Omg this question comes down to the sentence "the first date is more than 500 years earlier than the second"
First date : "insect fragments found in samples of sediments to determine when warmth adapted open ground beetles replaced cold adapted arctic beetles."
Second date : "testing pollen grains in those same samples to determine when ice masses yielded to spruce forests."
Correct answer: Toward the end of the ice age warmth adapted open ground beetles colonized the new terrain opened to them faster( this happened 500 years earlier than the latter date, which means it happened sooner which is why this answer is right ) than soil changes and seed dispersion established new spruce forests.
I picked B because : "It generalizes from atypical occurrences"- The atypical occurrences are the FEW articles submitted by Cotrell that are SUPERIOR , out of the NUMEROUS articles that Cotrell submitted.
So it generalized that he's incapable of writing an article that is better than average, off of these atypical occurrences.
But is it wrong because this is not a generalization overall , but a specific case regarding to this person?
Thank You as I am still confused about this. #feedback
I should have skipped this passage. Knowing which battles to fight is also important in this exam.
I don't think the reasoning for why C is wrong is good enough, because the question was asking about the author's discussion of Hackley as a whole. The roots being the turn of the century is just one premise I guess discussing the overall context of who Hackley is and what her introduction brought to the overall discussion of her part in the passage. I personally got a different reading from that. Her being in the passage wasn't just to illustrate how long it had been , it seems like C made more sense because so many people had been influenced by her.
