RC - reading from screen impacts performance

Hello fellow sages,

I've been reviewing RC and had a bunch of sections printed off. I was doing close to perfect.

I switched to doing sections on lawhub and, oh man, it's really hurting my score.

I tried several approaches and nothing seems to be helping. I just process and retain text on a screen differently than I do on paper.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks!

@ wishing there was a (3 instead of a like button. Well said!

I believe we only have 3 tries per cycle, 5 tries per 5 year period, 7 tries lifetime max. I would agree to max out if you know you haven't hit close to your potential, but over 5 years of the LSAT might drive a person mad! lol(/p)

I agree, but I think you can squeeze out 5 tries over two years. Also, on lsac's page it says the past few FLRX exams didnt count towards your limit:

Please note: With the introduction of the LSAT-Flex to provide a safe and effective mechanism for candidates to earn scores during the COVID-19 emergency, LSAC made the decision that the May, June, July, and August 2020 LSAT-Flex tests do not count toward these limits. Tests beginning with the October 2020 administration will count toward LSAT testing limits.

PT45.S4.Q22 - Classic jazz recordings

Q22 is sufficient assumption. It says:

The ONLY recordings that go to CD are those that companies believe will sell well enough to be profitable

It concludes: Most classic jazz records will not be put on CD b/c few classic jazz recordings are played on radio

  • Believe will sell well enough to be profitable -----> transferred to CD
  • [contra: transfer to CD ---> believe will sell well enough ]

  • jazz ----m----> on radio ----> put on CD
  • so far so good? I'm having trouble translating answer choice E

No recording that is not played on radio is one that record companies believe would be profitable

recording played on radio -----> believe it would be profitable on CD

    So it becomes:

Jazz ---m---> on radio ---> on CD ----> believe it will sell well enough to be profitable

    Is that correct?

PT45.S4.Q16 - Most people in modern society

    Hi there, #help please

    How would you contra-pose MOST?:

    X --most-- Y

    would it be:

    Y --most-- X

    OR

    Y←some→X

    As an example: PT45.S4.Q16

  • Not happy unless needed by others
  • Most people can achieve indispensability ONLY within family.
  • H ----> NO
  • NO ---most---> F
  • contra-positive of 2:

  • F ---most--->NO
  • OR

  • F←some→NO
  • Both would give us answer choice (E), Less than most people can find happiness outside of personal relationships

    Thanks!

anyone else think Powerscore LG is awful?

After finishing the LSAT Trainer I hopped on PowerScore LG.

Im finding it excessively wordy and convoluting. Its confusing me more instead of helping.

Anyone else agree with this? Im even thinking of dropping it because it feels like a waste of time

I took the exam tuesday and had LG-RC-LR-LG. I cannot figure out which LG was experimental. Can anyone with one LG give some insight? One game that sticks out had music duets with violinists and pianists I think, and it was difficult for me. I remember my RC having passages about a spanish novel being ironic and another was about a bill restricting women's labor laws. I can't remember an LR example off the top of my head, but so far I haven't seen any familiar questions on this forum. I'd probably remember if I had seen something or not.

I only had 1 LG section and it included the duet/musicians game.

Dear lord that was a hard ass game

So a lot of people seem to get through their questions quickly and then go back to check/confirm/unflag numerous answers later.

my question is: why not make sure you got them right the first time before moving on? (without getting too fixated on any particulsr question)

I imagine if you have time to go back and check more than 3 flagged or skipped answers in total, you're moving too fast, skimming answer choices etc.

for arguments sake, I finish sections on time and go -2 (good day/section) to -4 (bad day/ section)

When will I be able to see my score via early score preview?

Unfortunately, from what I understand the score preview does not allow you to see the score earlier than anyone else. It just gives you the option of cancelling the score, if you want to.

Here is a direct quote from the LSAC website:

"First-time test takers who sign up for score preview will receive their scores at the same time other test takers receive theirs (assuming they have completed their LSAT Writing and have no holds on their accounts), and will have six (6) calendar days to decide if they want to cancel or keep their score."

Wrong info. You do see your score.

Dates are on the website, google is your friend.

@ Same boat. I’ve studied for over a year working only part time. But I changed my studying and quit my job for the last four months which is when I saw my biggest score improvement! That’s why I’m defeated because I put my all into it and it still didn't work out. Good for you for having the means to keep going!! I'm just having doubts that it just may not be in the cards for me

You’re not defeated, you’re merely on the verge of surrender. You have to understand that some of us have to make greater sacrifices to get to where we want in life. It's very normal to feel what you feel. I think it’s worthwhile taking a little time to decompress. It would help to reflect, even on here if you would like.

None of this may apply to you. You might be completely happy doing something else in life. If that's the case, then that's completely fine. Hang up your hat and never turn back. There is no need to torture yourself over this. But posting on here tells me you want to keep going, all you need is a little push. If you want a little push, then here it is.

To get out of this slump, you have to honestly ask yourself: Why do you want to study law? What does it mean to you? What will it get you?

I think revisiting these questions will help clarify your situation. The answers will remind you why you are doing what you do and make you stay focused. They remind you why you started and where you need to go in the face of both victory and loss. You don't get too high and distracted, and you don't get too low and give up. A realistic assessment is what keeps you away both from being overconfident and discouraged.

For me, law school is a means to a profession (career), being around like minded, intelligent and ambitious people, getting a good salary, improving my critical thinking, gaining an experience, and having knowledge of the law. I don't have these things and I want them. This is what matters to ME. What matters to YOU?

If you notice, I don't have some idealistic goals, they're grounded and very specific to me. I keep authentic to what matters to me and only me. I am not doing this to impress others, I am doing this so I can be better off in life and feel better about myself. Don’t bullshit yourself, it won’t motivate you; self-interest will. Figure out your pain points (poverty, status, ego, etc.) and link them to the goal (high LSAT score).

After you go through that bit, remind yourself that absolutely everyone has doubt - what elite performers do differently is that they don't let it deter them. They don't let mistakes and failures discourage them, instead they use them as learning experiences to better themselves.

You have to see this loss as an opportunity to improve, to refine, to persevere. It is an opportunity to strengthen your character, bolster your resolve, and grow as a person. The process to victory can be painful and gruesome, but suffering is what you have to go through to get where you need to.

There's no secret or magic formula, it's just consistent practice and hard work. You have to keep working on breaking down questions, analyzing mistakes, seeing what strategies work through experimentation. Have you gone through all the PTs? Have you redone all the questions you got wrong? Can you do every game flawlessly? Have you analyzed your blind spots? This process is how you improve, we're not all born brilliantly smart. This shit takes grit.

There is a great little poem from the movie Catch Me If You Can that captures this ethos:

Two little mice fell into a bucket of cream. The first mouse quickly gave up and drowned, but the second mouse, he struggled so hard that he eventually churned that cream into butter and he walked out.

Would you be having doubts about law if you had done well? Would you be having doubts if you had been in a different mind-state? I don't think so.

Your current thinking is primed by your recent experience. It's not an objective assessment. By giving up here, this will be your final experience of the LSAT, all the while you have a few more attempts to get it right. You will reinforce a quitter’s, loser’s mindset, which spill over into the rest of your life. You should not permit doubt to take the wind out of your momentum. What you have to do is interject in your thought process. Change how you think.

Quite frankly my biggest regrets in life were quitting prematurely because I let doubt and insecurity creep up on me instead of doubling down on my efforts. It’s not a good way to live. You never regret risking too much when you give it your all, but you always regret not trying or not giving enough – so don’t sell yourself short, and don't give up.

On a closing note, you reminded me of an anecdote I read a long time ago from Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich. It is called Three Feet From Gold. I went ahead and dug it out for you. I want you to read it.

One of the most common causes of failure is the habit of quitting when one is overtaken by temporary defeat. Every person is guilty of this mistake at one time or another.

An uncle of R. U. Darby was caught by the gold fever in the gold-rush days, and went west to DIG AND GROW RICH. He had never heard that more gold has been mined from the brains of men than has ever been taken from the earth. He staked a claim and went to work with pick and shovel. The going was hard, but his lust for gold was definite.

After weeks of labor, he was rewarded by the discovery of the shining ore. He needed machinery to bring the ore to the surface. Quietly, he covered up the mine, retraced his footsteps to his home in Williamsburg, Maryland, told his relatives and a few neighbors of the “strike.” They got together money for the needed machinery, had it shipped. The uncle and Darby went back to work the mine.

The first car of ore was mined, and shipped to a smelter. The returns proved they had one of the richest mines in Colorado! A few more cars of that ore would clear the debts. Then would come the big killing in profits.

Down went the drills! Up went the hopes of Darby and Uncle! Then something happened! The vein of gold ore disappeared! They had come to the end of the rainbow, and the pot of gold was no longer there! They drilled on, desperately trying to pick up the vein again— all to no avail.

    Finally, they decided to QUIT.

They sold the machinery to a junk man for a few hundred dollars, and took the train back home. Some “junk” men are dumb, but not this one! He called in a mining engineer to look at the mine and do a little calculating. The engineer advised that the project had failed, because the owners were not familiar with “fault lines.” His calculations showed that the vein would be found just three feet from where the Darbys had stopped drilling! That is exactly where it was found!

The “Junk” man took millions of dollars in ore from the mine, because he knew enough to seek expert counsel before giving up.

Most of the money which went into the machinery was procured through the efforts of R. U. Darby, who was then a very young man. The money came from his relatives and neighbors, because of their faith in him. He paid back every dollar of it, although he was years in doing so.

Long afterward, Mr. Darby recouped his loss many times over, when he made the discovery that desire can be transmuted into gold. The discovery came after he went into the business of selling life insurance.

Remembering that he lost a huge fortune, because he stopped three feet from gold, Darby profited by the experience in his chosen work, by the simple method of saying to himself, “I stopped three feet from gold, but I will never stop because men say ‘no’ when I ask them to buy insurance.”

Darby is one of a small group of fewer than fifty men who sell more than a million dollars in life insurance annually. He owes his stickability to the lesson he learned from his quitability in the gold mining business.

Before success comes in any man’s life, he is sure to meet with much temporary defeat, and, perhaps, some failure. When defeat overtakes a man, the easiest and most logical thing to do is to quit. That is exactly what the majority of men do.

More than five hundred of the most successful men this country has ever known told the author their greatest success came just one step beyond the point at which defeat had overtaken them.

Failure is a trickster with a keen sense of irony and cunning. It takes great delight in tripping one when success is almost within reach.

Don't give up when you're three feet from gold. Keep fucking going.

I hope this inspires you and you find the strength to keep going. Use this valuable experience as a source of inspiration to keep going. Whatever the outcome, the time you spend grinding towards a goal is never wasted.

I had to cancel my first two scores, because I FELT they were poor. I score high 160s on PTs. Exams I can't sleep before them and that first 10-15 minutes I can't get in the zone. I am wondering if I even got 160 today. Welcome to the club.

It's a numbers game. Eventually you'll get a good exam with questions you handle well. And if you don't? Then you can't blame your failure for a lack of effort. I would much rather live with failure than doubt for the rest of my life, wondering, "what if?"

    Don't give up.

You got accoms, you got Oct/Nov exams back to back. You have 7 tries. I know it costs money, but how bad do you want it?

Stop bitching and get back to work.

I had the exact same version of the exam, and I have to agree with your assessments. The first LR was a bit wonkey and didn't feel as concrete as the second. Definitely comparable in difficulty to some of the mid-80s tests IMO.

do you think LR1 was the experimental one? I suspect because there seemed to be a great variance between the questions in some way that I can't put my finger on it. Or it was the nerves from it being the first section?

@ how was your experience with today’s lsat?

    LR-LG-LR-RC

LR1 - seemed tougher than usual, maybe bc it took a bit to get in the zone; wealth tax, conspiracy theory cameras, finnish watches

LG - okish; film exec, fencing game had me puzzled, it seemed to have too many open slots?? kind of guesstimated here, and found myself not using my splits for game 3, which killed a lot of time

LR2 easier, lots of assumption questions; medical v psych, music loudness, name on plaque

RC - texts were tough as hell, but manageable; nigerian lang, prosecutorial, aperture, universe from nothing

Overall, seemed tougher than most 80s in my opinion

I have a bunch of Kaplan PTs downloaded from the internet. Are they different from the official published LSAT PTs?

How many official ones are there? Where can you find all of the official ones? And are there other organizations that publish more/other/different PTs?

I'm at a cross-roads deciding whether I should sing up for the August flex (deadline is today).

Reason being, it's 3 sections, so it's going to be shorter, and it will be at the convenience of my home. There is also score preview.

The drawback is I only have 45 days to study - my work contract just ended so I can spend all day every day.

On the flipside, there is more time to study for the October exam. It may also be FLEX depending on how COVID progresses. Does the score-preview apply for all exams from now on?

Have you noticed that you score better on sections and PTs at a particular time?

I seem to score better in the evenings, though I have on signed up for my LSATs in the mornings (9:30)

In the mornings, I'm groggy - but when I feel good, I do well because I have more energy.

In the evenings I seem to be more focused and 'in flow' - but I am afraid of being tired by the time my test rolls around.

When I was filing, the drop down had a ProctorU option amongst others. Go to LSAC JD login, then go down to previous lsats. Under November 2021, there's a complaint link.

If you have reasons to believe it affected you unfairly, then it seems appropriate to file. It's at their discretion at the end of the day and there are no guarantees.

There's an official complaint form. Fill it out and then call them.

LSAC contact staff is amazing so I can only send them love, but at the end of the day this is a separate issue and we pay a lot of money for this. It's only right we have a fair testing experience.

    Is LG -3/-4 considered good?

Mostly its stupid mistakes, sometimes they're tough questions I wouldn't have time to tackle properly or do not know how to approach well (like rule substitution).

I'm writing this month. I've been studying for 6 months, focused on LR mostly and tackled LG about 2 months ago. I haven't been able to get -0 or -1 consistently, I'm lucky if I get away with -2, but I'm usually at -3 or -4. - and never any extra time to spare... I have no idea how people work that fast.

I'm beginning to doubt myself. Is this considered good? or am I doing average?
