished the semester a few weeks ago. Little different exam set ups with COVID being a thing. Thankfully, a friend of mine has a podcast where I had the opportunity to speak on any advice I may have! Link below:

High School Teacher/ Adjunct Professor LOR?

Hi all!

At my smaller state school a lot of the teachers that taught my department's classes were non-tenured adjuncts. Thus, there are only 2 full time faculty I could pull an LOR from. Lucky for me (sarcastic), 1 of those two faculty members and I did not click due to our differences in appreciation for his teaching style.

Thus, I am in a conundrum where I have potential LOR's from my work place (will be out of school for 4 years by the time I start Law School in Fall 2020), but I will only have 1 from my college faculty. Based on the admissions course I realize I will need more academic "beef" to make my application stand out.

What are everyone's thoughts on an AP teacher from high school that I still talk with regularly or an adjunct professor from school? Both would be able to speak to my academic chops as well as the other issues that are discussed in the admissions course. My hesitation is that both may not be considered "academic" enough for admissions officers to take seriously. Looking for some advice on if I should ask one/ both of them for an LOR!

Anything will help! Thanks!

Best,

There are some helpful hints in the admissions portion of your 7Sage package. I would point you to the portion that asks that you put as many academic LOR's as possible. To put in perspective, I have 3 professors and 3 professional as I am 4 years out of undergrad by the time I start law school.

When you go to apply on LSAC it only lets you apply x amount of LOR's anyway. Get those great academic LOR's and make sure those professional ones address your academic capability...not you as a person. They can't put you on the USNWR if you don't have the stats.

Thank You 7Sage (Tears to 154)

7Sage Community,

I came to you all optimistic, wide eyed, and confident that I would ace the LSAT.

That being said, I’m sure as most of you found out quickly, the journey comes with bumps and bruises that showed me how difficult this test really is.

I have worked 40-50 hours every week, got engaged, and got married ALL while studying for the test. I could not have gotten there without the help and support of you all.

I finished my LSAT career on top, 154. To put this in perspective, on my first prep test attempt I didn’t even make it out of the first logic game. I didn’t get more than 5 questions right for LR, and RC left me bewildered at how someone could read so much info so quickly. To go from that place to a 154...I will take it all day everyday.

I’m sure that many will read this and say go for a higher score again, but I am at peace. I studied for a year and a half for this test on my own and with a 7Sage approved tutor (Dave Binghamton, shout out to my dude). There is nothing left to give and that’s okay, some make 170’s...but I made a 154. Damn proud of that sucker too!

I recently finished up writing my Personal Statement and Diversity Statement with the help of the 7Sage Admissions team (Shout out to Selene Steelman). HIGHLY recommend that, if you have the funds, go buy the unlimited edits package. Great deal and even better help!

I start my applications the day they come open, so for many that will be September 1. Not only do I feel confident in my abilities to get into a great law school, but I know I will have a fighting chance thanks to you 7Sage.

Stay humble y’all.

Sincerely & Appreciatively Yours,

Jonah Chadwick Griego

Ugh I seriously can't stand the anxiety of waiting for tomorrow...I am registered for September LSAT just in case this one didn't go well. I don't think I have the heart to do a practice test or study today knowing that there is a small chance I can put this all behind me tomorrow!!

They put instructions on the LSAC website to confirm or deny your score. I keep refreshing to see if they posted, but nothing yet.

Feel like I’m playing the lottery!

If you look at https://classic.7sage.com/admissions/lesson/application-requirements-for-top-schools/, you will see that many schools that specify a length for extra optional essays limit them to 1 page or 500 words. There shouldn't be any confusion between your personal statement and any other writing that you submit.

How long is your personal Statement? Usually 2 page max double spaced.

I wouldn’t make my DS over 1 page for the sake of brevity for the reader.

Good Days and Bad Days

Just a positive statement for all those having a bad day of studying. Even though it seems like you're not getting "it," you will. Rome was not built in 1 day!

To all those having a good day, utilize it and keep pushing forward. Revisit topics you feel week on. You are your biggest weakness if you do not address them!

Now lets all go score some 180s.

Fool Proofing LR Section

Hello 7Sage!

A couple of months back I posted here asking for help regarding improving my study habits. The turn around has been incredible utilizing the tips that this community gave me!

I am finishing up fool proofing logic games in the coming weeks. It has been a struggle working full time and helping to make sure the wedding happens without issue, but I am really hitting my stride with understanding the process it takes to fool proof the test.

I am curious to see how many of you have fool proofed the LR section. Have you used a similar method that you used approaching LG? Any tips?

Any little bit helps! Looking forward to reading the comments!

Best,

Jonah

I saw some schools had the option of applying under the 3+3 program using SAT/ACT scores as an alternative to taking the LSAT, but I believe schools only require an LSAT score if you've taken that. There should be an option to say which scores you are choosing to use for your application. If you've taken the LSAT the schools have to report that number so they will ask for that score.

While there were options for 3+3 like you’re referencing, this wasn’t what I was alluding to.

These scores being asked for in the standardized test taking areas were just asked and required to answer yes or no. For some reason the score itself being plugged in was optional.

I know the page you’re referring to as far as what scores you want to report, but this was different.

What on earth??? Did you have to actually send them through college board or whatever or did you just type it in and they take your word for it?

No sending of scores! Just type them in and they take my word. I would imagine if anything a character thing to not lie. Def wouldn’t help you get approved for the BAR if you lie.

I had no idea that some schools required these! Thanks so much for sharing!!

Only thing that was required to answer was if I had ever taken them. For some reason inputting the score itself was optional. I didn’t want to take chance, thus put them down.

What Be Good 7Sage!

Wanted to give y'all a heads up with how my application cycle went and where I will going...spoiler alert, going to the University of Georgia!

To preface, I want to put some info out regarding my demographics: Hispanic/ Latino (Checked the Mexican Box), Graduated Undergrad in December 2016 so been working a while, married, living in the Florida Panhandle, and am a first gen college student.

With my score being a 154, I understood that I would be below the majority of my choice schools' 25th percentile. Thus, I made it a point to follow the 7Sage admission course guide and have at least 3 safety, 3 target, and 3 reach schools.

I applied to the following schools: Seton Hall (Accepted w/ 10k scholarship offer, withdrew application), Miami (Was on hold, withdrew application), American (Accepted, withdrew application), Florida State (Rejected), Florida (Rejected), Washington and Lee (Was on hold, withdrew application), Cornell (Was on reserve, withdrew application), Emory (Never heard back, withdrew application), Alabama (Waitlisted), Virginia (Rejected), Vanderbilt (Rejected), and UPenn (Rejected).

I went into the application cycle knowing that my wife and I wanted to live in the Atlanta area after graduation, thus UGA made the most sense for us for law school. Knowing that I would have to over shoot my numbers, I made it a point to visit UGA prior to applying. I was able to meet with an assistant director of admissions, dean of the law school, and a first gen law school student coordinator on my visit. I applied regular decision the first day applications opened as I knew I would want to negotiate more scholarship money (if I got any) later in the cycle.

In December, after being told my application was on hold by the committee, I made it a point to send a school specific LOCI explaining why I wanted to go to UGA. I like to think that they liked the letter, as not even a few days after this I was notified of my acceptancemwith a 5k merit scholarship offer.

As I received other acceptances and another merit scholarship offer, I knew my time for negotiation would be coming soon. I received an email a few days ago stating that I would need to let them know if I was going to accept my merit scholarship or not by April 1. Thus, I called the admissions office and notified them I wanted to negotiate. I was able to get my merit scholarship up to $7,500 annually ($22,500 3 years) as well as have all my seat deposit fees waived. I understand that there is a possibility that I can negotiate for more as the cycle goes on, but for the time being this is where I am at.

All in all, I like to think that 7Sage really helped me overshoot my numbers and allowed me to go to the law school of my dreams. I write this in hopes of allowing others to see my thoughts in addition to be able to reach out to someone in the midst of the process. While not all of us can be 170+ LSAT takers, this does not mean that you cannot go to a T30 school! Keep your heads up and do the work.

Feel free to direct message me for any questions you may have. Thank y'all for the amazing journey. Not sure how much I will be on here after this with school starting in August, thus if you do not hear back from me on here in a few days shoot me an email at jonah.griego@gmail.com!

Take Your Time and Learn! (Inspirational Note)

7Sage Community,

I am one of the many that is working full time and studying. I want to give a word of encouragement to those that are balancing a full work load and maintaining your studies. Remember that the study schedule is a guide, not the bible. Please make sure to take breaks and digest what you are taking in. If at all possible try and get some practice in at work, before work, or in transit to work (any little bit helps)....as I understand it can be difficult to stay up late after dinner and a long day of work.

Peace of mind and positivity are what will keep you going. Yes, you are going insane...but it will be worth it!

About to Start PT'ing

7Sage Community,

I have been studying since mid November for the June LSAT. I work full time and I am engaged, thus time has been rare to come by. After grinding it out week in and week out while "maintaining" a somewhat decent sleep schedule...I am about to start PT'ing.

I wanted to share this to give support to those that think they are never going to get there in their studying. I was one of the ones that thought I would slap the diagnostic, but to my utter shock I bombed it. I did not even score my test I was so confused and out of the loop.

Now after taking my time and trying to get concepts down before moving on I am going to take my first PT. The combination of nerves, excitement, and anxiety is really something. I know I am going to do well, but how well? I know this for sure: I have put my best foot forward.

Any of you out there that think your dreams can not come true are just wrong. Apply yourself and believe (sounds like a corny disney movie)!

Thank you for you continued support in this "journey" that is the mini mental breakdowns of LSAT prep.

Looking forward to this next step in the grind!

Fool Proofing LR

Hi all,

Finished fool proofing LG (highly recommend to those that still haven’t done so). Man that helped!

I’ve posted this question before, but got some mixed answers.

I want to make sure that I am going about this the correct way before settling down to grind again.

For fool proofing logical reasoning sections would I go about it in a similar way to the “Pacifico method” that worked so well for me in LG?

Meaning print off some more recent, but not too recent logical reasoning sections and do one section timed, then review/ BR same day after a break, repeat the section timed the next day and review again, and then review the following week?

Interested to see if others had a better way of increasing their score! Any tips help.

Thank you!
