  I hear its not mandatory, but pretty much expected/encouraged to do. It will only help you, esp if done right.

  I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who aren't writing one. And some are right not to do so if there is nothing diverse about them, while others are wrong not to write one either because they have gotten bad advice, don't understand how they bring a diverse perspective to the table, or perhaps they are just lazy. If you have a legitimate reason to write one, and there are many, then take the opportunity to showcase a bit more of your writing as well as a bit more of yourself.
