Support A newly developed light bulb is much more cost-effective than conventional light bulbs: it costs only about 3 times what a conventional light bulb costs but it lasts up to 10 times as long as a conventional light bulb. ███████ ███ ██████████████ ███████ ███████ ██ █████████ ███ ██████████ ██ ███ ███ █████ ███ ███████ ████████ ████ █████ ███ █████ ████ █████ ██ ████ ████ ███████

Argument Summary: (Surprising) Prediction

We're told that a new light bulb has a real cost advantage over conventional light bulbs: it costs 3 times as much but lasts 10 times as long. The manufacturer is also working hard to publicize the advantages of this bulb. In spite of these two facts, the analyst predicts the bulbs will sell very poorly.

Strengthen

Since nothing in the stimulus explains why the analyst predicts the bulbs will sell poorly, we have to assume there's some other reason, not mentioned in the stimulus, for the analyst's prediction. Maybe the bulbs are significantly dimmer than conventional light bulbs, or only come in an uncommon size. Or maybe conventional light bulbs last long enough already that people aren't interested in buying bulbs that last 10 times longer.

We're expecting four answer choices to strengthen the analyst's prediction by providing this kind of support, and we're looking for one answer choice that doesn't provide support.

The light generated ██ ███ ███ ████ ██ ██ ███ ██████ █████ ██ ███ █████████ █ ████ ██ ██████████ █████ ████ ██████ ████ ████████████

This isn't what we're looking for. (A) provides a concrete reason people wouldn't want to buy the new bulb in spite of its advantages. So (A) strengthens the analyst's prediction.

Most people who ████████ █████ █████ ██████ ██ ███ ███████████ █████ █████ ██████ ████ ████ ███████ ███ █████████ █████ ██████

This isn't the answer choice we want. (B) also supports the analyst's prediction that the new bulbs will not sell well, because most people are more concerned with price than with durability.

A manufacturer of ███ █████ ██ ████████████ █████ ████ ███ ██████████ ██████ ████ ███ ███ █████ ████ ████ ████ ███████████ ████ ██ ████████████ █████ ██████

This isn't the answer choice we want. (C) tells us that a rival manufacturer is launching an ad campaign to discourage people from buying the new light bulbs. This provides support for the analyst's prediction that the new bulbs won't sell well

The new bulb ██ ██ ██ ████████ ██ ███████ █████████ ███████████ ███████ ████ ████████ ██████████ ███ ████ ██ ████████ ██████████ ████ ██████

Correct. This answer choice provides no support for the analyst's prediction that the bulbs will sell very poorly. We don't know how the packaging of the bulbs will affect sales.

A competing manufacturer ██ █████ ██ █████████ █ █████ ████ ████ █████ ██ █████ ██ ████ ██ █ ████████████ ████ ███ █████ ████ ████ █ ████████████ █████

This isn't what we're looking for. (E) provides support for the analyst's prediction. The bulbs will likely sell poorly because a competitor is producing a bulb that lasts just as long but is significantly cheaper.
