I want to be able to enter a discount code before I purchase an upgrade for a course, but there is no field to do so. I don't want to hit 'Purchase' until I see my discount applied. Any suggestions?

I was thinking the exact same thing. It still seems to me that there is too much ambiguity remaining. It should say either 'between' as you suggest, or even something more specific like 'a child conceived by both parties together' or something to that effect.
