Thanks for the response Accounts Playable. So by my understanding, those features (Best Vball players) are in fact RELEVANT to the quality of the team (being the best), however it does not GUARANTEE that they will be the best team? Is that why it is factually inaccurate?

Relevance =/ Definitely

If that's the case, how can you tell if something is "relevant" or not?

Just to touch up on what JY said below, there is a subtle conditional we have to watch out for.

AC D says: All employees of GA can participate in its retirement plan after they have been with the company for a year or more.

Stop reading before the word "after". The conditional logic would be"

employee of GA → Can participate in its retirement plan.

or in simple English: If you're an employee of GA, you can participate in the retirement plan.

Now, continue reading from "after". Now it says, well, after they have been with the company for a year or more. So does that mean all employees of GA can participate in the retirement plan? NO! It means, actually, if you have been with the company for a year or more. Therefore the new conditional is:

Employee of GA with 1+ year → Can participate in its retirement plan.

In simple English: Actually, if you're an employee of GA with 1+ year of work, then you can participate in the retirement plan.

So in conclusion, this is what it sounds like in English:

If you're an employee of GA, then you can participate in its retirement plan. But actually, it's IF you've worked for 1+ year, so if you're an employee with 1+ year, then you can participate in the retirement plan.

I'm having troubles understanding why B is wrong.

I thought that the features (Best volleyball players) are irrelevant to the quality of the team (being the best team). Doesn't this explain the part =/ whole flaw? That, just because the entity has the best volleyball players does not mean that it is the best team, hence features are in fact irrelevant to being the best team?

Guys, I know what we are disputing! It's hard for me to convey my thoughts (sorry!), but what I'm saying is that I used my unconventional way of thinking to help me understand what to look for in the answer choices.

ECHpoon, you're reasoning behind why B is wrong is exactly the same way I thought about it too. Perhaps it's just the way I explained it that's causing the confusion....

Hey Matt,

My reasoning behind mentioning "maybe the play could have been written in 1444, or any year after 1431" is to simply recognize the flaw in the argument claiming that the play was written between 1431 and 1471. What I meant was that the play doesn't HAVE to be between 1431 and 1471 just because the Rose Noble was first circulated in 1431, but rather the play could have been written between 1444 and 1471, or any year after 1431 up to 1471. That was the focal point I wanted to zero in on before going in to the answer choices.

What you mentioned: "The argument is that the play must have been written BETWEEN 1431 and 1471, not before, not after. Why? Because rose noble, a coin mentioned in the play, was first circulated in 1431." is just a reiteration of the parts in the stimulus and not digging to the core in actually explaining why. That's why I wanted to think of a simple way on WHY the rose noble being circulated in 1431 does not actually result in the play being written between 1431 and 1471.

Answer choice B has the same flaw as the one in the stimulus, that's why it's the wrong answer choice. Just because a new coin was minted in 1422, and was mentioned in the play, does not undermine the claim that the play has to be between 1431 and 1471. It could've been written anytime after 1422 and hence, very well have been written between 1431 and 1471. I suppose Answer Choice B is to lure the test taker to believe that the play was written between 1422 and 1471 because of this new coin, much like how the stimulus mentioned that the play was written between 1431 and 1471, due to the rose noble being circulated in 1431.

I fell for trap answer B. After pondering upon why this was a wrong answer choice, I finally got it... The premise indicates that the play cannot have been written before 1431 because of the rose noble being first circulated in 1431. That's a terrible argument because if it was circulated in 1431, maybe the play could have been written in 1444, or any year after 1431 for that matter.

Answer choice B is basically the same reasoning behind the premise about the rose noble. If another coin was minted in 1422, who says the play can't be after 1422?

In this example, "without" (group 4) isn't being used because "cannot" (group 3) is being used as our primary indicator instead. When there is both a group 4 and group 3 indicator in a sentence, it's totally your choice on which one you want to use. We could have definitely used "without" as our main indicator, instead of "cannot". However, just make sure that you don't neglect the indicator that didn't get chosen, by making sure you treat it as a negative.

For example: One cannot maintain good soil without good farming.

Choosing Cannot as our main indicator:

Step 1: identify the two things. GS and GFm

Step 2: Choose your main indicator: Cannot. Now that we chose Cannot as our main indicator, make sure you apply a negative to whatever is attached to Without. So now we have GS and /GFm.

Step 3: Cannot is a Group 4, negate necessary, so choose one of the two to be your necessary condition and negate it.

You'll either get /Gfm →/GS

or

GS →Gfm. And look! you have contrapositives of each other.

Choosing Without as our main indicator:

Step 1: Identify the two things. GS and GFm

Step 2. Choose your main indicator: Without. Now that we chose Without as our main indicator, make sure you apply a negative to whatever is attached to cannot, therefore /GS. Now we have /GS and GFm.

Step 3: Without is a Group 3, negate sufficient, so choose one of the two to be your sufficient condition and negate it.

You'll either get /Gfm →/GS

or

GS → Gfm, which is the exact same if we had chosen Cannot as our main indicator!

And to answer your second question, yes, we were told not to conflate the items. But we followed the road anyways... Why? Because we followed the road for a different reason. Not because we conflated the items, but due to generalizing what /BS and GS both go under. Both bad soil and good soil are a result of natural conditions, which means GF and /BF must also result from natural conditions since they are dependent on the condition of the soil.

Hope that makes sense.

Could someone please elaborate on why B is wrong? Isn't the argument trying to deny the claim and give an alternative reason why?

Thank you

Just got my score for the Dec LSAT and my score improved by 14 points. Of course the huge jump was in part due to my own mistakes but I just wanted to say THANK YOU to 7sage and thank you to everyone else for creating such an awesome community.

Of course :( I think that's completely normal. I think when you feel like that, you need to take a bit of time off and focus on relaxing. Of course studying is important, but you won't make any progress if you're so stressed out. Take a deep breath, read a good book, watch a good movie, then dive into those passages again :)
