Would you be able to expand on "bad"? Lol. Do you know the difference between these two types of assumptions?

I'm interested to see what others will say about this, because it's something I haven't mastered either!

Recently, I watched the timed commentary that JY does on a top-scorer's LR section. (It should be included in the basic subscription, since that's what I have.) Watching it was honestly crazy, because you watch her get through all 26 questions in roughly 18 minutes. The key thing here is, she skips a ton of the questions. JY does a great job of explaining her tactics and how she's moving through them, so I'd definitely recommend watching it if you haven't already.

What I personally took from that was inspiration to take each question at face value, read effectively through the stimulus, and if possible, eliminate 3 of the answer choices off the bat. Once she was down to two, and still couldn't determine the right answer, (in like 8 seconds) she circled it and moved on. Just by doing this, she got through all the questions with another 17 minutes to go through again and again (like... whAT).

Another interesting thing I noticed was how little she wrote on her paper, parsed out, and annotated. As someone who's always writing everything I think could help when answering the question, this looked crazy. But I tried it out on the next LR timed section I did, just marking what was totally necessary (P/C/key indicator words for logic) and felt a lot calmer, which I think added to the time I had in the bank, since as I get more stressed and anxious, the worse I am at managing my time. This is anecdotal, but that section I did -4, when my average is -7/8.

All of this is obviously dependent on how comfortable you feel with your skills in LR and the core curriculum, and how accurately you can answer questions untimed. Likely, you wont improve overall until you've got a good foundational knowledge of answering question types. But I would say check it out and try to channel her calm and deliberate approach when you try your next one! Best of luck!

As far as Columbia goes, I believe they specifically asked for you to explain “why Columbia” in the personal statement. Not sure if that’s helpful or not, but that’s what I did for my application to them.

Please, do every person in the test center a favor, and leave your phone in your car!!!!! LSAC puts it on everything they send us for a reason. On my test day, 3 people brought phones into the center and made all of us almost 40 minutes late because proctors had them go back to their cars and put them back. It was honestly really annoying and shitty, and threw a lot of people off of their game.

You can only bring in the ziploc bag that they specify in their instructions for Test Day and a drink. Put your purse in your car, and put your car key in your ziploc.

@ perfect, videos!! that'll be helpful to get a good grip on all of this. thank you for such a great list, I will definitely need to devote a few days to get through the legal theory, but I'm very excited to have a direction to head in.

Thanks so much!

@ Thank you, thank you, thank you! I think you have a great point- I was lost and just jumped into novels, but theory and related jargon seems to be what I struggle getting through the most. I appreciate so much your help and this fantastic list of people to start with!

I think I'll ask for help with access to some of those materials from my friends still in school, but those websites look valuable too. And maybe an art history textbook if I can get my hands on one!

@ I love this list! NPR is my favorite, I've seen a few episodes of The Good Place (but never understood the depth of theory in it), docs on Netflix and HBO are a favorite pastime too! I really like your idea about going through an art museum, and I think I'll start listening to Undisclosed (I loved Serial!)

Thanks so much! Nontraditional is what I'd like to focus on now, I've spent so many months going through the strict study schedules and drilling question types. Even though I've made a lot of progress, I think doing a more holistic type of studying could benefit me a lot, and maybe even teach me about things outside of the LSAT! (lol what a concept.)

Reading Comp suggestions for art/law/humanities

Hi friends! I'm looking for advice/suggestions from those of you with backgrounds in liberal arts, law, humanities, art, and social sciences.

My background is in science/tech, which makes the science passages in RC a relief, but has left me struggling with the passages focused on specific artists, art history, social science etc.

I see people posting about reading The Economist and other tech/science journals to increase their understanding and stamina with those subjects, but haven't seen a consensus on reading material for the humanities. I've been reading the New Yorker and more prose-heavy books, but am lost otherwise. What are your suggestions? Thanks!

@ I felt the same way! Overall, I feel pretty good about the LR sections and was happy that the first one was the experimental. LG was the only thing that gave me any grief- the second and last games got me for sure! I definitely guessed on a few too. Hopefully we guessed right.

Hey, so this is some advice that's pretty frequently mentioned on this site, but by increasing the amount and caliber of materials you're actually reading every day, RC starts to become a little more manageable. This may not be great advice for only a week or so to go, but in the months before I took the test, I cut out social media and tried to avoid other mediums that run on small tidbits to convey most messages. This turned into me reading more newspapers, actual books, and verbose materials like The New Yorker & The Economist. I can't tell you how that impacted my score yet (if it did at all) but it definitely made the act of accomplishing RC during test day much easier than in previous PTs I'd done.

For those who had 3 LR sections, any idea which was experimental? for me it was LR RC LR LR LG. hoping the first LR was experimental because the 2nd and 3rd seemed more manageable.

Also, can we make it a rule that if you can't even read LSAC's rules and the admission ticket well enough to see the several "do not bring your phone" clauses mentioned, you probably shouldn't be allowed to be a lawyer at all? Lol, I'm salty that the (like 4) people who brought them to my test center were allowed to go back to their cars to put them back, and made us all start 30 mins later than scheduled.

After noting that the question is a weakening question, I tend to read the prompt as if it were coming from I source that I don’t trust, and after finishing it I write in the margin what my initial objection is. Then I look for that objection in an AC.

Also, I find that the 19 common argument flaws are a good review for these questions.

Sadly I have no words of wisdom to offer, but just wanted to commiserate with you. The same happens to me- individual sections I'm around -4, and in PTs I average -7.I have no doubt the mental fatigue contributes. Hoping for that adrenaline on test day too!
