I'm confused that the poles are effected by ice ages

I didn't know when the printing press came out, nor did I know in the 1600s actors did not commonly get a script. I feel like background knowledge is almost required for this. If it said earlier I may have thought differently but I think this question is not great because it requires knowledge of when scripts weren't commonly used.
