I noticed that some games are very easy to diagram. However, I am always unsure on how many sketches I should make. In order to save time, is there a general method for knowing when to draw multiple diagrams vs. using only one?
I believe you are talking about "splitting the boards." There is no definite rule you can follow, but generally speaking if there is a very restrictive rule (usually not stated explicitly, most are derived from inference) that severely restricts the number of possibilities, you should split the board. I personally feel that it boils down to your experience. As you do a lot more games, you will start to gain a "sixth sense" of how the game is designed.
