I was stuck between B and C and finally chose C because I thought "suggest that a particular approach be taken by the proponents of the assertion" from B didn't match the passage.
But the answer is B and I can't still find why C is wrong. It seems every words from C are match for the passage.
Why is C wrong and can B is an answer?
And which part of the passage is compatible with "suggest that a particular approach be taken by the proponents of the assertion" from B?

The author never suggested the proponents abandon their view in favor of hers. That's why C is incorrect. There's s difference between critiquing a view and completely advocating for its abandonment.

"An empirical approach not unlike that of anthropologists is needed if communications specialists are to understand the impact of external cultural influences on the lives of people in a society."

This is where the author suggests that a particular approach be taken, and then she describes two questions that must be answered.
