Well for A I would say the problem is at "devoting effort". Just not destroying books is not really an "effort". Or generally, A implies "creating something that's not yet available", while D says "not destroying somethings that already exists", which is closer to the paragraph.

Plus, even if the reason why Mr. Fat Cat licked his paws was that he was eating something before, there's no proof that he ate the salmon. Although from common sense, cats love fish, it's not always that way. Also, we should not use common sense or outside knowledge as part of the premise.
